Who Gets to ‘Work Hard,Play Hard’? Gendering the Work–Life Balance Rhetoric in Canadian Tech Companies

This article is based on an exploratory study of the implicit gender norms in work–life balance (WLB) rhetoric in ten Canadian information and communication technologies (ICT) organizations. Interviews with human resources (HR) managers and preliminary company website analysis revealed a masculinist and heterosexist bias in the implementation of WLB practices, legitimized by the gender composition of the workforce and the demanding yet inherently rewarding nature of the ICT sector. Participants deliberately separated care (read: childcare) from WLB (read: flexible hours and working from home), reproducing the assumption that an ‘ordinary’ worker is a man with a female partner who assumes primary responsibility for the reproductive realm. The study concludes with: (i) recommendations to increase HR's role in providing functional support for WLB practices and (ii) three future directions for research. This article contributes to a general call in feminist scholarship to apply a gendered lens to WLB practices. 相似文献

Using a national district-level dataset of India composed of information on investments in primary schooling [data from the District Information Survey for Education (DISE, 2007/8)] and information on demographic characteristics of elected officials [data from the Election Commission of India (ECI, 2000/04)], we examined the relationship between women’s representation in State Legislative Assembly (SLA) seats and district-level investments in primary schooling. We used OLS regressions adjusting for confounders and spatial autocorrelation, and estimated separate models for North and South India. Women’s representation in general SLA seats typically was negatively associated with investments in primary-school amenities and teachers; women’s representation in SLA seats reserved for under-represented minorities, i.e., scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, typically was positively associated with investments in primary schooling, especially in areas addressing the basic needs of poor children. Women legislators’ gender and caste identities may shape their decisions about redistributive educational policies. 相似文献

Much research has been done on demographic manifestations of son preference, particularly girls’ excess mortality; however,
there is less research that focuses on son preference itself. This paper analyzes the determinants of son preference in rural
India. We separate the independent, relative effects of characteristics of individual women and their households, village
opportunities for women and village development, and social norms. We look at both socioeconomic and sociocultural variables.
Finally, we examine whether predictors of son preference differ by desired family size. Our data come from the National Family
Health Survey (NFHS) India, 1992–1993. We use an ordered logit model, with dummy variables for state of residence. Our analysis
shows that women’s education, particularly at secondary and higher levels, is consistently and significantly associated with
weaker son preference, regardless of desired family size. Once factors measuring social norms, such as marriage customs, caste
and religion, are included, economic wealth and women’s employment at household or village levels are not significant. Media
access remains significant, suggesting an influence of “modernizing” ideas. Among social factors, caste and religion are associated
with son preference but, once state of residence is controlled for, marriage patterns and cultivation patterns are insignificant.
The strength and significance for son preference of many determinants differs by desired family size. Our results suggest
that policy makers seeking to influence son preference need to identify and target different policy levers to women in different
fertility and social contexts, rather than try an approach of one size that fits all. 相似文献

This article examines the role of the sex composition of surviving older siblings on gender differences in childhood nutrition and immunization, using data from the National Family Health Survey, India (1992-1993). Logit and ordered logit models were used for severe stunting and immunization, respectively. The results show selective neglect of children with certain sex and birth-order combinations that operate differentially for girls and boys. Both girls and boys who were born after multiple same-sex siblings experience poor outcomes, suggesting that parents want some balance in sex composition. However, the preference for sons persists, and boys who were born after multiple daughters have the best possible outcomes. 相似文献

The author considers the problem of finding designs insensitive to the presence of an outlier in a treatment-control block design setup for estimating the set of elementary contrasts between the effects of each test treatment and a control treatment. The criterion of robustness suggested by Mandal (1989) in block design setup for estimating a full set of orthonormal treatment contrasts is adapted. A new class viz. partially balanced treatment incomplete block designs (PBTIBD) is introduced and it is shown that balanced treatment incomplete block designs (BTIBD) and PBTIB designs, under certain conditions, are robust in the previous sense. Such designs are important in the sense that the inference on the treatment contrasts under consideration remain unaffected by the presence of an outlier. 相似文献

We analyse the experiences of international students living in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of transnationalism that understands mobility as broadly uninterrupted, continuing and taken-for-granted, and international student migration (ISM) literature. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, people had to contend with sudden border closures and stringent restrictions on all forms of travel. International students are regarded as the archetypal trans-migrants with frequent mobility and often multiple attachments to place. We interrogate these assumptions of mobility by drawing on interview data from 13 international students in Ontario from April to June of 2020. We found that international students experienced the pandemic transnationally and faced increased challenges, which heightened their reliance on support from transnational families, and generated anxieties about their future career and mobilities. We bring transnational theories into conversation with ISM literature to better understand international students’ lived experiences in Canada during a pandemic. 相似文献

Canada's immigration selection regime uses a combination of human capital measures and direct employer involvement to select economic immigrants, emphasizing pre-arranged employment as critical to secure permanent resident status. This trend affects international students in unique ways. We interviewed 17 Chinese women international students residing in Canada about their decision to study and desire to stay in Canada. Participants faced difficulties in accumulating adequate employment records for immigration applications and employer-driven immigration pathways put them at considerable risk of deskilling and exploitation. When comparing available immigration pathways, we found that participants had more success with provincial programmes than federal ones because of the availability of flexible pathways, greater options and lower requirements for eligibility. We conclude with three policy recommendations to highlight the importance of periodic revisions to selection criteria to balance human capital measures and employer reliance to retain talented foreign workers in Canada. 相似文献

Labour migration is commonly attached to the idea of a ‘better’ future for the migrants and their families, but there is less emphasis on how this does not materialize for many labour migrants. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among Nepalis working in Qatar and select families in Nepal, this article focuses on the intergenerational migration cycle or migration as open-ended and ongoing across generations. While the Gulf migration scholarship has mostly concentrated on low-skilled workers, I draw on the cases of migrants across different skill/income levels to show how the migrants’ and/or families’ desires for ‘ongoing mobility’ to the Gulf or the West panned out differently. I argue that despite wanting a different and better life path for the future generation, one unlike theirs of labour in the Gulf, many Gulf migrants are unable to meet these familial expectations; rather, migration histories repeat in a continual quest to overcome economic constraints. 相似文献
