This paper reports on the methodology of a comparative study of three gay communities in Australia as they struggle with HIV/AIDS. The study focused on the pedagogy and practice of HIV/AIDS education for disease prevention and for health maintenance for people living with HIV/AIDS, through the investigation of three problematics: (1) constructs of 'community'; (2) the centrality of gay community-based health educators; and (3) the relations of gay men within and to their communities. The study was conceived of as a critical ethnography involving a three-part sample in the three sites and using three related research methods: (1) individual and group interviews; (2) textual analysis; and (3) participant observation. The theoretical bases for the study and its design lay in notions of 'performativity', community and adult education, organizational and institutional processes, and the idea of a 'post-AIDS' sociality. The methodology is explained in detail, as are various consultative processes embedded in the design to facilitate and enable a productive relationship with the communities researched. 相似文献

Summary There is a move - which originated in England and Wales butis now infiltrating Scottish criminal justice policy and practice- towards increased managerialism and auditing within criminaljustice social work supervision and towards more formalizedand tenuous relationships between worker and service user. Itis suggested that this runs contrary to the needs and expectationsof offenders themselves, who rarely have the opportunity tocontribute their views on criminal justice social work or on'what works'. This article looks at the views of probationersand ex-prisoners about social work supervision both in Englandand Wales and Scotland. It describes one Scottish study, whereprobationers and parolees considered their 'ideal model' ofthe social worker to be someone who was proactive and constructive,offering encouragement and emotional support and acting, intheir eyes, more like a mentor than a monitor. Discipline ranks as one of the major concerns expressed by the public about schools and the education system. These concerns are mirrored in the often dramatic coverage by the media of stories about unruly students, bullying and violence in classrooms and on playgrounds around the country. Many are left with the impression that schools are in a state of crisis and teachers are losing a battle to maintain order. This paper examines the question of whether there is a crisis of discipline in Australian schools. Current family policy suggests that in order to restore family values we, as a society, need to focus on reviving a child-centered household. Full-time mothering is lauded as an honorable choice that will advance this goal and ultimately strengthen traditional family values. However, current welfare policy is contrary to this notion in that mandatory welfare-to-work programs deny women receiving public assistance the choice to be full-time mothers. Based on in-depth interviews with female welfare recipients in four rural Appalachian counties, this paper evaluates the problems women face as they confront the difficult choices of being either a “good mother” or a “good recipient.” From a feminist perspective, findings suggest that welfare reform programs in rural communities have put poor women in a proverbial “catch-22” with regard to effective parenting. Although many of the women strive to be ideal mothers as defined by societal standards, they often find that they cannot carry out the role effectively because of welfare reform regulations. 相似文献
