Controlling the size of multivariate outlier tests with the MCD estimator of scatter

Multivariate outlier detection requires computation of robust distances to be compared with appropriate cut-off points. In this paper we propose a new calibration method for obtaining reliable cut-off points of distances derived from the MCD estimator of scatter. These cut-off points are based on a more accurate estimate of the extreme tail of the distribution of robust distances. We show that our procedure gives reliable tests of outlyingness in almost all situations of practical interest, provided that the sample size is not much smaller than 50. Therefore, it is a considerable improvement over all the available MCD procedures, which are unable to provide good control over the size of multiple outlier tests for the data structures considered in this paper.

Nonparametric smoothing using state space techniques

The authors examine the equivalence between penalized least squares and state space smoothing using random vectors with infinite variance. They show that despite infinite variance, many time series techniques for estimation, significance testing, and diagnostics can be used. The Kalman filter can be used to fit penalized least squares models, computing the smoothed quantities and related values. Infinite variance is equivalent to differencing to stationarity, and to adding explanatory variables. The authors examine constructs called “smoothations” which they show to be fundamental in smoothing. Applications illustrate concepts and methods.     

The Relationship between Change and Satisfaction: Parents' Experiences in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

In the consumer satisfaction literature, there is little exploration of the relationship between change and satisfaction and the two are often conflated. This qualitative study interviewed parents a year after using child and adolescent mental health services. Eliciting an account of their experiences enabled the development of ‘grounded theories’ about what constitutes satisfaction for parents. The outcomes suggest that in addition to the expectable stories of ‘high change and satisfaction’ or ‘no change and low satisfaction’, considerable numbers of people are satisfied with a service despite experiencing little or no change, while others who experience positive change are not satisfied. Understanding these alternative stories helps address critical issues that affect the way therapists respond to people's needs and provide services — these matters are often within the capacity of therapists and services to address, even when working with limited resources.

20世纪60年代,在西方国家出现了以对现代性解构和否定为基本特征的后现代主义,法国女性主义在西方女性主义的后现代理论转向过程中做出了突出贡献。法国主流女性主义后现代理论转向的思想渊源主要有拉康的精神分析学,以福柯、利奥塔和德里达为代表的法国后现代主义社会思潮,法国后现代女性主义代表人物主要有希克苏斯、伊里格芮和克里丝蒂娃。对法国后现代女性主义理论的研究将对中国女性主义研究提供有益的启示。     

A local-influence-based diagnostic approach to a speeded item response theory model

Summary.  An item response theory model for dealing with omitted responses in a test is proposed. In this model formulation, non-response does not only depend on an examinee's ability and on item difficulty, but additionally also on 'test speededness'. Using a local-influence-based diagnostic approach, the sensitivity of the model regarding assumptions concerning the drop-out mechanism is explored. The methodology proposed is applied to the Chilean Sistema de Medición de la Calidad de la Educación mathematics test case-study.     

A Note on the Inoperability Input-Output Model

In this note, we propose some comments and some extensions of the inoperability input-output model (IIOM), as recently proposed by Santos and Haimes (2004). In particular, we propose the use of some analytic tools capable of providing information on the reaction of sectors subsequent to a terrorist attack on infrastructure service sectors. These tools, namely, the field of influence and the multiplier product matrix, provide information on the way sectors react to a shock on the aggregate demand and/or to a (temporary or permanent) change of production function coefficients. Finally, using the 2003 65 sectors input-output matrix for the U.S. economy, a simple empirical example is presented.     

Bayesian inference for the mean and standard deviation of a normal population when only the sample size,mean and range are observed

Consider a random sample X₁, X₂,…, X_n, from a normal population with unknown mean and standard deviation. Only the sample size, mean and range are recorded and it is necessary to estimate the unknown population mean and standard deviation. In this paper the estimation of the mean and standard deviation is made from a Bayesian perspective by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to simulate samples from the intractable joint posterior distribution of the mean and standard deviation. The proposed methodology is applied to simulated and real data. The real data refers to the sugar content (^oBRIX level) of orange juice produced in different countries.
