We investigate trade‐offs among markups, service quality, and product attributes across customer, Internet retailer, and wholesaler echelons. Research has documented the reality of retail price dispersion, but little is known about how retail markups, in particular, are related to service quality and product attributes. For example, do Internet retailers deliver superior service in return for high markups? Do product characteristics affect the relationship between service and markups for retailers? To examine these issues, we first developed a model of Internet retail profitability that separates revenues and costs related to sales from other profit sources. This framework allowed us to position our work alongside the extant literature about Internet retailing. Moreover, it led us to synthesize service quality dimensions found in Internet retailing studies. We subsequently developed a critical‐event study based on the profit model and the synthesis of service quality dimensions to delineate service aspects that retailers should emphasize to address buyers' utility. Finally, we collected data from Internet purchases across retailers to isolate markup‐service quality trade‐offs along our delineated service aspects. We find that high markups are associated with superior performance across service quality dimensions. Furthermore, this trade‐off becomes more acutely defined when products with variable popularity are transacted.  相似文献

We describe two sequential sampling procedures for Bernoulli subset selection which were shown to exhibit desirable behavior for large-sample problems. These procedures have identical performance characteristics in terms of the number of observations taken from any one of the populations under investigation, but one of the procedures employs one-at-a-time sampling while theother allows observations to be taken in blocks during early stages of experimentation. In this paper, a simulation study of their behavior for small-sample cases (n > 25) reveals that they canresult in a savings (sometimes substantial) in the expected total number of observations requiredto terminate the experiment as compared to single-stage procedures. Hence they may be quite usefulto a practitioner for screening purposes when sampling is limited.  相似文献

Methods for electronically linking suppliers and retailers (Electronic data interchange systems also known as EDI) have become commonplace. This study develops a methodology for assessing the value provided by an EDI system. The importance of implementation in generating value through EDI is illustrated through the use of a case study of a major retailer implementing an EDI system using the methodology. The case study also shows that EDI systems are likely to be most effective for product categories with unpredictable sales patterns and demonstrates how other technologies (e.g. flexible manufacturing capabilities) can be leveraged to increase the value of EDI.  相似文献

Renal disease affects 11% of people in the United States over the age of 65, not including those with diabetes or hypertension. Although glomerular disease is the most common underlying etiology of age-related renal dysfunction, the cause of glomerular disease and whether it is the only contributor to renal failure are not known. Our studies in female mice show that renal disease in the postmenopausal period is associated with progressive glomerular enlargement and scarring, as well as abnormal renal function. To study the underlying causes of aging-related glomerular disease, we isolated and characterized glomerular smooth muscle (mesangial) cells from female mice of various ages. We found that the cells from older mice exhibit a variety of phenotypic changes, including increased concentrations of p27, a protein that serves to inhibit progression from the G1 to the S phase of the cell cycle. Because the bone marrow (BM) contains mesangial cell progenitors that can transfer the donor glomerular phenotype (normal or diseased) to recipients, we exchanged BM between postmenopausal and premenopausal mice and found that aging-related glomerular enlargement and scarring are transferred to young recipient glomeruli. In addition, BM from normal, young donors led to the regression of aging-related glomerular disease in postmenopausal recipients; namely, both glomerular enlargement and scarring were reduced. Thus, aging-related glomerular disease is an entity distinct from all other causes of renal disease, is characterized by phenotypic changes in mesangial cell progenitors, and is reversible when the phenotype of the progenitors is returned to normal.  相似文献

Product returns present one of the biggest operational challenges in the world of Internet retailing due to the sheer volume and cost of processing returns. But returns also represent an often‐missed opportunity to manage customer relationships and build customer loyalty to the retailer. Based upon data from a survey of 464 customers of five different Internet retailers, this article explores how firms' returns management systems affect loyalty intentions. We draw upon extant literature in the fields of Internet retailing, service quality, supply chain management, and customer satisfaction/loyalty to develop a model and a set of hypotheses relating ten latent variables in the service returns offering area. Our resulting structural equation model provides evidence of the impact of the returns management system upon customer loyalty intentions. The model also identifies effects on loyalty intentions arising from customers' satisfaction with, and perceptions of, the value of the returns service offered. These findings will help inform managers' choices regarding investment in the returns management system as an element of service quality improvement and a potential means of improved profitability. In addition, this study's empirical exploration and testing of a returns management model in the Internet retailing environment is a contribution to the currently underrepresented body of academic literature linking marketing and supply chain management in the context of end consumers.  相似文献

For many firms, radio frequency identification (RFID) suggests not only a new alternative to existing tracking methods but also a means to a range of previously cost‐prohibitive internal control and supply chain coordination innovations. In any event, and even in light of possible external pressures to adopt, the full potential of RFID for an individual firm must ultimately be viewed in consideration with the infrastructural capabilities of that firm. Furthermore, because adoption decisions are fundamentally based on managerial perceptions, it is critical to consider how certain forms of infrastructure provide the necessary transparency into other infrastructural characteristics to augment such decisions. We use multisource survey data in this work to consider several elements that contribute to this infrastructure and subsequently to perceptions of RFID benefit and actual commitment to adoption. Results demonstrate that the complementary effects of these infrastructural capabilities significantly impact both perceptions of and commitments to RFID.  相似文献

This research examined adolescents’ judgments about lying to avoid parental control over different types of activities. Participants (N = 66, Mage = 16.38, 73% European American) were interviewed about hypothetical situations describing adolescents who defied parental directives and lied about their defiance. Judgments about the legitimacy of parents’ directives and protagonists’ deception differed by types of parent relationship with adolescents (mutual or unilateral). Directives were least accepted, and deception was most accepted, in the context of unilateral relationships. Judgments also differed by domain of the action (personal, prudential, or conventional). Participants were least accepting of parental directives, and most accepting of deception about personal activities. Findings indicate that adolescents value honesty and parental authority, but sometimes give priority to concerns with autonomy and mutuality.  相似文献

The authors explored the importance of sex for 1,289 women living with HIV in Canada. Approximately half of women viewed sex as “very” (19.6%) or “somewhat” important (32.3%) and the remaining reported “neither important or unimportant” (22.0%), “somewhat unimportant” (5.4%), or “not at all important” (20.1%). Women who had a regular sex partner, identified as African, Caribbean, or Black, were more educated, believed HIV treatment prevents transmission, or had better physical health-related quality-of-life reported greater importance of sex, whereas those who were older, used illicit drugs, or experienced violence in adulthood reported lesser importance. Findings underscore the diversity of women's perspectives within the context of their lives.  相似文献

Advances in treatments have increased the longevity of people with HIV. The high prevalence of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) creates a greater risk for exposure that increases with age. Seroadaptation, which includes serosorting (sexual behavior and condom use based on knowing the serostatus of self and partners) and strategic sexual positioning (choosing receptive versus insertive anal sex), is sometimes used as an HIV risk-reduction strategy. This study examined seroadaptation, sexual communication, and HIV-risk behaviors in 420 sexually active HIV-negative MSM aged 40–81 years in South Florida via anonymous pen-and-paper questionnaire. Recreational drug use and serosorting (i.e., not using condoms if the partner said he was HIV-negative) were associated with higher risk for unprotected receptive anal intercourse. Younger age, greater number of partners, and serosorting were associated with higher risk for unprotected insertive anal intercourse. Understanding these behaviors in this group might help guide HIV-prevention efforts. Future research may examine the role of HIV-prevention medication (PrEP) in influencing sexual behavior in midlife and older MSM.  相似文献
