Interblock information in multidimensional block designs

In many experimental situations, d-way heterogeneity among experimental units may be controlled through use of multiple blocking criteria. In some cases it is reasonable to regard some or all of the block effects as random. Then the model is mixed and observations within blocks are correlated. Very general estimators of treatment effects and their dispersion matrix with recovery of interblock information are provided. They apply to designs with d > 1 blocking criteria that may be crossed, nested, or a combination thereof. These general results may be specialized to provide analyses of new classes of MBD's or used directly for numerical analyses of designs in the general class, perhaps through use as the basis for very general computer programs. Estimation of variance components is discussed, and an example is provided to illustrate adaptation of the general results.     

Resisting the pull of the health insurance tarbaby: An organizational model for surviving managed care

Insurance company managed mental health care makes a basic change in the clinical process, transforming what had been a therapeutic dyad into a three-party process. The newly formed San Fernando Valley Alliance of Mental Health Professionals for the Preservation of Privacy and Self Determination in Psychotherapy seeks to preserve the practice of traditional psychotherapy and keep it accessible to a middle-income clientele by a public education process in which the privacy and autonomy of the therapeutic dyad are presented as thesine qua non of psychotherapy.     

Reconnecting with policy: requirements for survival as a mental health nurse

This article discusses the disconnection between mental health nurses and policy, and the importance of reconnecting such relationships not only to benefit the consumers with whom we work but also to influence health care policies and, ultimately, contribute to strategies to improve the health of our nation. In this article, I draw on my own experiences and apply these to a discussion of how we, as mental health nurses, can influence and strengthen our relationships with nursing policy.     

Geriatric Social Work Career Tracking: Graduates of the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE)

Despite a growing need for geriatric social workers, there is a question as to whether MSW graduates who are gerontologically prepared actually enter the workforce to serve older adults. By tracking MSW graduates who had special training in aging, this study aims to explore their job search and career experience. Findings show that most graduates located aging-related jobs 4 months postgraduation and remained committed to the field 1 to 2 years later. The majority were working in direct service provision in clinical settings. Their salaries compare favorably with those of generic social workers. Implications for geriatric social work education are discussed.     

Caregiver's Spirituality and Its Influence on Maintaining the Elderly and Disabled in a Home Environment

ABSTRACT

This study examined the role that faith-based organizations play for caregivers in maintaining the elderly and disabled in their homes. The study explored if persons who use religious beliefs and practices cope with caregiver stress better than those who do not use religious beliefs and practices. The study also explored the role of religious coping as a factor affecting decisions to institutionalize, and the role that faith-based practices and organizations play in helping caregivers maintain the elderly and disabled in their homes.     

Grandfriends,an Intergenerational Program for Nursing-Home Residents and Preschoolers: A Randomized Trial

Intergenerational programs may improve meaningful engagement for people with dementia and for attitudes toward older people in youth. Grandfriends, a 12-week program increased passive engagement and enjoyment among nursing home residents when interacting with preschoolers (n = 21) in comparison to usual activities. Grandfriends participants (n = 20) did not show changes on quality of life, agitation, or sense of community in comparison to residents (n = 20) randomized to usual care. Suggestions for future programs are given.     

We're both tenured professors . . .but where is home?

Mills' sociological imagination is used to look at relevant issues in the life of a lesbian academic couple in a distance relationship. Analysis includes concerns which are common to both lesbian and heterosexual couples in distance situations such as finding jobs, tenure, productivity, mentoring, managing two households, communication, community, and those items unique to lesbian couples-coming out to students, finding and maintaining a lesbian community, effects of hiring practices in academe. Based on the analysis, recommendations are presented.
