Elliptically contoured model and factorization of wllks1 A

In a series of papers, Kshirsagar (1964, 1971) and McHenry and Kshirsagar (1977), factorize Wilks' A into a number of factors and find the independent null multivariate beta densities of these factors. These factors are the likelihood ratio test criteria for testing the goodness of fit of certain assigned discriminant functions or canonical variables either in the space of independent or dependent variables. Essentially the factors of Wilks' A are the factors of certain multivariate beta distributed matrix or its determinant. The Bartlett decomposition of the underlying multivariate beta distribution into independent factors determines the distribution of these factors. The present paper generalizes Kshirsagar's (1971) normal theory to the elliptically contoured model, and shows that his results are null robust for the elliptically contoured model.     

Improved deviance goodness of fit statistics for a gamma regression model

A gamma regression model with an exponential link function for the means Is considered. Moment properties of the deviance statistics based on maximum likelihood and weighted least squares fits are used to define modified deviance statistics which provide alternative global goodness of fit tests. The null distribution properties of the deviances and modified deviances are compared with those of the approximating chi-square distribution and It is shown that the use of the modified deviances gives much better control over the significance levels of the tests.     

Context Matters: Explaining How and Why Mobilizing Context Influences Motivational Dynamics

The emphasis in the social-psychological collective action literature is on why individuals take part in collective action; however, it does not elaborate on how different mobilizing contexts may appeal to distinct motivational dynamics to participate. The present study connects the microlevel of motivational dynamics of individual protesters with the mesolevel of social movement characteristics. To do so a field study was conducted. Protesters were surveyed in the act of protesting in two different demonstrations in two different town squares simultaneously organized by two social movements at exactly the same time against the same budget cuts proposed by the same government. But with one fundamental difference, the movements emphasized different aspects of the policies proposed by the government. This most similar systems design created a unique natural experiment, which enabled the authors to examine whether the motivational dynamics of individual protesters are moderated by the social movement context. Previous research suggested an instrumental path to collective action, and the authors added an ideology path. The authors expected and found that power-oriented collective action appeals to instrumental motives and efficacy and that value-oriented collective action appeals to ideological motives, and, finally, that efficacy mediates on instrumental motives and motivational strength, but only so in power-oriented action.

This paper looks at a clinical case in which a patient who engaged in sexual risk taking became infected with HIV in the course of his analysis. Health concerns and social stigma make contraction of HIV emotionally fraught for those infected and those close to them. Psychoanalysts working with people in this situation may find it difficult to sort through their own and their patients' reactions, including feelings of guilt and responsibility. The paper describes the complex developmental and clinical context of one such case and shows how psychoanalytic inquiry rooted in the patient's subjective world provided a context in which the meanings of his seroconversion could be understood. This understanding allowed for emotional changes that showed promise for the patient's capacity for continued self-care.     

Trade-off between quoted lead time and price

In a make-to-order environment, lead time and price can play a crucial role in determining the financial success of a firm. Their importance increases when demand is sensitive to the quoted lead time and price. A model is presented which uses the quoted lead time and price as a mechanism to determine the optimal demand level. The relationships between the model parameters and their impacts on the firm's profit is also analysed. In addition, the effect of the number of job requests, and the mean processing time are examined. Based on the results presented in this paper, there is clear indication that the firm's profit is sensitive to the inventory holding rate, and that the inventory holding cost component is redundant in the presence of a tardiness cost component.
