Homophily—the tendency individuals have to associate with similar‐others—is a powerful determinant of social networks. Yet research to date does not allow us to determine which dimension, e.g., ethnic, religious, gender, age, or class similarity, drives association. Tests demonstrating homophily are flawed by restricting the range of dimensions in the choice set. We introduce an experimental game in which we exogenously expose subjects to diverse partners to determine which dimension dominates. We find that in a socio‐demographically diverse district of Paris, despite expectations of secularization, religious similarity significantly predicts homophily. The French old age security system was constructed progressively following the end of the Second World War in response to the pressing problem of old age poverty. In 1945 less than 40% of old people (4.5 million in total) had a pension. This was despite the existence of some pension systems dating back to the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Monetary depreciation also meant that the pensions of those who enjoyed such benefits were very low. Historical factors explain the current pension system's organization and institutional division favouring pay-as-you-go schemes. While the French pension system has been largely successful in eliminating old age poverty, it today faces new challenges and constraints that make reform necessary. The debate as how best to reform the pension system is a long and winding one. Change is slow and incremental. Ideological, social and cultural factors and their interrelations help explain the difficulties in effecting reforms. 相似文献

This article focuses upon the ways in which Deaf and hard of hearing people are excluded from participation in society. In particular, the focus is upon the ordinary expectations that members of society have in terms of participating as citizens and performing socially sanctioned, adult roles. The roles of 'citizen', 'employee', 'parent' and 'patient' are discussed. The data illustrate how the organisation and delivery of services can undermine, rather than facilitate, the performance of these roles. Despite policy emphasis on social inclusion, current services and legislation fail to provide a firm basis for the full participation of Deaf and hard of hearing people in British society. 相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that mother–child warmth and responsiveness would moderate the link between young children's theory of mind skills and self‐worth. Participants included 125 same‐sex pairs of 3.5 year‐old twins and their mothers. A battery of tests was individually administered to measure the children's theory of mind skills and verbal intelligence, and their self‐reported self‐worth was assessed using a puppet interview. Following visits to the families' homes, the observers completed ratings of warm responsive mother–child behavior based on videotaped unstructured and structured observations. As expected, warm responsive behavior moderated the relation between their theory of mind and the child's self‐worth. Their theory of mind was positively associated with self‐worth in warm responsive mother–child dyads, and there was weaker evidence that their theory of mind may be negatively associated with self‐worth in less warm, unresponsive mother–child dyads. 相似文献

In drawing, psychological mood can be denoted in a direct way (i.e., “literally”) through facial expression cues (e.g., a
frowning face denotes sadness in a direct way), but it can also be connoted in an indirect way (i.e., “non-literally”) through
figurative or non-figurative cues. This study examines how child and adult drawers selectively use literal and non-literal
expressive strategies in accordance with the nature of the topic being depicted. In a between-subject design, 120 participants
produced drawings of either a person or a house, in one of three versions: baseline, happy, and sad. The results indicated
that drawers preferentially used literal expressive strategies for the person and non-literal strategies for the house. There
was an increasing tendency between 7 and 11 years of age to express the drawn person’s mood non-literally in addition to literally.
The positive correlation obtained between representational and expressive drawing ability suggests that enrichment of drawers’
graphic repertoire enhances their ability to draw expressively. Implications for clinical and educational practitioners are

The relationship between premarital cohabitation and marital dysfunction was examined with a total sample of 1,425 spouses in two U.S. marriage cohorts: those married between 1964 and 1980 (when cohabitation was less common) and those married between 1981 and 1997 (when cohabitation was more common). Spouses in both cohorts who cohabited prior to marriage reported poorer marital quality and greater marital instability. When selection factors for cohabitation and subsequent marital instability were included in the statistical model, cohabitors in both cohorts continued to exhibit poorer marital quality and greater marital instability. These findings lend stronger support to an experience of cohabitation perspective than to a selection perspective as an explanation for why couples who cohabit before marriage tend to have more troubled relationships. 相似文献
