In an earlier contribution to this journal, Kauermann and Weihs (Adv. Stat. Anal. 91(4):344 2007) addressed the lack of procedural understanding in statistical consulting: “Even though there seems to be a consensus that statistical consulting should be well structured and target-orientated, the range of activity and the process itself seem to be less well-understood.” While this issue appears to be rather new to statistical consultants, other consulting disciplines—in particular management consultants—have long come up with a viable approach that divides the typical consulting process into seven successive steps. Using this model as a frame allows for reflecting the approaches on statistical consulting suggested by authors published in AStA volume 91, number 4, and for adding value to statistical consulting in general.  相似文献

Let f(n) be the maximum integer such that for every set F of at most f(n) vertices of the hypercube Q n , there exists a cycle of length at least 2 n ?2|F| in Q n ?F. Casta?eda and Gotchev conjectured that $f(n)=\binom{n}{2}-2$ . We prove this conjecture. We also prove that for every set F of at most (n 2+n?4)/4 vertices of Q n , there exists a path of length at least 2 n ?2|F|?2 in Q n ?F between any two vertices such that each of them has at most 3 neighbors in F. What would it mean for program leaders and caregivers to shape the thinking of typically developing youth toward their peers with disabilities in a way that we could regard as ethically sound? The author weaves examples from his research in settings such as Girl Scout troops and Boys and Girls Clubs as well as his own parenting experiences to answer this question. He has found that it is commonplace for program leaders, coaches, and others to avoid direct discussion or acknowledgment of the disabilities of children in their groups, in the mistaken belief that this is the best way to demonstrate that all children are equal and to avoid the perception of discrimination. His interpretation is that this is not a product of thoughtlessness but of caring staff and volunteers who believe they are doing the right thing--the ethical thing--by avoiding acknowledgment of individual differences. Disabilities--even when they are readily apparent--are treated as if they were invisible. Rather than giving disabilities the "silent treatment," the author challenges us to go beyond the prevailing ethos and find ways to build on naturally occurring opportunities to learn more about individual needs and supports.  相似文献

In the Human Development Index (HDI), life expectancy is the only indicator used in modeling the dimension ‘a long and healthy life’. Whereas life expectancy is a direct measure of quantity of life, it is only an indirect measure of healthy years lived. In this paper we attempt to remedy this omission by introducing into the HDI the morbidity indicator, “expected lost healthy years” (LHE), used in the World Health Report Though LHE is only weakly correlated with life expectancy and displays considerable variation across countries, the ranking of nations using the adjusted HDI is very similar to that from the HDI. Nevertheless, there are some outlier countries (including large countries like China and the United States) that experience notable changes in rank. Given the considerable variation in the morbidity data across gender, we also adjust the Gender-related Development Index (GDI) in a similar fashion. The ranking using the adjusted GDI is very similar to that from the GDI, but it has a lower rank correlation with the HDI.  相似文献

Freedom of information laws are intended to illuminate how governments operate. However, the operations of governments increasingly involve algorithms, such as those used to recommend criminal sentencing and determine eligibility for social services. Algorithms function as ‘black boxes’ that turn inputs into outputs using processes that are often, by design, not transparent. Freedom of information laws allow one potential means for algorithmic transparency. However, whether such laws can be used to access algorithms is unclear. This research examines, in two ways, the availability of government algorithms to the public. First, this study examines laws, regulations, advisory opinions, and court rulings relevant to the disclosure of algorithms. The second part of this study analyzes actual responses by US government agencies to Freedom of Information Act requests for algorithms. This study concludes that governmental policies and practices related to algorithmic disclosure are inconsistent. Such inconsistencies suggest a need for better mechanisms to hold government algorithms accountable.  相似文献

This paper identified additive and synergistic effects of personality for management ratings of business values. Results were discussed in terms of theoretical implications for the MBTI and type theory as well as implications for management within business organizations. There appears to be a natural affinity (and antipathy) between some personality types or forms and certain business values.
