Conditions that foster and hinder participatory research are examined, using examples from one such research project aimed
at dropout reduction undertaken with students in a “last chance” high school. Student researchers sometimes used racial, gender,
and social class differences to gain power and display undemocratic behavior within the group. Dilemmas arose as small-scale
actions were implemented that seemed to threaten the power and authority of teachers and administrators both within the alternative
school and the traditional high schools that fed into it. The limits to extending democracy to students through research are
identified, drawing upon recent theoretical work on feminist pedagogy and participatory research. The conclusion is that youths
need to be taken seriously as knowers and potential agents of change and that adults who want to work with adolescent researchers

We developed three Professional Development Laboratories: Centers for Literacy and Community Services that addressed four pressing needs in the current urban school crisis: the preparation of in-service teachers to be literacy specialists, the dire need for qualified teachers in urban settings, the professional development of uncertified urban teachers, and the literacy needs of the children and families these teachers serve. These centers were housed in three inner-city schools rather than at the university and thus were able to serve larger numbers of children. Since many of the teachers in these schools are novice or uncertified teachers, we offered on-site in-service courses in order to enhance their ability to help their students. By housing the Centers for Literacy and Community Services on site in the schools, we sought to reach students and families who might otherwise not be able to avail themselves of these services. Unique to this project was that our graduate literacy education students tutored students on site in schools, the university faculty worked alongside the graduate students, and both students and faculty provided services to enhance the professional development of teachers and administrators in the area of literacy. Additionally, this project was distinguished by the inclusion of a component designed to provide literacy education services to the families and caregivers of the children. 相似文献

Two experiments examined how 7- and 8-year-old children, 9- and 10-year-old children, and adults process mismatched, task-related speech and gesture differently as a function of development. Participants watched videotapes of children speaking and gesturing about the concept of conservation. Using a recognition paradigm, we assessed immediate memory for information conveyed in mismatched speech and gesture. In Experiment 1, we used recognition of verbal statements to probe participants' memory, whereas in Experiment 2, we used recognition of gestural statements to probe memory. When probed with verbal statements in Experiment 1, 9- and 10-year-old children failed to retrieve gestured information. When probed with gestural statements in Experiment 2, 9- and 10-year-old children failed to retrieve verbal information. In contrast, the younger children and adults showed retrieval of both verbal and gestural information across both recognition methods in Experiments 1 and 2. These results suggest a U-shaped function with the 9- and 10-year-old children showing a limitation in the ability to process contradictory messages simultaneously conveyed in two modalities. Implications for identifying a transitional period in the development of representational skills are discussed. 相似文献

Although scholars have examined marketing encroachment on public relations in the for-profit sector, little research has been done on encroachment by fund raising in the nonprofit sector. This article documents fund-raising encroachment and theorizes about external and internal factors contributing to it. It concludes that role as a technician, perception of public relations as a secondary function, organizational turbulence, and dependency on private gifts lead to the takeover of the public relations department. 相似文献

In order to demonstrate the existence of such effects in individuals, the Range Test for circular data is applied to data collected over a 2-year period from a specific case from the Edinburgh Regional Poisoning Treatment Centre. Most research on the effectiveness of prenatal care has focused on birth outcomes and has found small or no effects. It is
possible, however, that prenatal care is “too little too late” to improve pregnancy outcomes in the aggregate, but that it
increases the use of pediatric health care or improves maternal health-related parenting practices and, ultimately, child
health. We use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing birth cohort study that have been augmented with hospital
medical record data to estimate effects of prenatal care timing on pediatric health care utilization and health-related parenting
behaviors during the first year of the child’s life. We focus on maternal postpartum smoking, preventive health care visits
for the child, and breastfeeding. We use a multi-pronged approach to address the potential endogeneity of the timing of prenatal
care. We find that first trimester prenatal care appears to decrease maternal postpartum smoking by about 5 percentage points
and increase the likelihood of 4 or more well-baby visits by about 1 percentage point, and that it may also have a positive
effect on breastfeeding. These findings suggest that there are benefits to standard prenatal care that are generally not considered
in evaluations of prenatal care programs and interventions. 相似文献
