Cultural influences on problem gambling stigma were examined using a between subject vignette study design. Students of East
Asian (n = 64) and Caucasian (n = 50) ancestry recruited from a Canadian University rated a vignette describing either an
East Asian problem gambler or a Caucasian problem gambler on a measure of attitudinal social distance. In accordance with
the hypothesis, a factorial ANOVA revealed that East Asian Canadians stigmatize problem gambling more than Caucasian Canadians.
Moreover, East Asian participants stigmatized the East Asian individual described in the vignette more than they did the Caucasian
individual. Individuals with gambling problems were generally not perceived as being dangerous. However, participants who
perceived problem gambling as a dangerous condition wanted more social distance than those who did not perceive individuals

This paper focuses on preferences for specific characteristics in a potential partner using data from 1993 to 1999 provided by a French marriage bureau. We perform an econometric analysis of the various traits either sought or rejected in a potential partner, respectively by men and women. Our results are consistent with investment in marriage. On the one hand, men tend to reject vulgar and unfaithful women, meaning that they are likely to suffer serious fitness costs from infidelity. Innovation activities in transition economies generally lag behind developed economies. This is also the case in the latest group of EU candidate countries whose innovation performance lags behind EU-27 average. In this paper we analyze the innovation propensity of firms in EU candidate countries (Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro and Turkey). The analysis relies on the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS 2009) data. By employing probit model we have identified determinants of innovation propensity in analyzed countries. The results point to external factors such as the subsidies, customer pressure to innovate, obstacles from high tax burdens, political instability and inadequate education of workforce as significant positive predictors. While previous research has explored the causes and consequences of school truancy, few studies have considered the meanings
of institutional responses. This paper offers an ethnographic analysis of a pilot program promoted as a “progressive” form
of truancy intervention. Midvale Truancy Center claimed to focus on education, rather than punishment. In practice, however,
the crime control tactics used to capture, isolate, and discipline truants often overshadowed the Center’s educational objectives,
locating the Center in a liminal space between school and detention facility. The Center’s competing goals—revenue creation,
truancy deterrence, and organizational survival—resulted in rehabilitation being pushed aside in favor of normalization and
behavioral control. These findings illustrate a recent larger cultural turn toward control and punishment (Garland 2001), and the encroachment of crime control tactics into the civil sphere. 相似文献

Indirect reciprocity is cooperation through reputation: third parties cooperate with those known to cooperate and defect against those known to defect. Defection, then, can have the unjust motive of greed or the just motive of retaliation. To establish cooperation, observers should distinguish both motives for defection and respond more cooperatively to the latter. We propose that the expression of emotions may facilitate this inferential process. Indeed, in two laboratory studies participants inferred that defection out of anger or disappointment was a just response to a defector and they responded more cooperatively than when no emotion was communicated. Moreover, participants inferred that defectors who evoked disappointment instead of anger had a relatively positive reputation. We conclude that emotions help establish cooperation through indirect reciprocity. 相似文献

This study examined the relationship between a history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) for one or both members of a romantic couple and perceptions of contempt and defensiveness for self and partner. Data from the Relationship Evaluation (RELATE) were analyzed for 10,061 couples. The findings suggest that when either or both partner(s) has a history of CSA, contempt and defensiveness in the couple relationship are greater than when neither reports a history of CSA. Furthermore, the males' experience of CSA had a greater impact on their perceptions of self and partner's contempt and defensiveness than females' experience of CSA. Explanations of gender differences are offered and implications for future research and practice are suggested. 相似文献

To explore how people experience grief and what factors are perceived as facilitating successful grief work, a survey was distributed to people who had completed a grief recovery course. The results showed that emotions, cognitions, physical expressions, and behaviors all characterize grief, but that emotions are the most central component. The course brought relief and was regarded most favorably by those having at least 1 year between the grief trigger event and participation in the course. Writing a letter in which course participants express their feelings to the loss object was perceived as the most successful aspect of the course. The letter might help with grief recovery by bringing aspects that have not been dealt with into conscious awareness. 相似文献

A modern method for (partial) acquisitions is the so called creeping-in tactic. In this procedure the acquirer uses cash settled equity swaps to undermine WpHG notification requirements systematically until she holds at least 30% of the voting rights in the target company. In this case the acquirer has the obligation to submit a mandatory takeover bid for the remaining outstanding shares. In many cases acquirers are not interested in a complete acquisition of the target company but rather want to make use of low shareholder presence levels during the general assembly and therefore have the opportunity to significantly influence fundamental decisions like, e.g. allocation of the net income, corporate actions etc. The mandatory takeover bid has to be equal at least to the three months average share price. At first glance, this involves a high risk of an unintentional acceptance by the targets?? shareholders. The goal of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness of the mandatory takeover bid. We show that with a temporal shift of the mandatory takeover bid to a point in time when the share price is above the three months average share price an unintentional acceptance is virtually impossible.
