CORRELATIONS AND CHARACTERIZATIONS OF THE UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION

Two characterizations of the uniform distribution on a suitable compact space are proved. These characterizations are applied to a number of particular examples of which the most interesting is the following: if X , Y and Z are independent n-vectors whose components are independent and identically distributed within a vector, then the pairwise independence of the product moment correlation coefficients between X , Y and Z implies that these vectors are normally distributed.     

Group psychotherapy with pathological gamblers

This paper reviews some of the group therapy techniques utilized in the authors' work with pathological gamblers. These conceptual tools ranged from rational-emotive psychotherapy to Zen philosophy which provided a background and foundation for working with pathological gamblers. Many therapeutic and antitherapeutic beliefs and behaviors of gamblers are discussed including narcissism, manipulative behavior, and rejection of Gamblers Anonymous. Each technique, behavior or belief discussed is explained in terms of how each affects the group process and how each is managed in group therapy.This paper represents a discourse on the group treatment of pathological gamblers primarily from the experiences of Julian Ingersoll Taber, Ph.D. who was the coordinator of the Gambling Treatment Program at the Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center for seven years. Dr. Taber is currently Chief of the Addictive Disorders Treatment Program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Reno, Nevada. Martin Paul Chaplin, Ph.D., who is specializing in the treatment of addiction, assisted in the theoretical and editorial aspects of this article. He worked under the aegis of Dr. Taber as an intern at the Gambling Treatment Program and currently has a position at Community Mental Health Services of Medina in Ohio.     

Organizational metamorphosis: A study of eighteen nonprofit mergers,acquisitions, and consolidations

This article reviews the literature on nonprofit mergers and presents a study of eighteen nonprofit merger, acquisition, or consolidation transactions. The findings underscore financial reasons as the chief motivation for mergers and cite the inability of small agencies to compete as an important contributing factor. Morale and productivity declined when staff had serious concerns about their future. Good leadership and honest and open communication were considered vital to ensuring a smooth merger process.     

Modifications of the Mack-Wolfe umbrella tests for a generalized Behrens-Fisher problem

We are concerned with testing procedures for umbrella alternatives in the k-sample location problem without making the assumption that the underlying populations have the same shape. Modifications of the Mack-Wolfe tests are proposed for the cases when the peak of the umbrella is known or unknown. The proposed procedures are exactly distribution-free when the continuous populations have the same shape. The modified test for peak-known umbrella alternatives remains asymptotically distribution-free when the continuous populations are symmetric, but not necessarily with the same shape.     

On a statistical approach to choice under uncertainty

This article is concerned with criteria of choice under uncertainty which are based on long sequences of independent experiments. To state a rule of comparison for such sequences, we first specify it for sequences of certain numbers (say, of certain incomes). Eventually, the problem is reduced to a connection between preferences on sequences ofcertain numbers and thoseon probability distributions. We take into consideration a notion of statistically stable criteria for which choice based on a single random experiment does not disagree with that based on a “sufficiently long” sequence of independent replicas of the same experiment. The main aim of the article is to establish conditions under which a statistically stable criterion exists and to give its explicit representation.     

Circadian rhythms and bright light: Recommendations for shift work

This paper starts with a brief review of the basic principles of human circadian rhythms relevant to understanding the problem of shift work. It then presents a more detailed critical review of the recent bright light literature, with an emphasis on methodological shortcomings, alternative interpretations, and areas that need further research. Evidence is presented which suggests that either a light-dark cycle (which includes bright light) or a sleep-wake schedule can act as a zeitgeber for human circadian rhythms. Current human phase response curves to bright light are reviewed. Light-work-sleep schedules are presented which have been designed to eliminate the physiologically based harmful consequences of shift work. These schedules include both bright light and sleep-wake schedule zeitgebers. Other practical applications of bright light treatment are mentioned.     

Helping the medicine go down. Nurses' and patients' perceptions about medication compliance

The issue of medication compliance is a multidimensional phenomenon that rests not only with the patient, but also with the interactions of caregivers. Study results revealed that nurses and patients generally perceive estimated frequency of medication compliance to be similar, although increased length of time as a psychiatric nurse was associated with nurses perceiving patients as being less compliant. Reasons given by patients and nurses for medication noncompliance differed. Patients' responses were characterized by being more concrete and varied in nature than those of the nurse.
