Essentially lexicographic aggregation

In the paper a new approach to lexicography is developed by which in the general framework of ordered blocks with a monotonic basis it is shown that a nontrivial ordering is translation-invariant if and only if it is essentially lexicographic of degree n. Here, the latter means that the ordering can be represented by an ordinary lexicographic ordering in n dimensions. As an application it is shown that a nontrivial social welfare ordering on Euclidean space possesses a useful invariance property (cardinality and non comparability) if and only if the ordering is essentially lexicographic of a strong kind in that it can be obtained from ordinary lexicography by permutation, cutting-off and order reversal with respect to components. This result generalizes the characterization of lexical individual dictatorship obtained by Gevers and d'Aspremont and it provides, within the social welfare approach, a strong version of Arrow's impossibility theorem by not invoking any Pareto principle at all.The author thanks K. CHANGE OR DIE. The competitiveness of business companies continuously demands innovative ideas and the willingness to implement these from executive managers. Thereby their own personal needs are often neglected. The consequences range from stress and overload up to burnout symptoms. To support an appropriate handling of the imposed work load by managers, a scientifically grounded stress-tolerance-training will be designed and evaluated. For the first time, certain outdoor exercises will be used specifically among conventional elements as active experiences of challenges outside the office can deeply strengthen the constructive handling of stressful situations.     

Video diaries: audio-visual research methods and the elusive body

The contemporary rise of body studies has led sociologists to take embodiment seriously, however, the issue of methodology in relation to the body remains largely under-explored. This article addresses the concern to capture the elusive body from a methodological perspective and discusses the video diary as a novel device for attending to bodily experience. The article considers how observation is redesigned through the video camera and describes the different ways in which bodily experience can be represented on screen. Using examples from video diaries made by participants in a multi-method study of the body, health and illness in everyday life, it shows how video diaries can contribute to an embodied sociology by making the body visibly, audibly and viscerally present.     

Fitting disposition codes to mobile phone surveys: experiences from studies in Finland, Slovenia and the USA

Summary.  Using mobile phones to conduct survey interviews has gathered momentum recently. However, using mobile telephones in surveys poses many new challenges. One important challenge involves properly classifying final case dispositions to understand response rates and non-response error and to implement responsive survey designs. Both purposes demand accurate assessments of the outcomes of individual call attempts. By looking at actual practices across three countries, we suggest how the disposition codes of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, which have been developed for telephone surveys, can be modified to fit mobile phones. Adding an international dimension to these standard definitions will improve survey methods by making systematic comparisons across different contexts possible.
