Winning the interviewing game

Those who don't "interview well" are not likely to receive the job offer, despite their qualifications. A job interview is actually a fierce competitive activity that offers only two grades: an A or F. By nature, physicians are competitive; they like to win. Infrequent interviewees are prone to making easily corrected mistakes, such as showing no enthusiasm or having poor eye contact. The key for interviewing success is preparation--doing research, developing a personal statement, and role-playing practice interviews. View the interview as a sales call whose bottom-line goal is to achieve an offer, or at least to let you leave with the option to return for future discussions.     

Planning and health care—The approach in a reorganized NHS

From April 1974, National Health Service authorities have been merged to provide integrated and comprehensive services. The reorganization policies place considerable emphasis on the need for management and planning but planning for health services is not well developed. Ambiguous operational objectives and obscured criteria for effectiveness are not the most promising basis for planning. Nevertheless, a commendable beginning is to be made on planning comprehensively through a systematic annual review of Government health service policies and planning and programming procedures for health authorities. The outlines of the system are described and the prospects for success and further development are considered.     

Real executives make career moves. Will you?

Not all physician executives have accepted the career move as a key part of executive life. They prefer to stay put and they often do just that. While clinicians may have the luxury of choosing a single geographic location and remaining there through retirement, physician executives often have to reorder their priorities to give the position greatest significance in career decision-making. Spouses and families need to be educated to the new reality of executive life--sometimes, to support an important career opportunity, a move is required. Physician executives unwilling to make career moves limit their career potential.     

THE USE OF INTERACTIVE VIDEO TO DEMONSTRATE DIFFERENTIAL APPROACHES TO MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY

This article outlines the development of an interactive video system designed to demonstrate differential approaches to family therapy using identical therapy situations. The primary purpose of the project is to resolve some of the confusion many novice family therapists experience while being exposed to the numerous family therapy approaches. Technical aspects of the interactive video system are also outlined.     

A Characterization of a Matric-Variate Exponential Distribution

Suppose S is a positive definite m x m random matrix and S> Ω denotes the event that S—Ω is positive definite, Ω being a constant positive definite matrix. Under very mild regularity conditions, we show that the constraint Pr(S>Ω₁+Ω₂ | S>Ω₂) = Pr(S>Ω₁) implies that S has a Wishart distribution on m+ 1 degrees of freedom.     

Industrialization and Social Stratification*

This paper reviews the current state of knowledge about the effects of industrialization upon systems of social stratification. Taking societies as the unit of observation, we consider the relationships between level of industrialization and (1) the distribution of status characteristics in the population (the structure of stratification); (2) the pattern of interrelations among status characteristics (the process of stratification); and (3) the form of linkages between status characteristics and other aspects of social behavior (the consequences of stratification). A set of propositions is specified, a few of which are empirically well established but most of which yet require empirical testing.
