Education for Democratic Citizenship through A Literacy‐based Approach: A Case of South African Township Children

The study contextualises the position of child citizens in the South African democracy and highlights how education for democratic citizenship is employed through a literacy‐based approach. The qualitative study was exploratory and based on a lesson presented to nine‐year‐old township children by giving them language‐related tasks. Through the children's voices we present the life experiences that expressed their need for basic services, education, extra facilities and security. We argue that children need to experience the benefits of democracy and education for democratic citizenship to build and sustain a resilient democratic society.     

Electronic distribution of public assistance benefits: System performance and stakeholder opinions

Several states have conducted pilot projects to test the feasibility of using electronic banking techniques to deliver public assistance benefits. These systems establish electronic account balances which recipients access through the use of a debit card at terminals such as bank automatic teller machines or transaction authorization machines like those that validate credit card charges. The present study examines the first test of a comprehensive electronic benefit transfer (EBT) system for multiple benefit programs, a pilot project for cash and food stamp programs conducted by the state of Maryland in the city of Baltimore. Surveys examined the issues perceived by the three primary sets of stakeholders:

  1. representatives of government, including social service workers (n = 47) and key state personnel;

• 2. 

  2. two-thirds of the participating retailers (n = 110); and

• 3. 

  3. benefit recipients (n = 882).All stakeholder groups were generally favorable regarding EBT. However, some subgroups were less favorable: small store operators were less favorable than larger ones and cash recipients were more favorable than food stamp participants. Understanding these opinions requires a closer examination of the meaning and use of public assistance programs by all participants.

     

Interval estimation of the median effective dose for a logistic dose-response curve

In 1986, Williams showed how, assuming a logistic dose-response curve, one can construct a confidence interval for the median effective dose from the asymptotic likelihood ratio test. He gave reasons for preferring this likelihood ratio interval to the established interval calculated by applying Fieller's theorem to the maximum-likelihood estimates. Here, we assess the impact of applying a Bartlett adjustment to the likelihood ratio statistic and introduce the score test as an alternative approach for constructing a confidence interval for the median effective dose.     

A TEACHING NOTE ON THE USE OF ASSUMPTIONS IN CASE STUDY

This note describes a modification in the conventional case method of instruction. The modification, which deals with the problem caused by each student making a different set of assumptions for a given case, has successfully met the test of classroom use.
