The non-null distribution for the problem of tests of independence

The problem of testing independence in the multinormal case is considered in this paper. The non-null distribution of the likelihood ratio criterion is obtained for the case of two subvectors by using a simple straightforward technique. The null case as well as the known cases are also verified.     

Experiments in mixed integer linear programming in a manufacturing system

This paper reports on a Manufacturing System and two Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) applications concurrent to it. The System is made up of four integrated modules designed to address problems of Strategic, Tactical and Operational Planning. The MIP applications concern problems of plant site selection and production planning. Optimization is done via the IBM's MPSX/370 Mathematical Programming Software.     

Patient satisfaction in primary health care: a literature review and analysis.

This paper reviews the literature on patient satisfaction in primary health care settings. Definitions and models of satisfaction are considered first. Attention is given to the conceptualization of satisfaction by investigators concerned about consumers in general as well as by researchers focusing on consumers of medical services. Research findings are discussed and used to develop a model of patient satisfaction. The measurement of patient satisfaction and the findings of empirical studies are then reviewed, including summaries of effect sizes. It is concluded that patient satisfaction information can provide a dependent measure of service quality and serves as a predictor of health-related behavior. Issues deserving further investigation and recommendations regarding research strategies are presented.     

Adolescent crisis and suicidal behavior: Dynamics and treatment

Suicide among adolescents is increasing. Three interacting factors—the crisis of adolescent development, family dysfunctioning, and social factors—create vulnerability to feelings of rejection and worthlessness among suicidal adolescents. Long-term family problems that are not openly acknowledged but for which the adolescent feels responsible are particularly relevant. The authors recommend a multiple approach to assessment and treatment in which crisis intervention is employed initially; and individual treatment for the adolescent and family therapy are utilized concurrently on a long-term basis.     

Community: Toward an integration of research,theory, evaluation,and public policy considerations

This article presents a paradigm for the analysis of communities and investments designed to improve them. Its fundamental objective is to provide the researcher, the theoretician, the evaluator, and the public policymaker with a common analytic framework. Direct and indirect effects of investment programs (e.g., in education, economic development, and health) can be documented longitudinally, and the community analyzed as an independent, dependent or mediating variable. The roots of this approach in social science and policy theory are explored. Five concepts (Status, Change, Interaction, Duality of Interaction and Change, and Viability) are incorporated. Community is operationally defined to include fifteen sectors whose interactions and changes can be studied systematically over time. This approach can help to clarify how a community, its people, culture, and institutions, and the outside world both influence and are influenced by investment programs.     

The ideological context of child welfare

This paper examines consequences for child development and well-being of the prevailing institutional order and ideology of the United States and concludes that child development in our country is severely obstructed because of socially structured violence which permeates our way of life. The paper ends with comments on prospects for social transformation which seems necessary to assure the development and well-being of every child.
