As it is widely acclaimed, the “Web 2.0” offers many opportunities for qualitative research. While qualitative online research is mainly associated with ethnographic approaches, this article is concerned with online focus groups. In particular, the new opportunities and challenges presented by conducting focus groups via message boards will be discussed. As a starting point, the basic differences between face-to-face and several online focus groups are outlined. The bulk of this article focuses on three distinctive features of message board focus groups and their methodological consequences. These are the written form and the lack of non-verbal cues, the asynchronous mode of communication and the technique of multithreading. Finally, it is shown that focus groups via message boards are rather to be treated as an alternative approach to social reality than as a variant of conventional focus groups. They generate data of a particular type which can be especially valuable for narrative and discursive approaches. 相似文献

In this paper we explore the relationship between English language proficiency and earnings in South Africa, using new data from the first wave of the National Income Dynamics panel survey of 2008. Much of the literature on this topic has studied the impact on earnings of host country language acquisition among minority groups of immigrants to developed countries. In our study we analyse the returns to language skills in a developing country context where the dominant language of business, government and education is that of the former colony, although not more than one percent of the African majority population group speaks English as their home language. Our findings suggest large returns among Africans to reading and writing English very well, and particularly among those who have a tertiary education. We also briefly consider the implications of these results for language and education policy in South Africa in the post-apartheid period. 相似文献

This study analyses the influence of chronic occupational stress on cardiovascular reactivity (heart rate [HR] and blood pressure [BP] elevation from baseline to maximal challenge) during a standard mental stress test (modified version of the STROOP colour word interference test). The test was applied to a sample of 190 healthy male blue-collar workers at the end of a regular working day. Our research hypothesis was based on the assumption that sustained autonomic activation due to chronic occupational stress may reduce cardiovascular responsiveness to challenge: workers defined by high level of chronic occupational stress exhibited lower maximal HR and BP elevations under challenge as compared to workers with low levels of stress. Three distinct indicators of occupational stress were derived from structured interviews: 'cumulative workload', 'worsening of job conditions', and 'high demand and low job security'. Statistical analysis, using ANOVA, showed that all main effects of chronic stress were in the expected direction (6 of 9 effects were statistically significant at the 0'05 level). These effects remained stable after adjusting for age, hypertensive status, physiological baseline level, cigarette smoking, test performance, and individual style of coping. In summary, cardiovascular reactivity under experimental challenge is modulated by an individual's experience of chronic occupational stress. 相似文献

The acquirement of and possessing competencies is a fundamental requirement to every executive. Micro-political competence constitutes uncharted waters. Therefore in the research project “Micro-politics and women’s career advancement competence” were, with regard to the category gender, pursued the question, whether micro-political competence are acquirable with the help of coaching, and whether it is beneficial for women’s career advancement. The outcome is the Micro-political Competence Model (MCM), which is the main topic of this paper. After an introduction in the study, the MKM is to be described theoretically and the four competence classes of Micro-political Competence will be defined. The paper tests the hypothesis that private transfers can be explained by the existence of self-enforcing family constitutions
prescribing the minimum level at which a person in middle life should support her young children and elderly parents. The
test is based on the effect of a binding credit ration on the probability of making a money transfer, which can be positive
only in the presence of family constitutions. Allowing for the possible endogeneity of the credit ration, we find that rationing
has a positive effect on the probability of giving money if the potential giver is under the age of retirement, but no significant
effect if the person is already retired. This appears to reject the hypothesis that transfer behavior is the outcome of unfettered
individual optimization on the part of either altruistic or exchange motivated agents, but not the one that individuals optimize
subject to a self-enforcing family constitution. The policy implications are briefly discussed.

AbstractPsychological violence against women in intimate relations is one of the most widespread and hidden ways of limiting their human rights. Nowadays different ideologies, including sexism and feminism, can contribute to (dis)regard this phenomenon. This study focuses on the relationship between ambivalent sexism (in its hostile and benevolent dimensions) and feminism (in the egalitarian ideology dimension) with the identification of psychological violence and the perception of invulnerability to the intimate partner violence in women. The mediator role of the myths about gender-based violence in these relationships is analysed. Participants were 91 women, with heterogeneous socio-demographic characteristics. Results showed benevolent sexism as a risk factor and egalitarian feminism ideology as a protector factor in the process of the perception of psychological violence. The egalitarian feminism ideology also appears as the main predictor of the perception of invulnerability to abuse. This relationship is mediated by the degree of adhesion to the myths about gender-based violence. These findings reinforce the importance of the attitudinal and ideological factors in the perception of gender-based violence. 相似文献

Abstract This paper applies the notion of community resiliency to rural and regional Queensland and explores the role of human services and practitioners in developing this resiliency. Communities can be considered as being ‘resilient’ when they respond to crises in ways that strengthen communal bonds, resources and the community's capacity to cope. Increasingly, community resiliency has become the focus of international research (Kulig and Brown 1996; 1997), In our work, we have been exploring alliance-building between practitioners and their communities in several research projects in rural and regional Queensland. We argue that these alliances contribute significantly to the building of resiliency and are a potential site for further work in strengthening and sustaining rural communities. The implications of community resiliency for social work practice are discussed. 相似文献
