Meeting Your Ghosts

This paper reports the perceptions of a group of social work students who undertook an introductory Family Therapy course which had a focus on families of origin. Perceptions of family of origin changed for 38 family therapy students who responded to pre and post course questionnaires. Their responses support the author's experience of the need to understand the source of emotional reactions arising within the therapist during sessions.     

Reciprocal nature of parent-infant interaction: implications for child maltreatment.

Exploration of the infant's role in creating a potentially abusive situation suggests a different orientation for child maltreatment programs.     

Knowledge and Use of Birth Control in Barbados

Based on material collected in Barbados in 1964, this paper examines knowledge and use of birth control in terms of three types of family union-married, common law, and visiting. Analysis of knowledge of birth control is dealt with for the sample at large, for educational attainment, and for the average number of methods known by each woman. The relative importance of the different methods known is also treated by family type and education.The extent to which women in the sample make use of birth control is discussed from four aspects. First, the growing use of the different methods among younger-age cohorts is made evident from tabulations of methods-last-used. Second, information on the agencies and individuals recommending the use of different contraceptives emphasizes the degree to which the partner's influence is responsible for resort to birth control. Third, the proportions of users in religious groups show that religion is not a barrier to the use of any method. Fourth, the material is treated from the standpoint of age cohorts, since there is, in many cases, a vagueness as to the age at which use began, although women are able to identify the inter-pregnancy period when use began.     

Summary statistics on indenture and associated migration affecting the West Indies, 1834-1918

Abstract This paper presents summary statistics of immigration into the West Indies, under indenture or government sponsorship, during the period 1834-1918. The sources reveal a few discrepancies, but are sufficiently consistent to permit the construction of a series for each of the ethnic groups introduced. Most of the problems involved in constructing these series centre around the fact that a variety of sources have to be utilised. Immigration figures of East Indians, Portuguese, Chinese, Europeans and others into the several West Indian colonies have been prepared for each calendar year or season, but to conserve space are presented here in summary form. In the case of African immigration it is possible to give their country of origin. The only group of immigrants who were involved in return movements of any consequence are the East Indians.
