Public Sociology: Working at the Interstices

The article examines recent debates surrounding public sociology in the context of a UK based Department of Applied Social Sciences. Three areas of work within the department form the focus of the article: violence against women and children; community-based oral history projects and health ethics teaching. The article draws on Micheal Burawoy’s typology comprising public, policy, professional and critical sociology, and argues that much of the work described in the case studies more often lies somewhere in between, in the interstices, rather than within one or other of the four types. The result is not without its tensions and dilemmas, some of which are identified and explored, notably those arising from attempts to appeal to diverse audiences and meet the sometimes conflicting expectations of each.

职务犯罪监察调查中的从宽处罚建议制度研究

从宽处罚建议制度是融合了实体规范与程序规范、兼顾了监察调查和刑事司法的综合性法律制度,具有巩固发展反腐败斗争压倒性胜利,实现纪法衔接、法法衔接等价值.对该制度的概括性规定是立法技术的有意为之,却给制度适用造成阻滞.从宽处罚建议具有影响后续量刑建议和司法判决的能力,但有赖于司法机关的全面审查和诉讼支持.监察机关是否提出从宽处罚建议取决于对案件整体情况的综合考量,可以采取从宽处罚建议书或者在起诉意见书中专列项的方式向司法机关提出从宽处罚建议.该制度设置的两个严格的审批程序可以弥补律师不能介入的缺憾.应当建立认罪越早从宽越多的激励机制和阶梯式量刑减让机制.     

校对论——兼与《辞海》"校对"条商兑

校对的本质属性是校误订讹.<辞海>(1979年版)、(1999年修订版)对校对的界定是片面的,用以指导实践是有害的.应将校对条释义为:"图书、报刊出版工作中的一个环节.根据原稿或定本核对校样,如果原稿等参照物有误,即使校样与其相符,也应一并订正,以保证出版物的质量."     

新世纪以来中国传记文学研究回顾

进入新世纪以来,中国传记文学研究在十几年中取得新的实绩,具体体现在：传记文学理论研究取得了重大进展,传记文学理论体系初步建立;传记文学研究中国际对话格局业已形成;传记文学研究队伍壮大,新人辈出;传记研究者对当代传记现状更加关注,力图产生导向作用。     

Do “protean” employees make better leaders? The answer is in the eye of the beholder

While the protean career (Hall, 1976, 2002) has been lauded for its advantages in helping individuals adapt to changing career contexts, it is not clear how this career orientation may impact how others perceive a person's leadership ability. In this study, we hypothesized that those with a protean career orientation would receive higher leadership ratings from subordinates and superiors, but lower leadership ratings from peers, in part based upon social comparison theory. Using structural equation modeling, our hypotheses regarding subordinates and peers were supported, but not with respect to superiors, who, along with peers, rated those with a protean career orientation lower in terms of transformational leadership as measured by the MLQ. We discuss potential reasons for these findings and the consequences for research and theory. Also, we examine the implications of this research for leadership development, workforce recruitment and retention, and possible generational significance.

管理者代理行为、公司过度投资与公司治理——基于企业生命周期视角的实证研究

通过建立企业生命周期新的划分指标,从企业发展的动态层面研究管理者代理行为与公司过度投资之间关系随企业生命周期的演变,并检验公司治理机制随企业生命周期的治理效果。结果表明,我国上市公司管理者代理行为随企业生命周期动态变化,其对公司过度投资的影响随企业生命周期发展不断减弱。不同公司治理机制的治理效果随企业生命周期也发生变化,其中董事长总经理兼任在成长阶段能够有效抑制公司过度投资,而独立董事在成熟阶段及大股东在衰退阶段均显著没有发挥应有的监督作用。成长阶段中的公司监事会能够对代理行为引致的过度投资起到显著的监督作用,而董事长总经理兼任则显著加剧代理行为引致的过度投资,成长阶段中管理层持股、成熟阶段中独立董事与外部机构持股以及衰退阶段中大股东均显著没有起到应有的治理作用。     

Playing safe: Media coverage of child sexual abuse prevention strategies

This paper examines the media coverage of preventing child sexual abuse. It draws on a content analysis of all press and TV news coverage about child sexual abuse that appeared in the UK during a complete 12-month period. The findings demonstrate that the bulk of the coverage was case-based, for example focusing on the Orkney case. There was very little opportunity for broader discussion of general issues of concern, including how sexual assaults against children might be prevented. The coverage of ‘prevention’ which did exist drew on a very narrow range of debates and was disproportionately concerned with abuse outside the home (abductions by strangers, or abuse within institutions such as schools or children's homes). Discussions about prevention were dominated by reactive news stories generated by particular ‘scandals’. The coverage was also largely drawn from a small constituency of official source agencies (such as government officials, court proceedings and police statements). There were few attempts to address the broader social conditions which might facilitate or inhibit sexual violence or to examine explicitly political analyses of the problem. The paper argues for a more diverse discussion about ways of preventing sexual violence against children, especially assaults by fathers, uncles, brothers and friends of the family. This demands close attention to the ways in which the mass media operate, as well as the priorities of source agencies. The paper points to factors within news production practices which both obstruct and facilitate debate about prevention and concludes by suggesting strategies to promote this issue as a vital part of the public agenda.
