An anti-deficit perspective on black male student athletes’ educational experiences at a historically black college/university

The purpose of this study was to identify key institutional characteristics and practices at a historically black college/university (HBCU) that contributed to positive educational experiences for black male student athletes. This mixed methods exploratory study involved the use of a 79-item Student Athlete College Experiences Questionnaire (SACEQ), three focus group interviews, and four individual interviews. Participants in this study included 57 black male football and men’s basketball student athletes at an HBCU in the southeastern US. Institutional theory and the anti-deficit achievement framework were incorporated to highlight effective institutional practices at an HBCU. Findings revealed the presence of a nurturing familial campus climate and purposefully designed institutional programs enhanced black male student athletes’ educational experiences. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.     

汕头城市文化建设现状及其发展走向的思考

近年来,汕头的城市文化建设局面令人欣喜,市民感受到了政府在建设文化汕头、人文汕头方面付出的努力和取得的成果。但汕头城市文化的局限性依然明显,与现代城市文化尚有不小的距离。汕头城市文化建设过程中,既承载着他方无法复制和仿效的地方特色文化的光环,又同时背负着与任何一种传统文化一样所必然裹挟着的种种与现代文化格格不入的重负。基于对汕头优秀传统文化的保护和弘扬,对汕头文化建设现状的成绩的肯定和不足的反思,提出对汕头城市文化未来发展走向的建议。     

Fickle Families and the Kindness of Strangers: Social Capital in the Lives of Low-Income Single Mothers

This article is a qualitative study that examines the social capital in the lives of 20 formerly homeless and nearly homeless single mothers with children in their care. The findings for this study indicate that the mothers' close social ties simultaneously served as a resource and a hindrance to their progress into sustainable work or education. Findings also show that nearly all of the women in this study benefited from “weak” ties by receiving information or other kinds of resources from strangers or friends of friends. Implications for policy and practice are also discussed.

Language loss in Guatemala: A statistical analysis of the 1994 population census

This study examines several approaches linguists have taken to explain native language attrition. Five attitudinal factors linked to ethnolinguistic vitality are examined: minority status, access to, and participation in, institutions and markets, cultural strength, education, and migration. Each factor was quantified into proxy variables using information compiled from the 1994 Guatemalan national population census. After constructing the data set, the author used regression analysis of the proxy variables to determine the significance of each attitudinal factor. Minority status, participation in institutions and markets, education, and migration all showed statistically significant correlations with language attrition among Maya speakers in Guatemala. Cultural strength, however, did not show a statistically significant correlation to language loss in the country.

Sex differences in observers' reactions to a nurse's use of touch

We tested the notion that male and female observers would have different reactions to the use of touch by a nurse towards a patient in a hospital situation. If males are socialized to favor autonomy and independence and females to favor nurturance and caring, it was assumed that male subjects would rate a nurse as less supportive and competent if a nurse touched a patient. The results (based on reactions to photographs manipulating the level of physical contact that occurred between a nurse and a patient) were generally consistent with these predictions. While the subjects' sex moderated reactions to the nurse-initiated touch, there was an overall pattern for observers to react more favorably to the nurse who used touch compared to no touch in interacting with a patient. The results suggest that nurses and health professionals who use touch in interacting with patients may be judged in part by the attitudes of males and females about the use of touch.     

Segmentation of circular data

Circular data – data whose values lie in the interval [0,2π) – are important in a number of application areas. In some, there is a suspicion that a sequence of circular readings may contain two or more segments following different models. An analysis may then seek to decide whether there are multiple segments, and if so, to estimate the changepoints separating them. This paper presents an optimal method for segmenting sequences of data following the von Mises distribution. It is shown by example that the method is also successful in data following a distribution with much heavier tails.
