In many organizations business coaching is one of the favorite personnel development tools. The focus is clearly on economical targets. In these days, however, this is not enough to accompany managers successfully. The results of a qualitative empirical study show that not only business related topics but also relevant personal topics of a manager should be integrated into a coaching process to ensure lasting work improvements as well as any necessary individual development.     

Integrating Social Work Perspectives and Models with Concepts,Methods and Skills with Other Professions’ Specialized Approaches

In this article, the authors encourage social work practitioners to identify with and adopt distinctive social work perspectives and practice models rather than solely embrace models or approaches developed by and for other professions. We do so because these perspectives are most responsive to our professions’ mission of social justice and social purpose of paying equal attention to people and their environments. For heuristic purposes, we present and illustrate the ecological perspective and life modeled approach. Since no social work model or approach can take into account every type of life stressor, event and condition, we demonstrate how we can borrow and integrate specialized concepts, methods and techniques from other profession’s approaches. The authors identify five characteristics which borrowed content should meet in order to integrate well with social work models. Accordingly, concepts, methods and skills from a few approaches have particular relevance for social work direct practice: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy; Motivational Interviewing; Narrative Therapy and Solution-Focused Practice. Moreover, the authors present and illustrate the process of borrowing and integrating concepts, methods and skills from other professions to deepen social work practice.

Influence at Work: A 25-Year Program of Research

Organization of any kind, from prehistorichunting societies to companies working through theworldwide web, operate with a distribution of influenceand power among their members. This distribution of influence has consequences at three levels: forthe people working in the organization, for theorganization itself, and, from time to time, for membersof society outside the organization. A series of action- and policy-oriented projects on thedistribution of influence were developed by or incollaboration with the Centre for Decision MakingStudies of The Tavistock Institute over a quarter of acentury. They started with a seven-country comparativeresearch on top management decision making, followed bytwo 12-country studies on Industrial Democracy and a5-year longitudinal program in seven companies in three countries. These and two longitudinalprojects in Britian, one on a motor car manufacturer andthe other on an airport, used a similar conceptualframework. The article draws on the evidence from this program of work, describes the evolvingtheoretical model and concludes that organizationalinfluence sharing appears to have made only limitedprogress during the last 50 years. Four explanations are put forward: overidealistic expectations;a tendency to ignore the need for certain necessaryantecedents, like competence; a tendency to act as ifinfluence sharing is not subject to contingencies like the nature of tasks; and probably mostimportantly, the almost universal tendency to designinfluence sharing measures through uncoordinatedmechanistic social engineering.     

Utilizing cognitive-behavioral techniques in psychodynamic practice with clients diagnosed as borderline

Many factors, including theoretical controversies, treatment constraints, and an increasing awareness of the high incidence of childhood trauma, compel practitioners to reevaluate both theory and practice in the treatment of clients diagnosed as borderline. Our purpose in this paper is to encourage clinicians who practice primarily from a psychodynamic perspective to reconsider the judicious use of relevant cognitive/behavioral techniques with this population. We focus on the rationale of utilizing relevant cognitive/behavioral techniques in out-patient settings, and discuss specific problem areas where these techniques might be useful. These problem areas include (1) cognitive and affective splitting, (2) affective dysregulation, and (3) faulty attributions. Each problem area is discussed with clinical illustrations of appropriate cognitive/behavioral interventions. The vignettes also illustrate the essential role the therapeutic relationship plays in order for cognitive/behavioral interventions to be effective.
