Toward ‘mental accessibility’: changing the mental obstacles that future Human Resource Management practitioners have about the employment of people with disabilities

This paper presents the results of a participatory research project undertaken with Hungarian MSc students specializing in Human Resource Management and Development about the employment of people with disabilities. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is very high in Hungary and HR practitioners have a key role in maintaining or reducing barriers to their employment. Following the tradition of critical pedagogy, the aim of the research project was twofold. Firstly, we aimed to reveal the mental patterns, attitudes and beliefs of future HR practitioners to the employment of people with disabilities (which might be root causes of domination, discrimination or exploitation). Secondly, through using a radical methodological approach – cooperative inquiry – the researchers wished to emancipate students and challenge their frozen beliefs about disability as well as the positivist value system which usually dominates business education. The main result of the research project was to challenge the medical approach to disability which formerly dominated the belief systems of our student co-researchers, thereby engendering a more critical worldview.     

Evaluating Behavioral Self-Monitoring With Accuracy Training for Changing Computer Work Postures

The primary purpose of this study was to replicate and extend a study by Gravina, Austin, Schroedter, and Loewy (2008) Gravina, N., Austin, J, Schroedter, L. and Loewy, S. 2008. The effects of self-monitoring on safe postural performance. Journal of Organizational Behavior Management, 28: 238–259. [Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]. A similar self-monitoring procedure, with the addition of self-monitoring accuracy training, was implemented to increase the percentage of observations in which participants worked in neutral postures. The accuracy training required the three participants to practice self-monitoring with the experimenter at least 20 times and to meet the criteria of 90% accuracy for the last 10 monitors. Feedback was delivered after each monitor. Two postures for each of the three participants were targeted by the intervention, and all six improved with an average effect size of 4.7 (range: 3.4 to 8.2) compared to Gravina et al., in which effect sizes averaged 1.9 (range:??.1 to 3.2). In addition, participant self-monitoring was more accurate overall (77%) when compared to Gravina et al. (44%).     

Social work programmes in the social democratic welfare regime

In this article we examine the emergence of social worker training in the Nordic countries and discuss the possible effects that the social democratic welfare regime has had on such training. We also discuss the development in recent decades of the academisation of the training and the establishment of social work as a subject of research and teaching. The early history of social worker education is based on archival material, national inquiries and secondary sources. Our presentation of the recent history of social work education is based on the responses to a questionnaire sent to teachers of social work in 33 Nordic social work programmes, and on a survey of course syllabi and prospectuses. It is also based on the reading lists for the social work courses in these programmes.     

Has the Portuguese NHS Achieved its Objectives of Equity and Efficiency?

The Portuguese healthcare system has been in a state of continuous change since the political revolution of 1974, which brought about a constitutional commitment to a universal and comprehensive national health service. Despite much legislative activity, only partial implementation of these laws has taken place and the current system requires further changes if it is to attain its stated objectives of increasing equity and efficiency. This article analyses and assesses the state of the healthcare system in Portugal based on a review of the literature and interviews with key policymakers and academics and evaluates it against the criteria of equity and efficiency.     

Intentional Families: Fictive Kin Ties Between Cross‐Gender,Different Sexual Orientation Friends

This study explores the nature of intentional family relationships between friends of different genders and different sexual orientations. Drawing on in‐depth interviews with 46 members of 23 friendship dyads, I first make the case that the friends considered one another family and I specify the criteria they use for making such designations. I then focus on the ways in which gender and sexual orientation influenced relationships between lesbians and straight men and between gay men and straight women. The data provided evidence that the dyad members identified one another as family and served the functions of family for each other. The findings also suggest that various gender issues affect cross‐gender, different sexual orientation relationships. Exploring the meaning and functioning of these intentional family ties documents their existence and illuminates their meaning and maintenance.     

Assessment for home care: Negotiating solutions for individual needs

This article explores care management as an activity that regulates the distribution of society's resources for home care. It focuses on interaction in assessment meetings, which are part of the planning of services and care for old people in Sweden. The aim was to acquire an understanding of how old people, as applicants, account for their needs for care, and how these accounts are negotiated and positioned in talk. Twenty home care assessments were audio-taped and the data were analyzed using discursive analysis. It was found that the assessment meetings had an institutional structure within, which old people, as applicants and with individual needs for care, were assessed within fixed institutional categories. Furthermore, analysis showed how interaction during assessment meetings functioned as formal problem-solving, in which applicants' accounts of their health issues were negotiated, contributing to the construction of their identity as home care receivers.     

Real data, real learning and the London Olympics

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are coming to London in 2012, and there will be huge interest, especially among the young. Could the Games be used to involve students of all ages in a large scale project that involves and interests them to break down their fear of statistics and to motivate learning? Neville Davies of the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education appeals for help in a major teaching and learning initiative based on the London Olympics. Significance is proud to announce the launch of a scheme that could bring thousands of students, nationally and internationally, to appreciate and value the usefulness of statistics.
