Guest Editors' Introduction

This discourse analysis explores traditional and feminist articulations of rape in online mediated discourse regarding the sexual attack on CBS journalist Lara Logan in Egypt in February 2011. Examination of 175 stories and links in the top ten news blogs in the United States showed that the blogosphere contested traditional rape narratives that blamed Logan for the attack and conceptualized rape through a more varied means. In doing so, bloggers engaged in a struggle for meaning, and mainstreamed feminist understandings of sexual violence within the online public space.

仲裁作为现代多元化纠纷解决机制中的重要方式,是解决当事人争议的有效手段。争议事项是否具有可仲裁性,是仲裁法理论中必须解决的首要问题。它在很大的程度上决定了仲裁协议的效力,仲裁庭的仲裁管辖权和仲裁裁决的承认与执行等重大权利和经济利益。笔者试图结合我国《仲裁法》及解决涉外经济贸易争议的实践,提出这在理论上和实务中均有意义的命题,以窥探国际商事仲裁的发展趋势,同时也有利于我们更清楚地认识和更充分地利用国际商事仲裁这一争议解决方式。     

Psychotherapeutic approaches to the cancer patient

Three basic therapeutic approaches applicable to the majority of cancer patients are outlined and illustrated with case vignettes. They are: (1) Initial catharsis and validation of feelings, (2) Restoring communication impaired by denial, and (3) Understanding the psychological meaning of the illness. Using this framework, the therapist's professional skills may be organized toward specific interventions, thereby stabilizing the associated ego functions against the regression often induced by the anxieties mobilized by working with seriously ill patients.     

Assessing the Impact of Social Factors on the Mental Health of Chinese at Risk Adolescents in Hong Kong

E-mail: cdavis3eutk.edu Summary The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship offamily, peer and school factors on the mental health of Chinesemale and female at risk adolescents and secondary school studentsin Hong Kong. Questionnaire surveys based on various standardizedassessment scales were conducted with 398 (183 female and 215male) Chinese at risk adolescents and 320 (160 female and 160male) Chinese secondary school students between 12 and 18 yearsof age in Hong Kong. Compared to secondary school students,at risk adolescents had poorer relations with parents, morenegative family and peer influence, a more negative school environment,and poorer social functioning. Findings also revealed that femaleparticipants had more somatic symptoms, anxiety, and depressioncompared to males. The importance of environmental factors onthe mental health of Chinese adolescents supports previous researchin Western countries. Implications for intervention and preventionwere discussed from a cross-cultural perspective.     

Religious and Spiritual Dimensions of the Vietnamese Dementia Caregiving Experience

This paper focuses on the role of religion and spirituality in dementia caregiving among Vietnamese refugee families. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with nine Vietnamese caregivers of persons with dementia, then tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for emergent themes. Caregivers related their spirituality/religion to three aspects of caregiving: (1) their own suffering, (2) their motivations for providing care, and (3) their understanding of the nature of the illness. Key terms or idioms were used to articulate spiritual/religious dimensions of the caregivers' experience, which included sacrifice, compassion, karma, blessings, grace and peace of mind. In their narratives, the caregivers often combined multiple strands of different religions and/or spiritualities: Animism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Catholicism. Case studies are presented to illustrate the relationship between religion/spirituality and the domains of caregiving. These findings have relevance for psychotherapeutic interventions with ethnically diverse populations.     

Selection of Binary Variables and Classification by Boosting

We adopt boosting for classification and selection of high-dimensional binary variables for which classical methods based on normality and non singular sample dispersion are inapplicable. Boosting seems particularly well suited for binary variables. We present three methods of which two combine boosting with the relatively classical variable selection methods developed in Wilbur et al. (2002 Wilbur , J. D. , Ghosh , J. K. , Nakatsu , C. Our primary interest is variable selection in classification with small misclassification error being used as validation of proposed method for variable selection. Professional boundaries. A matter of therapeutic integrity

1. Establishing and maintaining boundaries creates a relational space in which the patient and nurse are able to explore treatment issues within the safety of the therapeutic relationship. 2. The therapeutic relationship in founded on the basis of trust, respect, and appropriate use of power. Understanding the power differential within the nurse patient relationship is critical to the establishment and maintenance of professional boundaries. 3. Therapeutic integrity is rooted in knowledge, experience, and clinical judgment. As such, there are not always clearly demarcated answers to the tough questions posed by the dilemmas in practice. 4. Questions arising from practice challenge nurses to reflect on the meaning of boundaries in their personal and professional lives.
