BUILDING ON FAMILY STRENGTH: A STUDY OF FAMILIES WITH POSITIVE ADJUSTMENT TO THE BIRTH OF A DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED CHILD*

This research was based on the assumption that much could be learned from families that had adapted well to the birth of a child with developmental disabilities. It was of interest to explore what made these families strong and if consistent patterns of coping and adjustment could be observed. Positive adaptation seemed unrelated to degree of the child's disability or level of soothability, and further, did not seem directly linked to family income level. However, it appeared that two-parent families with few children were at a distinct advantage. Positive family adaptation appeared to be tied to functioning of the parental subsystem and the skillful utilization by parents of family and friendship network resources.     

Children,Crime, Policy and Practice: Neither Welfare nor Justice

In February 1993 when the Prime Minister proclaimed that ‘society needs to condemn a little more and understand a little less’, and the Home Secretary referred to ‘really persistent nasty little juveniles’ (Daily Mail, 22 February 1993), they set the tone for subsequent policy and practice in relation to children in trouble. It is a policy and practice which in ‘condemning more’ and ‘understanding less’ rides roughshod over the welfare needs of children and negates their claims to justice. Moreover, the representation of children as ‘really persistent nasty little juveniles’ has apparently served to legitimise the harsh excesses of government responses. This paper challenges such ‘legitimacy’ and calls for a fundamental change in the policy and practice relating to children in trouble.     

Probabilistic Connotations of Carcinogen Hazard Classifications: Analysis of Survey Data for Anchoring Effects

A study was undertaken to test for anchoring effects when numerical probabilities were elicited for carcinogen hazard designations. Subjects were asked to assign probabilities to both probable and possible. The sequence was randomly varied so that half of the subjects evaluated probable first and half evaluated possible first. While there was no consensus on the numerical probabilistic meanings assigned to these verbal expressions, in general, probable was assigned a higher probability than possible and there were specific values that were assigned frequently, indicating some consistency in interpretation. There appeared to be a fairly constant scaling factor between the probabilities assigned to the designations. Anchoring was manifested in two ways: a smaller difference between the designations when they were evaluated in sequence than when they were evaluated in isolation, and assignment of readily accessible "benchmark" values such as 50% and 75%.     

Appropriate Terminology for the Alcohol,Eating, and Physical Activity Relationship

Abstract

“Drunkorexia” merges prior literature identifying positive relationships between (a) alcohol use/abuse and disordered eating/eating disorders, (b) alcohol use/abuse and physical activity, and (c) disordered eating/eating disorders and physical activity. The term, highlighting an individual's proactive and/or reactive weight management behaviors (ie, disordered eating, physical activity) in relation to alcohol consumption, originated in news editorials and has recently gained recognition via use in scholarly publications. The purpose of this commentary is to recommend discontinuing use of the term “drunkorexia” due to (a) inconsistent definitions of drunkorexia across investigations, (b) drunkorexia being a misnomer, and (c) the medical community's lack of recognition/acceptance of drunkorexia. Because the behaviors encompassed by drunkorexia are of concern to researchers and health professionals, future investigations are still warranted. However, until a medically recognized term/phrase is accepted, scholars should utilize more appropriate characterizations such as “weight-conscious drinkers,” “weight management behaviors of drinkers,” or “Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified” (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision).     

HIV/AIDS and constructs of gay community: Researching educational practice within community-based health promotion for gay men

This paper reports on the methodology of a comparative study of three gay communities in Australia as they struggle with HIV/AIDS. The study focused on the pedagogy and practice of HIV/AIDS education for disease prevention and for health maintenance for people living with HIV/AIDS, through the investigation of three problematics: (1) constructs of 'community'; (2) the centrality of gay community-based health educators; and (3) the relations of gay men within and to their communities. The study was conceived of as a critical ethnography involving a three-part sample in the three sites and using three related research methods: (1) individual and group interviews; (2) textual analysis; and (3) participant observation. The theoretical bases for the study and its design lay in notions of 'performativity', community and adult education, organizational and institutional processes, and the idea of a 'post-AIDS' sociality. The methodology is explained in detail, as are various consultative processes embedded in the design to facilitate and enable a productive relationship with the communities researched.
