The Evolution of Understanding Menopause in Clinical Treatment

This paper integrates the meanings created about menopause through a biopsychosocial perpective. Once understood only as a biological illness creating affective disorders, new paradigms provide understanding based on the psychological and social constructions of the process. History emphasizes a view of women experiencing increasing deficiency and loss, while modern interpretations view women as gaining new freedoms. Case material is presented to direct attention to the meanings of menopause as it emerges in the treatment process.     

How Adult Learners Make Sense of Their Dyslexia

Although dyslexia was officially recognised as a disability in the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act, more widespread awareness of hidden disabilities has often been and remains problematic. Comparatively little has been written about the experiences of dyslexic adults; this paper aims to demonstrate that the non-recognition of dyslexia has been inherently disabling for one group of adult learners who participated in focus group research after attending a cycle of evening classes provided for adult dyslexic students. The concept of recognition is analysed in detail in a number of ways: the official recognition or 'diagnosis' of dyslexia and the consequences of labelling in primary and secondary education; the effects of non-recognition; recognition of dyslexia in wider society and the media; and, finally, the importance to them of recognition and understanding in their personal contexts.     

Religiosity and Contraceptive Method Choice: The Jewish Population of Israel

The primary purpose of this paper is to explore therelationship between religiosity and contraceptivemethod choice, among users of contraception. Weanalyze a representative sample of 1,751 married urbanIsraeli Jewish women interviewed in 1987–1988. Ourfindings indicate that the contraceptive choices ofreligious women are determined largely byconsiderations unrelated to religious doctrine. Acombination of factors, including the suitability ofspecific methods to fertility control needs, peerinfluences, and other cultural effects, appear tomodify the acceptance and application of a particularreligious theology.     

Leadership, self, and identity: A review and research agenda

This article reviews empirical research on the role of follower self-conception in leadership effectiveness, and specifies an agenda for future research in this area. The review shows that several aspects of follower self-conception (i.e., self-construal, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and self-consistency) may be affected by leadership, and may mediate the effects of leadership on follower behavior. There also is consistent evidence that follower self-construal moderates the impact of leadership on follower attitudes and behavior. Two key themes for future research are defined. First, future research should focus on the development of theory about the role of relational self-construal in the leadership process. Second, it seems particularly valuable to develop theory about the interplay of different aspects of follower self-conception in leadership effectiveness, including the interactive effects of these aspects of self. Working backwards from these theoretical models of follower self-conception, specific leader behavior relevant to these aspects of self should then be identified.     

Group issues and activities for female teen survivors of sexual abuse

The impact of sexual abuse can be devastating, especially for young girls at the crucial stage of adolescent development. Ramifications for these survivors of incest and extrafamilial abuse are addressed. Group therapy as an effective means of intervention is described. Group considerations discussed include group name; member and leadership selection; confidentiality; contracting and closed nature; parent meetings; self-disclosure; and objectives.Twelve weeks of group topics, activities, and homework are detailed. These topics are applicable to most female teen survivors of sexual abuse, independent of the age or gender of their perpetrators.
