Repeated measurements designs - a review

Any experiment in which one or more of the experimental units is used more than once is called a repeated measurements experiment. The associated design of a repeated measurements experiment is referred to as a repeated measurements design. This review covers some known results on repeated measurements designs. Emphasis is placed on the impact of optimal design theory. Some construction methods for these designs are presented. Hedayat and Afsarinejad (1975) has an extensive bibliography of earlier literature. A bibliography of these designs published after 1974 is provided at the end of this paper.     

Bhattacharyya distance based linear discriminant function for stationary time series

The problem of classifying a covariance stationary normal time series is considered. Under certain regularity conditions, a compact form of the linear discriminant function in the sense of maximizing the Bhattacharyya distance is obtained.     

On the asymptotic distribution of an estimate of the change point in a failure rate

The failure rate r(t) is assumed to have the shape of the"first"part of the"bathtub"model, i.e.r(t) is non-increasing for t<r and is constant for t> r. Asymptotic distribution of one of the estimates proposed earlier has been investigated in this paper. This leads to a test for the hypothesis HQ r<r ₀ vs H :r>r (where TQ > 0). Asymptotic expression for the power of this test under Pitman alternatives is derived. Some simulations are reported.     

Multi-stage estimation of the common location parameter of several exponential distributions

The problem of constructing a confidence interval of ‘preassigned width and coverage probability’ considered by Costanza/ Hamdy and Son(1986) is further analyzed. Several multi-stage estimation procedures [ like, purely sequential, accelerated sequential and three-stage procedures ] are utilized to deal with the same estimation problem. The relative advantages and disadvantages of these procedures are discussed.     

A note on the operating characteristic curve of the known sigma single sampling variables plan

The operating characteristic curves of certain known sigma variables sampling plans may not be satisfactory in that they have a tendency to reject even lots of acceptable quality. This note presents the theory and a method to identify such known sigma variables plans possessing unsatisfactory operating characteristic curves.     

On estimating the conditional probability of discovering a new species

Based on a capture-recapture sample of size $i;n+k,n≥ l,k ≥ 0, from a population of an unknown number of distinct species (or classes), the problem of estimating the total probability of the species unobserved in the first n selections is considered. As the estimand depends on both the unknown parameters and the data, the standard theory of estimation is inadequate for this problem A suitable definition of sufficiency is introduced and used to prove a Rao-Blackwell type result and discuss uniformly minimum mean squared error unbiased estimation. An alternative proof for an inadmissibility result is presented. The new proof gives more insight and a method for deriving improved estimators. The theoretical developments may be useful in other problems concerning inferences about random parametric functions.
