Estate Inheritance: A Sociological Lacuna*

Estate inheritance, a frequently mentioned but rarely examined feature of stratification systems, has been a neglected area of research in sociology. In this paper, several possible causes of the sociological neglect are discussed. The treatment of inheritance patterns in functionalist and conflict theories of stratification is analyzed, and an overview of existing research on inheritance is presented. Finally, a conflict theory of stratification that incorporates the phenomenon of inheritance is proposed, and avenues for further research are suggested.     

ORAL TECHNOLOGIES

Studies of oral traditions have demonstrated that complex and lengthy accounts of the past have been composed in oral form-without benefit of a written language. Most students of orality have concluded that an oral technology is not capable of retaining precise and accurate information. However, that conclusion may be a derivative of the fact that most studies of orality have focused on epics. Archaeological and historical data from ancient civilizations and ethnographic reports of knowledge retained in nonliterate societies are here examined. These data suggest that precise and accurate calendric, agricultural, and navigational information was retained in oral form. Oral technologies were probably one of the cornerstones of ancient nonliterate civilizations.     

Clinical observations on interferences of early father absence in the achievement of femininity

In clinical work, we have observed that the loss of the father through divorce has a significant effect on the young girl's developing sense of feminity. This paper briefly reviews the research findings from sex-role development theory and psychoanalytic theory, and presents clinical discussions of latency aged girls whose parents divorced during their daughter's early and oedipal years. The most common defensive or coping patterns seen in these child patients during latency are identified, with clinical material presented to illustrate both the existence of these patterns and implications for treatment.     

Nonverbal behavior in families with adolescents

In fifty-three families, mothers, fathers and one adolescent were videotaped discussing two issues relevant to the adolescent's behavior: the aspects of their behavior they could change, and rules appropriate to life in the family. Family members later watched these videotapes and rated themselves and each other every 15 seconds on levels of perceived anxiety, involvement, strength and friend-liness. From these videotapes, each family member's behavior was also coded for the use of smiles, various face and head movements and gestures. Results revealed that adolescents looked frequently at both parents, but parents looked even more at each other and the adolescent. Adolescents smiled more than their parents, while mothers smiled and nodded their heads more than fathers. More nonverbal expresivity occurred in conversations between parents and daughters than between parents and sons, although these results were mainly due to the behavior of fathers with daughters. Ratings of involvement by parents were related to the adolescent's nonverbal behaviors, but other ratings were not. Mothers rated adolescents as more involved when they used more head up movements and nods. Fathers rated adolescents as more involved when they gazed and smiled more.     

Obstacles to research analysis

1. The homeless population is composed of subgroups with varying mental health status and needs. 2. Different research designs and data collection methods require differing psychosocial abilities and skills on the part of the respondent. 3. As a result of the psychosocial abilities required and method of sampling, studies are likely to either underrepresent or overrepresent the severely mentally ill homeless. 4. Caution must be exercised in drawing conclusions from any one study.     

Invasion. A hospital in transition following the 1983 Grenadian intervention

Stress, confusion, and a sense of loss were inevitable during the hospital relocation, especially given the large number of clients, ward communities, and staff needed to move and adjust to change. Despite the fact that the change was perceived as a positive and progressive step in psychiatric-mental health care in Grenada, there were many obstacles and much resistance to overcome. As expected, staff's and clients' fears centered around themes of impending loss and abandonment. An understanding of the transition process, along with the availability of experienced hospital staff for support and guidance, greatly aided the relocation process. Relocation still presented problems and Mt. Gay Hospital continues to struggle to carry out the lasting and beneficial changes that will best promote a therapeutic and culturally sensitive client/staff environment. Despite the fact that the hospital relocation was not entirely self-determined, but partially imposed by political circumstances, a positive resolution of the crisis occurred. The crisis brought about the change that, in this circumstance, is seen as synonymous with growth. It acted as a catalyst to bring about help from unexpected and much needed sources (U.S.A.I.D./Project Hope), which may not have otherwise been available to facilitate such a change. Richmond Hill Mental Hospital took control and advantage of a crisis situation and made it serve its immediate and pressing need for a new psychiatric hospital.     

The college student-athlete: psychological considerations and interventions

This article reviews the literature dealing with problems brought by student-athletes to college counseling and mental health centers. Among the issues discussed are fear of success; identity conflict; social isolation; poor athletic performance; academic problems; and career or vocational concerns. In addition, the authors examine the paradox that although athletes experience as much or more psychological distress as nonathletes, research indicates that athletes use professional services less often than nonathletes. Finally, the authors review approaches to psychological intervention, including short-term psychotherapy, very brief interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy, and career/vocational counseling, and discuss special considerations for conducting therapy with athletes.
