How home care workers (HCWs) adapt their classroom training to their workplaces is central to their own safety and that of their care recipients. A case study approach was adopted for this inquiry into HCW training in Australia, where new workers were directly observed and interviewed in their workplaces following classroom training. Findings from the study advance four contributions: (a) learning is person-dependent, (b) artefacts in the form of written materials afford a valuable form of learning support; (c) opportunities for these workers to meet, share and refresh their knowledge are important for further development of occupational capacities; and (d) more organisational support for such socially isolated workers’ learning is needed.  相似文献

One of the most effective sources of legitimation for privileged access to the environment and its natural resources comes in the form of hegemonic ideologies, such as private property rights. The concentratiosn of ownership and control over land and natural resources is rarely contested, because to question the rights of an industrial actor's property rights would be to question the ideological premise that private property ownership promotes societal well-being and progress. The staying power of this and other hegemonic ideologies, however, derives from the ability to keep certain internal contradictions associated with those ideologies concealed. Using recent conceptual work on ideology, this article focuses on recent events in forest politics in northern California, to illustrate the means by which environmental catastrophe has served as a source of vulnerability to the present hegemony of the ideology of private property rights. As with other instances of environmental justice mobilization, this case illustrates how the ability to elucidate contradictions in hegemonic ideologies may provide a more potent avenue for social transformation than attempts to introduce alternative ideologies.  相似文献

This paper examines antecedents and consequences of faculty women’s academic–parental role balancing, defined as the process of experiencing greater interrole facilitation/enhancement than interrole conflict/depletion. It is posited that childcare responsibilities affect the career–family challenges academic women face, i.e., dueling tenure and biological clocks, reduced mobility for faculty women with children, and the illusion that a flexible academic schedule permits one to perform all the responsibilities of a full-time academic and a full-time parent. The paper presents a theoretical model of factors that serve either to contribute to or complicate academic–parental role balancing. Propositions about the relationships between these antecedents and role balancing, and between role balancing and its consequences, are identified. Practical implications of academic–parental role balancing are also considered.

ABSTRACT

Nursing homes have been mandated to maintain or promote the physical and psychological functioning of residents since the enactment of the 1987 Omnibus Reconciliation Act. Although this restorative approach to care has improved outcomes for some residents (Institute of Medicine, 2001 Institute of Medicine. 2001. Improving the quality of long term care, Washington, DC: National Academy Press.  [Google Scholar]), it ignores the reality that all permanently placed residents will die. A new model for long-term care, one that includes a simultaneous restorative and palliative approach to care delivery, is proposed. Palliative care principles provide a guiding framework for changing care delivery. Basic tenets, such as resident and family viewed as a unit of care, interdisciplinary teamwork, and interdisciplinary plans of care, provide a basis for specific operational suggestions. Operational strategies, such as psychosocial and spiritual support for family, resident decision making and participation in goal setting, expertise in aggressive pain and symptom control, and bereavement services following resident death, are described.  相似文献

The Listening Styles Profile (LSP-16) was developed to measure an individual's preferred listening style. One frequent criticism of the LSP-16 is the consistently low estimates of internal consistency. The following study addresses this concern using confirmatory factor analysis to assess both the latent constructs of the scale (i.e., People, Content, Action, Time) and the scale's reliability. Results suggest that listening style is multidimensional; however, additional scale development is needed to increase subscale reliability estimates. To further our understanding of listening as a cognitive process, a greater understanding of the relationship between listening and other personality and cognitive constructs is needed. To that end, this study explores the relationship between need for cognition and listening style preference. Results indicate that need for cognition is moderately associated with the Content listening style such that participants with higher need for cognition scores exhibit a higher preference for content listening.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a telephone survey of workers' compensation carriers, addressing how occupational therapy work programs can best meet these carriers' needs. Fifty percent of the market share of workers' compensation carriers in Michigan participated in the survey. Survey results indicated that workers' compensation carriers found Functional Capacity Evaluations, job analyses, and work hardening to be important work rehabilitation services. A significant portion of the respondents (88%) stated that they recognized the need for clinically successful work rehabilitation programs and indicated that if they had return to work rates for different providers, they would utilize providers that had the most successful outcome data in a specific geographical area. Occupational therapists can use these survey results to improve their services and communication with insurance to ensure that injured workers will continue to have access to the efficacious interventions occupational therapists provide in work rehabilitation.  相似文献

Data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics supports predictions from the minority vulnerability thesis concerning the determinants of job layoffs among African Americans and Whites who work in upper-middle-class occupations. Specifically, after controlling for seniority, layoffs for African Americans are relatively unstructured by traditional stratification-based causal factors, namely, background socioeconomic status, human-capital credentials, and job/labor market characteristics. Analyses also indicate that racial differences in the determinants of layoffs are more pronounced in nonservice-based than service-based firms in the private sector and in the private sector relative to the public sector.  相似文献

This study explored youths' and parents' perceptions of family interaction processes as well as the broader social and cultural factors that influence family functioning in a multiethnic sample of inner-city families with delinquent youth. In-depth interviews were conducted with 61 male youths and 33 parents predominantly from minority families. Guided by an ecological framework, qualitative data analyses were employed to explore individual and contextual factors that were perceived either to foster or to impede individual and family functioning. Findings supported previous empirical research highlighting the importance of family interaction processes in the lives of delinquent youths. Analysis of parent and youth data revealed important relationships among the individual, family, and community domains. The emphases placed on these interrelationships, however, varied in distinct and notable ways for parents and youths. The implications of these divergent patterns for family-level interventions are addressed.  相似文献
