Parental Behavior and the Quality of Adolescent Friendships: A Social‐Contextual Perspective

On the basis of an evolving social‐contextual perspective, the authors predicted and found that socioeconomic advantage in terms of income and parental education promotes supportive and inhibits hostile parental behaviors toward an adolescent child (N= 221). These parental behaviors predicted similar actions by the child toward a close friend 4 years later. In turn adolescent supportiveness promoted close friendship ties, whereas hostility diminished the quality of friendships. The results support the notion that, to a significant degree, the quality of family interactions: (a) arises from the social context surrounding the family, (b) is transmitted across generations, and (c) has a demonstrable impact on the quality of adolescents' social ties outside the family.     

Indigenous water rights in Australia

Indigenous rights in Australia have undergone enormous transition since the groundbreaking decision in Mabo vs. Queensland in the Australian High Court. This paper explores these changes with a particular emphasis on Aboriginal water rights—an important, and more complicated, corollary to land rights. Mabo opened many possibilities that Aboriginals could claim water rights for everything from irrigation to fishing and spiritual uses. Since 2000 claims of this nature have been made in the federal court system and have challenged the total scope of water law on this the driest inhabited continent on earth. Water law in Australia is primarily a function of state government and these policies have had differential impact on Aboriginal rights which will be explored in this paper.     

The voluntary sector and agency approval: A case study

The article describes and reviews the experiences of the voluntary sector in Oxfordshire in developing a consortium approach to gaining agency approval and the conflicts which were generated with CCETSW over attempts to open up placements and practice learning opportunities with the black voluntary sector in the county.     

The economics of housespousery: An essay on household work

The economic model of the household has been used extensively to examine questions relating to work within the household. This essay takes a critical look at this model and these household work applications. It concludes that the model provides several useful insights regarding factors that have influenced the decline in women's household work time during this century and the changes in the overall economic value of household work. In other areas (e.g., parental child care), the model has rarely been used although it has the potential to provide useful insights. Finally, in certain applications, such as investigations of the gender-related specialization of function within the household, the model relies on unrealistic assumptions that need to be modified if it is to prove useful. His research interests include the consumption, investiment, and time-use behavior of families and family members. Her research interests include family time allocation, household structure and economic well-being, and consumer policy.     

Initial moves with school-family conflict: Entering,engaging and contracting

When beginning with a situation involving the dysfunction of a child, the clinical social worker should take care to enter and engage the relevant family and school systems in a manner that gives the best chance for effective treatment. Using an ecological-systems perspective, the authors discuss problem development as a process, and present a model that searches for accessible variables and establishes an early narrow contract. These moves earn the clinician a place in the system, credibility, and the leverage to work for change.The model of practice presented here is partially based upon work done in 1977–1983 with students of the Columbia University School of Social Work in a student unit based at the Kings County Hospital Center, Brooklyn, New York. The unit was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health Community Mental Health M.S. Program (Grant#5T01-1389505).     

Working for families with dysfunctional children: An approach and structure for the first family therapy interview

A preplanned and structured format for conducting the first family treatment interview is presented in which the assessment task is seen as an opportunity to help a family succeed in constructively, coherently, and logically looking at itself, the problem child, and the problems with which it is attempting to deal. Strategies of modelling openness and competence are suggested. Building on the family's perceptions and plan in the empathic and respectful way is postulated as a way of avoiding power struggles and setting the stage for collaboration. The model is designed to provide a successful first session for the family and therapist, during which they complete a challenging task.
