The article looks into how the binary opposition ‘we ‘ and ‘them ‘ is reproduced and legitimized in attitudinal surveys, specifically the Eurobarometer series. The Eurobarometer 30 and 39 are among the most widely cited and, therefore, most influential sources among academics and politicians interested in knowing about how Europeans think of those defined as ‘non‐Europeans ‘. The author contends that attitudinal research of the kind exemplified by the Eurobarometerproblematües the ‘other’ instead of recognizing that it is our ability to speak about an ‘other’ as ‘out‐group’ in the first place which constitutes the problem; in that it establishes yet another space in which a stereotypical and debasing language of ‘we and them’ becomes the norm.  相似文献

Individual-level investigations of the link between personaleconomic well-being and political preference commonly turn upfindings at odds with aggregate, overtime analyses. Althoughvarious theoretical explanations for this anomaly have beenadvanced, we focus on a different culprit: the possibly frailmeasure employed in survey based studies. We develop improvedmeasures of change in personal economic well-being and use anational survey of the American electorate to test them. Ourfindings are striking: although the traditional question usedby survey researchers is quite valid, its unreliability hascaused the effect of personal economic well-being on politicalevaluations to be substantially underestimated.  相似文献

This article illuminates the importance of the person who occupies the role of teacher by focusing on three experienced, well-regarded teachers who work in urban schools. Ms. Smith teaches sixth grade social studies in an independent school, Mr. Peters teaches religious studies in a Catholic high school for boys, and Ms. Walsh teaches English and Public Speaking in a public high school. Despite noteworthy differences in setting, in subject matter, and more, all three teachers reveal that good teaching is at once both an intellectual and a moral endeavor. They show how important it is for teachers to develop a sense of community and of trust in the classroom. Finally, their work sheds light on why a teacher's intellectual and moral sensibility plays a significant role in his or her influence on students.  相似文献

New Public Management reforms have been argued to intensify the use of strategic management in public organizations, but there is a need to understand how reforms influence specific aspects such as strategy processes and strategy content. The NPM reforms are expected to formalize and professionalize strategy processes and strategy content towards greater competitiveness, but this may counter cooperation between organizations, which is essential in many areas for overall service provision. Research has provided little empirical knowledge about the simultaneous competition and cooperation in the public sector. This study offers such knowledge via a panel case study of five Danish upper secondary schools over a ten‐year period during a large NPM reform. The study includes three rounds of interviews with school principals before, during and after the reform, combined with secondary data. The study shows that, during reform implementation, strategy processes become more formalized and professionalized, and that teachers, in particular, lose influence. Regarding strategy content, the authors find an increase in external focus and competition, though schools maintain a focus on cooperation. The results suggest that NPM reforms can significantly change strategic management in public organizations, and that this is not necessarily at the expense of cooperation, at least in the short run.  相似文献

In this article, we explore young children's experiences of having a parent with type 1 diabetes (T1D). In our research we found that the children's knowledge about T1D was not age related, and that some had more in-depth knowledge than others. This seemed related to how and what the parents taught them about diabetes, the individual child's curiosity and interest, and the parent's history with fluctuating blood sugar levels. Several children were affected by their parents' diabetes in their daily life. Our research contributes to knowledge about how children's lives can be affected by having a parent with chronic illness.  相似文献
