Psychotherapy of a preschool cancer survivor: Promoting mastery and understanding

The prolonged and invasive treatment common to cancer therapy protocols may lead to precocious defenses which impede the future development of preschool-aged cancer survivors. Focal play therapy offers the young cancer survivor a chance to understand and master the cancer experience. At present there are no accounts in the literature of the psychotherapy of young cancer survivors. This paper presents a detailed account of the therapy of a preschooler who survived a brain tumor, emphasizing the child's perspective on the cancer experience and an intervention approach which stresses mastery of developmental impasses, rather than psychopathology.     

INTEGRATING TRANSPORT,LAND USE PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENT POLICY

Various recent policy documents stress the need for the integration of sectoral policies. In practice, policy-makers recognize the need for policy-integration but often do not have a complete picture of what it entails or how to put theory into practice. This paper reports on a research project that examines attitudes and approaches to integrating transport, land use and environment policies in three local authority case studies in Denmark, Germany and England.1 1. The institutional and political factors covered in this paper include the division of roles and responsibilities within an organisation, the nature of inter-departmental and inter-agency relationships, the diversity of professional skills and education of the workforce, and the role of political and public support.     

Identifying male college students' perceived health needs, barriers to seeking help, and recommendations to help men adopt healthier lifestyles

Seven focus groups at a university campus were formed to identify college men's health concerns, barriers to seeking help, and recommendations to help college men adopt healthier lifestyles. Content analysis was used to identify and organize primary patterns in the focus-group data. Results of the study revealed that the college men were aware that they had important health needs but took little action to address them. The participants identified both physical and emotional health concerns. Alcohol and substance abuse were rated as the most important issues for men. The greatest barrier to seeking services was the men's socialization to be independent and conceal vulnerability. The most frequently mentioned suggestions for helping men adopt healthier lifestyles were offering health classes, providing health information call-in service, and developing a men's center. Implications of the results are discussed.     

Dynamic aspects of line balancing

The article explores the dynamic nature of line balancing. Models are developed to help management with the problem of manning a line to produce a specified output. The models quantify the fluctuations in both excess inventories and the number of operators required.     

Strategic planning in the Thomas Cook group

Until Midland Bank took control of Thomas Cook in 1972 there were only rudimentary accounts in the Group and no systematic attempt to budget its operations. An immediate priority was to establish an effective finance function and the first planning activities of the Group were centred in this area. At the beginning of the annual planning cycle a Group Strategic Conference at Board level and a Group Planning Conference determine strategies and many territories follow this latter meeting with their own regional conference to discuss Plans, which are finalized and consolidated by computer into the Group Plan, to be ready for the start of the financial year.     

Priority dispatching rules in job shops with assembly operations and random delays

The article reports the results of an experimental investigation into priority dispatching rules for a job shop with assembly operations. A job is made up of several parts, where parts are individual entities requiring several operations in different machine centres. The study was directed towards rules which attempt to co-ordinate the completion time of parts required in the same job. This mainly involves rules that utilise job status information such as operation float, number of parts completed, and number of operations remaining on each part. Results indicate that job status information improves most of the measures of performance used.     

A Psychometric Evaluation of the Facial Action Coding System for Assessing Spontaneous Expression

The Facial Action Coding System (FACS) (Ekman & Friesen, 1978) is a comprehensive and widely used method of objectively describing facial activity. Little is known, however, about inter-observer reliability in coding the occurrence, intensity, and timing of individual FACS action units. The present study evaluated the reliability of these measures. Observational data came from three independent laboratory studies designed to elicit a wide range of spontaneous expressions of emotion. Emotion challenges included olfactory stimulation, social stress, and cues related to nicotine craving. Facial behavior was video-recorded and independently scored by two FACS-certified coders. Overall, we found good to excellent reliability for the occurrence, intensity, and timing of individual action units and for corresponding measures of more global emotion-specified combinations.     

Felt tip pens and school councils: children's participation rights in four English schools

The United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child has created practical challenges for nation states and institutions particularly in relation to children's rights to participation. The limited research that is available has tended to use survey methodology; qualitative accounts of children's daily lives are rare. The present study investigated the nature of children's participation in their education in two primary and two secondary schools; in particular the right to express views freely in all matters affecting the child. The study found that children's opportunities to express their views were extremely limited even when school councils were in place. It is concluded that the goal of active citizenship espoused by recent national curriculum developments will remain illusive unless educational practice changes to a focus on school processes rather than products.
