This study evaluated whether a history of sexual abuse could differentiate negative health consequences among men who have sex with men (MSM; N = 148) enrolled in a risk counseling program. More than half (51.4%) reported an experience of sexual abuse. A history of sexual abuse was associated with increased psychological distress, increased rates of alcohol (AOR = 2.91; p <.01) and/or drug abuse (AOR = 2; p <.01) treatment, increased risk of housing instability (AOR = 2.13; p <.05), and increased risk for suicidality (AOR = 4.3; p <.001). Findings demonstrate that screening for sexual abuse may be useful in determining the service needs of high-risk MSM.  相似文献

This paper considers young people's perspectives of being parented and draws on a study that comprised secondary analysis of 112 qualitative interviews with teenagers who had either never offended or who had ceased to offend for at least a year. Young people's offending behaviour has traditionally been linked to parenting styles, but it is parenting practices that proved central to parental responses to revelations about their offspring's offending. During the interviews, desisters gave accounts of their upbringing and, in particular, the parenting they experienced in one critical situation, namely when their offending came to light. At this point, parents of desisters were reported to be more punitive, more emotional and less measured than they were customarily, and non‐offenders anticipated similar reactions from their parents if they were to offend in the future. The relevance of the findings for professional interventions, especially parenting programmes, and for social workers in child protection is discussed, and suggestions for further research is made.  相似文献

Humor can be used to ease tensions and create a safe place to dialogue across cultural differences in educational initiatives that seek to address social inequality. Little is written however on the appropriate use of humor within these educational programs. This article explores how group facilitators utilized specific types of humor to challenge ill-informed or intolerant statements while still maintaining a safe space to dialogue across difference. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal worldviews on the understanding and use of humor are contrasted to help inform group facilitators on the knowledge and skills needed to appropriately utilize humor within their work.  相似文献

Open adoption enables the adoptive parents to participate more fully in the adoption. It allows them to make decisions regarding the amount of openness they wish to have. By means of seminars, readings, and panels the adoptive parents learn more about adoption and birthparents. By experiencing openness, the adoptive parents come to know the birthparents as real people. The birthparents are no longer perceived as a threat. A close study of Eskimo divinities leads us to consider the possibility that they form a divine couple rather than a trinity. It seems also that, for various historical reasons, Eskimo tradition yields two presentations of the divine couple. An analysis of the best preserved version, perhaps the more recent of the two, might reveal the lower and the upper limits of the collectivity within which interaction ought to take place. The lower limit would be shown by the prohibition of incestual relationships and the upper, by the prohibition of marriage with a stranger. These considerations, the basis for hypotheses so far, are presented in a broader research perspective, that of the ties between magic and religion.  相似文献

The authors' objectives in this study were to describe the proportion of schools providing and the percentage of students with access to HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) education, treatment, and prevention services at 2-year and 4-year US colleges and universities. The authors mailed self-administered questionnaires to a stratified random sample (n = 910) of the 2,755 US schools with an enrollment of more than 500 students; 736 (81%) returned the survey. Four hundred seventy-four schools (60%) had a health center, representing 73% of students. Schools with a health center or housing for students were more likely to provide STD education; 52% of the schools made condoms available to students. Sixty percent of schools with health centers could test for both Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, but only 67% of these schools screened women for these infections. Although most schools provided some prevention education, access to prevention, testing, and education should be increased at schools where these services are possible but not available.  相似文献

The current study investigated whether students' classification of learning disabled (LD), learning disabled with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (LD/ADHD), or no classification (REG) was related to their ability to perceive nonverbal social cues. Participants in the study were 57 students between the ages of six and ten years identified as being LD, LD/ADHD, or REG. The Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy test (DANVA) and the Social Perception Behavior Rating Scale (SPBRS) were used to measure social perception. A MANOVA was computed for the four subtests of the DANVA (Facial Expressions, Postures, Gestures, and Paralanguage). A separate ANOVA was computed on the SPBRS. Significant differences were found for Facial Expressions and SPBRS scores. Follow-up analysis revealed that on the Facial Expressions subtest, students with LD demonstrated significantly more difficulty in the accurate perception of cues than the REG or LD/ ADHD groups. On the SPBRS, the LD/ADHD group was rated by teachers as significantly less socially perceptive than the REG group.  相似文献

This paper expands on the ideas presented by Barth’s article on hidden eating disorders. The topic of eating disorders continues to be an important focus of clinical work. Applying constructs related to the experience of shame, I explore the way that feelings of shame may impact an exploration of eating disorders by the patient and clinician.
