The Distribution of Sums of I.I.D. Pareto Random Variables with Arbitrary Shape Parameter

Laplace transforms are used to derive an exact expression for the cdf of the sum of n i.i.d. Pareto random variables with common pdf f(x) = (α/β)(1 + x/β)^?α?1 for x > 0, where α > 0 and is not an integer, and β > 0. An attractive feature of this expression is that it involves an integral of non oscillating real-valued functions on the positive real line. Examples of values of cdfs are provided and are compared to those determined via simulations.     

Strangers of the north: South Asians,cricket and the culture of ‘Yorkshireness’

As a county, Yorkshire is a ‘cultural region’: an imagined space, where culture is constructed, refined and articulated by a set of discursive relationships between local populations and a whole range of cultural forms. In this context however, culture is conceived as something which belongs to, and is only accessible by, certain groups of people. Our focus in this article is on the culture of Yorkshire cricket. Historically, Yorkshire cricket has been linked with White male privilege and some studies have shown that people within Yorkshire take a degree of pride in this. Consequently, the county and its cricket club have faced frequent accusations from minority ethnic communities of inveterate and institutionalised racism. Drawing upon Bauman’s notion of ‘liquid modernity’, we argue that the processes of deregulation and individualisation championed by New Right policies have led to a divorce between power and politics, a cornerstone of the old solid modern world. This in turn has led to an erosion of the state, causing individuals to navigate turbulent life projects which are consistently haunted by the spectres of fear and insecurity. Such an environment has caused cricket to be pushed further behind gated social spaces, in an attempt to maintain a semblance of ‘community’.     

Decision-making in Social Work Field Education: A “Good Enough” Framework

This qualitative study was designed to explore decision-making processes used by directors of field education in social work programs in the USA. It is a follow-up to previous research showing the dilemmas that field directors face [specifics deleted to maintain the integrity of the review process]. We asked 22 field directors to explain how they would handle different dilemmas designed to simulate the kinds of issues that typically arise in field education. Analyses revealed that field directors use a four-dimensional decision-making process to address competing demands, employing a ‘good enough’ framework. The four dimensions include student learning, professional ethics, agency relationships, and administrative expectations.     

Comparing UK and Other Western Countries' Health Expenditure,Relative Poverty and Child Mortality: Are British Children Doubly Disadvantaged?

We examined the UK's effectiveness in reducing Child Mortality with 20 other Western countries, in the context of their national health expenditures, and, relative poverty — measured by ‘Income Inequality’ the gap between top and bottom 20 per cent of income. W.H.O. Child (0–14) Mortality Rates (CMR) and GDP Expenditure on Health (% GDPHE) were examined and a cost‐effectiveness ratio calculated, which is the reduced CMR over the period divided by average GDPHE. The highest average % GDPHE was USA at 13.2 per cent; the UK's 7.3 per cent was equal lowest. The widest Income Inequality was USA 8.5 times; the UK at 7.2 was third widest. The highest CMR was the USA 2436 per million (pm), the UK's 1630 pm, although representing a fall of 62 per cent was fourth highest. However, UK cost‐effectiveness ratio (1: 350) was eighth best of 21 countries. Only Income Inequality correlated significantly with CMR. UK CMR fell significantly more than five countries but ten others declined more. If UK deaths had been at the average of the 17 countries with lower CMR, there would have been 1827 fewer deaths. British children's poverty and health expenditure means they and their services are doubly disadvantaged although the NHS relatively achieved more with comparatively less.     

Qualitative Research: Valuable or Irrelevant?

This paper evaluates qualitative research methods in relation to the emancipatory research model. It identifies the main reasons why researchers opt for qualitative research, describes the principal data collection techniques used by them, and discusses some of the problems associated with these procedures. Drawing on insights gained from doing qualitative research in day centres for disabled young adults, I argue that these methodologies are fundamental to the emancipatory research paradigm; but their relevance can only be determined by researchers' willingness to challenge the institutions which control disability research production.     

Strategic thinking with computers

The author describes the development of a system of cognitive mapping as a strategic management tool. Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA) has been used extensively by project teams working on strategic issues. A typical programme is described and the procedure is based on attention to the ownership of data as the basic material, and on the design of strategy workshops using the owned data. This appendix describes the use of the system in practice and the benefits and drawback perceived in running the strategy workshop.     

Managing organizational change—A strategic approach

Developing the competence, commitment and capacity for change of people is a vital element in the creation and maintenance of competitive advantage and should be an integral part of the strategic equations and business plans of any firm. This theme, examples of ‘good’ practice, and strategies to implement a strategic approach to people have been explained and developed in a brief case ‘action pack’ produce by the authors of this article for the MSC and NEDO. Key factors identified in the development of the three ‘C’s are effective leadership, involvement and good employee communications, stress on performance management, appropriate reward systems and training and development.     

Perceptions of Bilinguals

An important argument has been advanced by Francois Grosjean that there are two views of bilinguals. First, there is a fractional, two monolinguals in one person, view of bilinguals. There is secondly a holistic view which argues that the bilingual is not the sum of two complete or incomplete monolinguals, but has an unique and special linguistic profile. These two viewpoints will be discussed in this paper and illustrated in terms of attitudes and self identity.     

The energy market and energy planning

The purpose of this paper is to apply economic analysis to two important international energy problems. One is the short-and medium-term prospects for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The second is the much longer run, though related matter of how the transition from presently used energy sources to those we may use in the future can be accomplished.
