Results for two-level fractional factorial designs of resolution IV or more

The main theorem of this paper shows that foldover designs are the only (regular or nonregular) two-level factorial designs of resolution IV (strength 3) or more for n   runs and n/3?m?n/2$n/3?m?n/2$ factors. This theorem is a generalization of a coding theory result of Davydov and Tombak [1990. Quasiperfect linear binary codes with distance 4 and complete caps in projective geometry. Problems Inform. Transmission 25, 265–275] which, under translation, effectively states that foldover (or even) designs are the only regular two-level factorial designs of resolution IV or more for n   runs and 5n/16?m?n/2$5n/16?m?n/2$ factors. This paper also contains other theorems including an alternative proof of Davydov and Tombak's result.     

Young people’s education biographies: family relationships,social capital and belonging

This paper examines complexities and interdependencies of key family relationships which anchor young people’s educational biographies. It is well recognised that young people’s education pathways in late modernity are strongly dependent on their ability to draw on the range of resources available, and that socio-economic status and family resources play a central role in this process. Less is known about how such relationships anchor young people’s education biographies. Drawing on theories of social capital and belonging in dialogue with qualitative interviews, and situated in studies of rural youth and education, this article considers how young people themselves talk and make decisions about their education in relation to complex family connections. These connections, contestations and negotiations between young people and central family members highlight how the late modern economy impacts on young people’s intimate relationships, and sheds light on the ongoing work of youth to resolve such tensions around their schooling in daily life.     

Log‐rank permutation tests for trend: saddlepoint p‐values and survival rate confidence intervals

Suppose p + 1 experimental groups correspond to increasing dose levels of a treatment and all groups are subject to right censoring. In such instances, permutation tests for trend can be performed based on statistics derived from the weighted log‐rank class. This article uses saddlepoint methods to determine the mid‐P‐values for such permutation tests for any test statistic in the weighted log‐rank class. Permutation simulations are replaced by analytical saddlepoint computations which provide extremely accurate mid‐P‐values that are exact for most practical purposes and almost always more accurate than normal approximations. The speed of mid‐P‐value computation allows for the inversion of such tests to determine confidence intervals for the percentage increase in mean (or median) survival time per unit increase in dosage. REPUTATION EFFECTS IN THE MARKET OF CERTIFIERS: EVIDENCE FROM THE AUDIT INDUSTRY

Certifiers verify unobserved product characteristics for buyers and thereby alleviate informational asymmetries and facilitate trade. When sellers pay for the certification, however, certifiers can be tempted to bias their opinion to favor sellers. Indeed, accounting scandals and inflated credit ratings suggest sellers may prefer to select dishonest certifiers. I test this proposition by estimating the effect of adverse quality signals on audit demand. Exploiting the natural experiment of Arthur Andersen's demise, I find that auditors with worse quality signals experience a fall in demand. This suggests that reputation effects are at work even in the presence of conflicts of interest. (JEL L15, L8, M4)     

Using social network analysis to complete literature reviews: a new systematic approach for independent researchers to detect and interpret prominent research programs within large collections of relevant literature

ABSTRACT

Literature reviews are required at early stages of a traditional research progression. Many systematic approaches help researchers identify relevant literature. However, there is far less support for interpreting large collections of references. Understanding the evolution of knowledge within a discipline requires an awareness of the collaborative networks from which significant advances originate. Unfortunately, this relational awareness is only acquired after years of professional experience. Therefore, early-career researchers are at a fundamental disadvantage when conducting literature reviews. Social Network Analysis (SNA) can make the interpretation of large collections of literature more manageable. This paper provides a method for generating a co-authorship network from reference lists. The partition of the co-authorship network into communities provides a reviewer with direction to organise literature into meaningful groups. The interpretation of seemingly disparate and entangled research programs is far more manageable when interpreting smaller collections of highly relevant literature.     

Setting (on) Fire: Reply to Discussions

The author begins by turning to a recent confrontation with four men who chanted homophobic slurs in his neighborhood. He uses this experience to state some of his ideas regarding violence and the setting. Visceral belonging is considered a problem insofar as it is tethered to a setting that constitutively excludes Blackness and queerness in structurally precise ways. Intervention into the setting is theorized as a temporal movement, and the fire of such intervention is couched as a tension of opening and a willingness to burn.
