Using archival data, 12 independent variables pertaining to organizing strategy, organizing resources, and financial resources were used to predict the NLRB certification election success rates of national unions in three different time periods. The more than 50 unions participated in more than 75 percent of such elections. Relative to the hypothesized relationships, a mixed set of results was obtained. Possible explanations for these results, along with suggestions for more refined measurement procedures, are offered in terms of future research needs. Journalism advertorials, a form of outside lobbying by organized interests, are directed at members of the working press to influence the news they produce to create a favorable policy and public opinion environment in which organized interests can pursue their objectives. Political actors, including organized interests, adapt to changes in communication technology. Research has shown a precipitous decline in the number of advertorials in the two most prominent professional journalism periodicals. However, organized interests continue to care how they are portrayed in the press. We hypothesize that organized interests have adapted and now use journalist friendly Web sites to assist the working press. We examined the Web to see if 368 organized interests (classified into five types) that sponsored 2,510 advertorials between 1985 and 2000 had Web sites, and whether those sites contained Media Centers and nine other features that would serve journalists in the production of news stories. We found almost all organized interests had Web sites, most had Media Centers (economic organized interests utilized them more than other types), and organized interests with Media Centers provided more journalist-friendly elements than sites without Media Centers. We found parity among the five types of organized interests in terms the number of elements provided and their overall friendliness to journalists. We conclude that the organized interests migrated to the Web, contributing to a more level playing field among sectors of organized interests.  相似文献

The cement industry provides an interesting example of the impact of collective bargaining where management determines that it cannot afford a strike, yields to extreme union demands, but deludes itself that it can withstand the economic impact of unionism under such circumstances because almost all competitors are similarly situated and labor costs can be partially offset by automation. The small Cement, Lime, and Gypsum Workers Union won not only high wages and benefits, but imposed restrictive rules as severe as those in any industry. Eventually, however, foreign competition and economic realities forced the companies to revolt, and the union found that it could not sustain strikes. An ill-conceived merger broke up, an independent union was formed, and today unionism, once so strong, is weak and divided as management imposes or forces acceptance of its conditions. The story, while unique in many ways, resembles what has occurred in other industries with high fixed costs, militant unions, and the reluctance of management to sacrifice current gains for longer run needs. A principal problem in systems studies concerns the development of models that will be accepted and used by decision makers in organizations. Regression models derived from managers' past behavior offer promise in overcoming this problem for many repetitive types of decisions. Employing a simulated production planning environment, this paper discusses both the potential usefulness and limitations of such models for understanding and improving decision making in practical applications.  相似文献

One of the most important contributions of recent social problems theory is the insight that social problems are inherently political phenomena. Existing scholarship on this characteristic has not dealt systematically with (1) the degree of overt politicality of social issues, or (2) the dynamic element of this politicality. This paper first reviews recent literature in the “medicalization of deviant behavior,” and sugests that this literature illustrates how the political element of social problem phenomena can be suppressed and replaced with a seemingly apolitical and technical perspective. Then it is proposed that interpretive social problems theory might deal more adequately with this pattern by incorporating a continuum ranging from “open” to “closed” social problems and analyzing the dynamics of social problem “enclosure,” and that certain sorts of claims—cognitive as opposed to normative—are especially conducive to the depoliticization and enclosure of social problems.  相似文献

This paper discusses some of the substantive and methodological pitfalls that arise in the subjective evaluation of well-being. The discussion includes illustrative references to the empirical findings of the 1977 Edmonton Area Study. Issues discussed include (1) specific, domain, and global measures; (2) objective states and subjective perceptions; (3) micro and macro units of analysis; and (4) the problem of cultural relativism. It is concluded that it is not yet possible to delineate a simple set of social indicators for use by policy-makers and social planners. Accurate assessment of social well-being currently requires the study of demographic and objective states together with cognitive and evaluational responses and also requires assessment not only at the global ‘general satisfaction’ level but also at more specific levels of analysis.  相似文献
