‘Who was the best?’: Power,knowledge and rationality in bilingual girls’ code choices1

This paper examines how pre‐adolescent bilingual girls employ linguistic choices to construct relations of dominance and subordination in a competitive exchange of knowledge and expertise in a pretend‐school activity. Quantitative and qualitative analyses demonstrate that code choices used by the girls to constitute and exploit different sources of power are systematically related to the construction of currently salient identities, prevailing structural constraints, and individual goals and desires. It is argued that even young children act as rational, social actors who actively make strategic and meaningful linguistic choices with the overall aim to achieve optimal outcomes in a given interaction.

Fourth order rotatability

Fourth order rotatable designs are discussed. A general k, design moment inequality is given. The variance function for two-factor designs is derived, and plotted for a specific design. A minimum point set requirement for two-factor designs is established, thus enabling one to form an infinity of such designs. Some difficulties in obtaining deLigns for k>2 are described. Some questions are posed for future work.     

D-optimal Designs for a Combined Simple Linear and Haar-Wavelet Regression Model

A combined simple linear and Haar-wavelet regression model is the combination of a simple linear model and a Haar-wavelet regression model. In this article we show how to construct D-optimal designs for a combined simple linear and Haar-wavelet regression model. An example is also given.     

An investigation of first-order and second-order designs for extrapolation outside a hypersphere

Methods for selecting a first-order or second-order rotatable response surface design when both variance and bias error exist are applied to a situation in which it is desired to extrapolate the fitted model in all directions outside of a sphere within which all the experiments are to be made. The extrapolation region is a spherical shell.     

Safety First: A Model of Care for Working Systemically With High Risk Young People and Their Families in an Acute CAMHS Service

The following article outlines the Safety First Model for working with high‐risk young people in crisis. This hierarchical model prioritises emotional and physical safety by using multi‐systemic and family‐based interventions. A typical case example is used to illustrate the model and the structures and strategies employed at each level. The intervention model empowers families, facilitates their connections with other providers, and minimises the need for hospital admissions. The model also promotes collaborative and systemic practice in a child and adolescent mental health service.     

Equally spaced design points in polynomial regression: A comparison of systematic sampling methods with the optimal design of experiments

In some situations an experimenter may desire to have equally spaced design points. Three methods of obtaining such points on the interval [—1,1]—namely systematic random sampling, centrally located systematic sampling, and a purposive systematic sampling method which includes the endpoints - 1 and 1 as two of the design points-are evaluated under the D-optimal and G-optimal criteria. These methods are also compared to the optimal designs in polynomial regression and to the limiting designs of Kiefer and Studden (1976).     

Death preparation and anxiety: a survey in Hong Kong

This study reports the results of a survey on death preparation, death-related beliefs, and death anxiety in a Hong Kong sample. Respondents (N = 285) recruited from the community were asked if they have prepared for themselves a life insurance, a will, and a resting place (e.g. burial site, columbarium, etc.). Questions about their death-related cultural beliefs and anxiety were also asked. Results indicated that respondents who have thought of preparing for their own deaths but not yet acted out (contemplators) held stronger traditional cultural beliefs about death than respondents who have either done the preparations (planners) or never thought of the idea (non-contemplators). Contemplators also reported higher death anxiety. Despite limitations of the study's design, the current results suggest the beliefs in cultural taboo may play a role in the preparation for one's death.     

Antiracism Organizing and Resistance in Nursing: African Canadian Women*

Cette étude porte sur la lutte menée en Ontario et au Québec de la fin des années 1970 jusqu'aux années 1990 par les femmes de couleur - et plus particulièrement par les infirmières noires -contre le racisme sévissant dans le contexte de leur vie professionnelle. L'auteure procède à une analyse intégrale du phénomène dans une perspective antiraciste. Elle démontre que le racisme est le principal facteur opérant dans la subordination des infirmières noires et que le parti pris contre les femmes et les préjugés fondés sur les origines sociales ont toujours été tributaires d'un racisme sous-jacent. This study examines women of colour, specifically African Canadian nurses, organizing and resisting racism in nursing in Ontario and Quebec from the late 1970s to the 1990s, from an integrative anti-racism perspective. The author demonstrates that although racism is more visibly salient in black nurses' subordination, gender and class have historically been racialized in nursing, a phenomenon that continues today.
