Technological newness: An empirical study in the process industries   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Technological change in product development is a crucial issue in the management of technology. The entire sweep of technological changes over the past hundred of years is, in essence, the sum of thousands of individual product development projects in thousands of firms. Yet the degree of technological change in individual development projects has not been extensively studied. This paper presents a four-dimensional characterization of technological newness for product development projects in the process industries in which product development is closely tied to process innovation. The characterization uses four dimensions of change that are required in the development of new products: chemistry, production equipment, fabrication technology and process control. Based on the framework of technological newness, the paper presents data collected on the degree of process change in a set of 20 product development projects conducted by a large manufacturer of advanced polymers. The data provide a clear demonstration of the value of the measurement framework, showing a strong relationship between the characterization of change and the project performance.  相似文献

The potential for peers to influence obesity risk behavior increases in adolescence, yet there are knowledge gaps of how behaviors are modified in response to peers over time. This study examined how personal friendship network characteristics were associated with obesity‐related behaviors from late childhood to early adolescence. Two waves of friendship, physical activity, screen time, and dietary recall data were collected from 11‐ to 13‐year‐old students (99% retention) in Australia (n = 308) over a five‐ to eight‐month period. Regression models identified friendship network characteristics that predicted later health behaviors which varied by gender and behavior type, such as the number of friends positively associated with physical activity intensity (males) and screen time (females). The need for considering context to influence behavior change is discussed.  相似文献

This article considers whether a nation that fares relatively well (or badly) on a particular dimension of mortality risk tends also to do so on others. Working with 2016 data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, we focus on six causes of premature death: transport accidents, other accidents, homicide, early-childhood diseases, and both communicable and noncommunicable diseases beyond early childhood. We consider data from all 26 nations that had populations of at least 50 million in 2016, as well as 15 clusters of smaller nations that are similar in longevity (e.g., Scandinavia). We use an analytic method that facilitates useful comparisons across nations, for it recognizes that some potential death risks can be underestimated because citizens die sooner from other causes. We estimate reductions in lifespan from each of the six causes relative to natural lifespan as defined by GBD. It emerges that, for all 15 pairings among the six causes, these reductions are positively correlated. We introduce metrics to summarize a nation's overall “safety status,” and find that losses of longevity because of premature deaths are nearly three decades fewer in the safest countries than in the least safe ones. Turning to possible explanations for the cross-national differences, we find a strong association between a nation's safety status and both its economic wherewithal as indicated by the 2016 GDP per capita (adjusted for purchasing power parity) and its income inequality as reflected by its Gini coefficient.  相似文献

This article explains the currently available capability to use formal statistical index number theory to measure the economy's money supply accurately. The new procedure is illustrated by exploring the tightness of money during the recent three-year period of “monetarist” Federal Reserve policy. When measured by a properly constructed statistical index number, the rate of growth of the money supply is found to have been lower and more volatile than when measured by the official simple sum monetary aggregates. As a result, targeting the simple sum aggregates may have induced a tighter and more volatile policy than was intended.  相似文献

Outliers can occur as readily in samples from the finite populations (e.g. in sample surveys) as in samples from infinite populations. However, in the vast literature on outliers there is almost no mention of outlier tests for data from sample surveys. We examine the behaviour of some standard outlier test statistics for infinite populations when these are applied to finite populations, examining their properties by extensive simulation studies. Some anomalous results are obtained Nsuggesting a fundamental difficulty in testing outliers for the finite population case.  相似文献

Separability assumptions on functional structure have received a great deal of attention from econometricians and economic theorists because (a) separability provides the fundamental linkage between aggregation over goods and the maximization principles in economic theory, (b) separability provides the theoretical basis for partitioning the economy's structure into sectors, and (c) separability provides a theoretical hypothesis, which can produce parameter restrictions, permitting great simplification in estimation of large demand systems. The power of the various available tests for separability has never been determined, however. We conduct Monte Carlo studies to examine the capability of currently available methods to provide correct inferences about separability.  相似文献

The stories we tell about the linkages between gender and health are shaped by the paradigms that guide our inquiries. Paradigms direct our attention away from certain phenomena and toward others. In particular, the dominant paradigms in the study of gender and health have promoted studies of differences, not similarities. Even in the face of strong challenges, many old paradigms persist. Continued reliance on flawed and insensitive paradigms is a major social issue. The aim of this article is to illustrate where we have come from, where we are now, and where we are heading in the study of gender and health. I will do this by tracking changes in the underlying paradigms that have shaped this research area, focusing on the literature in the area of gender and psychosocial factors, especially social-role experiences, and stress-related mental and physical health, to highlight changes that have taken place in these paradigms.  相似文献

Since its bi-cultural foundation with Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 by Māori, the indigenous Polynesian people of Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), chiefs and representatives of the British Crown), cultural identities have expanded through immigration. While Aotearoa NZ's government seeks to encourage workplace diversity in public service agencies, developments are being disrupted by Covid-19. Using a typology of equality approaches, this study appraises the “ambition” of equity progress in Aotearoa NZ public service agencies based on content analysis of interviews with sector experts, agency staff and managers. In terms of equity discourses, workplace inequities emerge as more pronounced for Māori and Pasifika (the indigenous peoples of the Pacific), indicating that more “ambitious” equality initiatives, including those which aim for intersectional inclusion, are needed. The study thereby contributes a more nuanced understanding of equity approaches that could meaningfully inform workplace initiatives designed to recognize, value and empower gender diversity. Its relevance for Aotearoa NZ, which has one of the most diverse working-age populations in the world, is likely to resonate in other countries where workforce diversity is yet to translate into equitable engagement in and experiences of work organizations by all.  相似文献

Population ecologists suggest that inertialpressures make it difficult for organizations to adapttheir strategies and structures in response toenvironmental changes. One way in which organizations may attempt to overcome these inertial tendenciesis by selecting executive successors with differentcareer specializations than their predecessors, whichmay enable them to better cope with changingenvironmental contingencies. The present study examined therelationship between the previous CEO s careerspecialization, the corporate strategy in place at thetime of the succession event, and the careerspecialization of the new CEO from 1981-1990. The resultssuggest that organizations often chose successors withdifferent career specializations than theirpredecessors, and that previous corporate strategy wasa relatively poor predictor of successors specializations.These results differ from earlier research findingsconcerning executive succession between 1957-1981.Possible reasons for these differences are discussed, and the implications for future research are considered.  相似文献
