Children’s Descriptions of Participation Processes in Interventions for Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence

In recent years, interventions have been developed to meet the needs of children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). This study explores and analyses processes of participation during counselling as described by 29 children who had received community-based intervention for children exposed to IPV. The results of the analysis show how participation processes in the different phases of the intervention are related to three prerequisites for children actually receiving the intervention offered, namely (1) the child getting in contact with the unit, (2) the child starting the intervention process, and, because the intervention is directed at their experiences of IPV, and (3) the child actually talking about the violence. The implications of these results are used to discuss children’s willingness and reluctance to talk about IPV during interventions in which talking about their experiences is thought to be of therapeutic value.     

Care managers’ perceptions of eHomecare: a qualitative interview study

To implement information and communication technology (ICT) in elderly care can be a challenge for healthcare organisations. In Sweden, care managers (CMs) are responsible for offering ICT as a new part of homecare, i.e. eHomecare. The aim of this study was to focus on CMs’ perspectives and describe their perceptions of eHomecare. The study has a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews based on vignettes were conducted with 12 CMs in a medium-sized municipality in central Sweden. Data were analysed using qualitative analysis. The findings showed that CMs are influenced by surrounding organisations and relatives in their decision to grant eHomecare. There were also difficulties in CMs’ management of eHomecare. Furthermore, eHomecare was perceived to improve the quality of everyday life for older. It is understood that the management of eHomecare is a challenging task for CMs and a complex mission. Interactions among CMs, relatives, care providers, and other factors as for example CMs’ own attitudes have an impact on CMs’ decisions.

Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence Describe Their Experiences: A Typology-Based Qualitative Analysis

Although much is known about the impact of intimate partner violence on children, few empirical studies have linked children’s experiences to typologies. This qualitative study, based on interviews with children 8–12 years of age living at women’s shelters in Sweden, explores how children describe the nature of the violence they have been exposed to with the aim of identifying patterns in the children’s experiences. The typologies developed by Johnson and colleagues and by Holtzworth-Munroe and colleagues are used as an analytical framework for analysis. Three main types of children’s experiences of intimate partner violence were identified: “Obedience-Demanding Violence,” “Chronic and Mean Violence,” and “Parenthood-Embedded Violence.” These the types can improve our understanding of the complex variety of children’s experiences of parental IPV by acknowledging how from children’s perspectives, experiences of IPV are closely connected to the perpetrator being their parent. The study provides examples of three different strategies that have implications for the factors that social workers may want to address when making judgments about custody, place of residence, and contact.     

The feminine style,the male influence,and the paradox of gendered political blogspace

This article explores gender differences in political communication among blogging politicians. The article sets out to explore two baseline questions: (1) Are distinct gendered ‘blogstyles’ to be found among political representatives? and (2) How do gender and gendered blogstyles interplay and affect the impact of political blogs? The empirical study draws on a survey targeting blogging politicians in Sweden (N?=?523). The analysis identifies substantial differences in how female and male politicians communicate in the blogosphere as well as the outcomes in terms of feedback and impact. Female politicians, to a greater degree than their male counterparts, utilize blogging for the purpose of fostering a stronger connection with their readers as well as to enquire about ideas and policy perspectives. This strategy seems to be successful for fostering qualitative feedback from readers; yet, female bloggers have far less impact than their male colleges. We discuss two potential understandings of these results: relating to gender stereotypes and the network power structure of the blogosphere.
