Youth civic and political participation (CPP) has been a central concern of research and public policy. This situation has been motivated by growing signs of the disaffection of younger generations, at least regarding conventional forms of participation. Recent theoretical debates stress how forms of CPP are evolving; nevertheless it is obviously important to integrate young people's views in the discussion, particularly taking into account groups at risk of exclusion, such as immigrants. This paper intends to contribute to this discussion by considering the meanings that young people attribute to their civic and political experiences, using data collected with focus groups (N = 94) that address the factors that facilitate and/or inhibit the participation of young people from immigrant (Brazilian and Angolan) and non-immigrant (Portuguese) backgrounds. Data will be analysed according to three main dimensions: (1) participants' sources of knowledge, information and influence; (2) participants' views on civic and political engagement: relevance, resources, personal experiences, trustworthiness and efficacy; and (3) participants' perceptions of excluded groups and proposals to promote inclusion. Results show that the experiences and levels of participation of young people of Brazilian and Angolan origin are influenced by their immigrant background. In addition, they indicate a strong tendency of young people to emphasise constraints over opportunities. They feel like incomplete or in-the-making citizens, and state their claim for rights and opportunities to be heard and to be civic and politically engaged.  相似文献

Externality games are studied in Grafe et al. (1998, Math. Methods Op. Res. 48, 71). We define a generalization of this class of games and show, using the methodology in Izquierdo and Rafels (1996, 2001, Working paper, Univ Barcelona; Games Econ. Behav. 36, 174), some properties of the new class of generalized externality games. They include, among others, the algebraic structure of the game, convexity, and their implications for the study of cooperative solutions. Also the proportional rule is characterized for this class of games.  相似文献

Abstract

We use chi-squared and related pivot variables to induce probability measures for model parameters, obtaining some results that will be useful on the induced densities. As illustration we considered mixed models with balanced cross nesting and used the algebraic structure to derive confidence intervals for the variance components. A numerical application is presented.  相似文献

There are several statistical hypothesis tests available for assessing normality assumptions, which is an a priori requirement for most parametric statistical procedures. The usual method for comparing the performances of normality tests is to use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain point estimates for the corresponding powers. The aim of this work is to improve the assessment of 9 normality hypothesis tests. For that purpose, random samples were drawn from several symmetric and asymmetric nonnormal distributions and Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to compute confidence intervals for the power achieved, for each distribution, by two of the most usual normality tests, Kolmogorov–Smirnov with Lilliefors correction and Shapiro–Wilk. In addition, the specificity was computed for each test, again resorting to Monte Carlo simulations, taking samples from standard normal distributions. The analysis was then additionally extended to the Anderson–Darling, Cramer-Von Mises, Pearson chi-square Shapiro–Francia, Jarque–Bera, D'Agostino and uncorrected Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests by determining confidence intervals for the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves. Simulations were performed to this end, wherein for each sample from a nonnormal distribution an equal-sized sample was taken from a normal distribution. The Shapiro–Wilk test was seen to have the best global performance overall, though in some circumstances the Shapiro–Francia or the D'Agostino tests offered better results. The differences between the tests were not as clear for smaller sample sizes. Also to be noted, the SW and KS tests performed generally quite poorly in distinguishing between samples drawn from normal distributions and t Student distributions.  相似文献

Traditionally, reliability assessment of devices has been based on life tests (LTs) or accelerated life tests (ALTs). However, these approaches are not practical for high-reliability devices which are not likely to fail in experiments of reasonable length. For these devices, LTs or ALTs will end up with a high censoring rate compromising the traditional estimation methods. An alternative approach is to monitor the devices for a period of time and assess their reliability from the changes in performance (degradation) observed during the experiment. In this paper, we present a model to evaluate the problem of train wheel degradation, which is related to the failure modes of train derailments. We first identify the most significant working conditions affecting the wheel wear using a nonlinear mixed-effects (NLME) model where the log-rate of wear is a linear function of some working conditions such as side, truck and axle positions. Next, we estimate the failure time distribution by working condition analytically. Point and interval estimates of reliability figures by working condition are also obtained. We compare the results of the analysis via an NLME to the ones obtained by an approximate degradation analysis.  相似文献
