This article explores how suburban middle‐class adolescents use a spatial metaphor, “bubble,” as a symbolic boundary. The narratives about the bubble, collected through focus group discussions and ethnographic observations, show consensus among the teenagers about the socioeconomic and cultural superiority of the community, but they also reveal opposing views on its moral status. I also find that the teens use the same metaphor to draw moral distinctions among their peers, based on whether they align their identity with the norms and values the bubble symbolizes. I argue that the adolescents living in this community develop a strong place identity, even when they identify flaws with it, because their mundane references to the bubble provide them with an opportunity to critically examine the implication of their middle‐class status. 相似文献

Summary We studied the relationship between the diurnal nectar secretion pattern of flowers ofCayratia japonica and insect visiting patterns to these flowers. Flower morphology ofC. japonica changed greatly for about 12 hours after flower-opening and the maximum duration of nectar secretion was 2 days. The nectar
volume peaked at 11∶00 and 15∶00, and declined at night and at 13∶00 regardless of time elapsed after flower-opening. The
nectar volume at the two peaks was, on average, 0.25 μl on bagged inflorescences and 0.1μl on unbagged inflorescences (both,
sugar concentration=60%). The flower secreted nectar compensatory when the nectar was removed. This means that insects consume
more nectar than the difference of nectar volume between bagged and unbagged flowers.
Apis cerana is a primary visitor of this flower, and was the only species for which we confirmed pollen on the body, among many species
of flower visiting insects to this flower.Apis cerana visited intensively at the two peaks of nectar secretion. Visits of the other insects were rather constant or intensive only
when there was no nectar secretion. Thus flowers ofC. japonica with morphologically unprotected nectaries may increase likelihood that their nectar is used by certain pollinators, by controlling

Summary Optimal clutch size of the chestnut gall-wasp,Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae), was examined in galls on wild and resistant chestnut trees in 1988 and 1989. The rate
of escape success of newly-emerged adults from galls was an average of 60%, irrespective of cell numbers per gall. Dry mass
per cell of a gall (as an index of nutritive condition) decreased with increasing cell number per gall, but was proportional
to the mean number of mature eggs of new adults per gall. The number of cells per gall that occurred most frequently did not
agree with that attained by the maximum survival rate from young larva to adult emergence of the gall-wasp. This discrepancy
was examined from the viewpoint of three factors: 1) quality of offspring, 2) defensive response of the host plant causing
mortality of the gall-wasp before cell formation, and 3) fitness per gall vs. fitness per egg. It is concluded that the third
factor is most likely to be the one best in explaining the discrepancy. 相似文献

Among wild plants ofHydrangea serrata (Hydrangeaceae) in Japan, there are sweet plants whose leave contain a kind of isocoumarin, phyllodulcin, which happens to
be 350 times as sweet as sucrose to the human tongue. In a primary beech forest in Ashu, Kyoto, the spatial distribution of
sweet plants and temporal and the spatial distribution of phyllodulcin within and among plants were investigated using a high
performance liquid chromatograph. The distribution of sweet plants was confined within a valley and was parapatric with non-sweet
plants. A plant's characteristic phyllodulcin accumulation did not change, even when transplanted into the different habitats.
The phyllodulcin content of the sweet plants varied greatly among plants, and the population mean peaked in July when the
plants flowered. Within a plant, phyllodulcin content was elevated by partial defoliation. We examined the possible effect
of phyllodulcin on herbivory by a specialist leafmining herbivore,Antispila hydrangifoliella (Lepidoptera: Heliozelidae). We transplanted sweet and nonsweet plants reciprocally between their original habitats, excluded
attacks by parasitoids, and compared performance of the leafminer. Leafminer colonization and larval survivorship on transplanted
andin situ plants was not significantly different between sites. The fact that accumulation of phyllodulcin did not augment a defensive
function, at least against herbivory by the leafminer, and the sporadic distribution of phyllodulcin-accumulating plants,
suggest that the genotypes synthesizing phyllodulcin emerged independently at separate localities by mutation, and that the
genotypes are almost adaptively neutral in defence against the specialist herbivore. 相似文献

The relationship between geographical accessibility to gambling venues and the prevalence of pathological gambling is still unknown. This study aimed to reveal this relationship in Japan as well as its variation by subpopulation. A cross-sectional study was conducted, based on an original web-based survey to understand the level of pathological gambling depending on accessibility to pachinko parlours. Pathological gamblers were measured using the Japanese version of the South Oaks Gambling Screen. Accessibility to gambling venues was defined as the number of pachinko parlours within a 1.5 km radius from home. Moreover, the study adopted the instrumental variable approach to solve the potential endogeneity problem. The results showed that the accessibility was not significantly associated with pathological gambling in general, but that the effects of accessibility varied by subpopulation. Accessibility was significantly and positively correlated with pathological gambling for men and people in low-income areas, but this was not so for women and people in high-income areas. The study’s findings show the importance of the neighbourhood environment and could help in implementing more effective interventions for pathological gamblers. 相似文献

In this article, we apply our latest thinking on knowledge to provide insights on how to reconceptualize strategy to cope with a VUCA world, epitomized recently by COVID-19. We demonstrate that business leaders must draw on phronesis, or practical wisdom, for strategy to become more future-oriented, society-focused, dynamic, and human-centric. Using in-depth case studies, we show how companies will survive in the long run if they start with a moral purpose, and end by offering value to customers, contributing to society, living in harmony with nature, and creating a new and better future. We came up with six practices that enable business leaders to create new and better futures, citing evidences from neuroscience. We conclude that humans should be at the center of strategy, driving future-making with the help of digital-led automation. Reconceptualizing strategy based on this “inside-out” approach, the reward to the company is resilience, longevity, and sustainability. 相似文献

Given a simple, undirected graph G=(V,E) and a weight function w:E→ℤ+, we consider the problem of orienting all edges in E so that the maximum weighted outdegree among all vertices is minimized. It has previously been shown that the unweighted
version of the problem is solvable in polynomial time while the weighted version is (weakly) NP-hard. In this paper, we strengthen
these results as follows: (1) We prove that the weighted version is strongly NP-hard even if all edge weights belong to the
set {1,k}, where k is any fixed integer greater than or equal to 2, and that there exists no pseudo-polynomial time approximation algorithm
for this problem whose approximation ratio is smaller than (1+1/k) unless P = NP; (2) we present a new polynomial-time algorithm that approximates the general version of the problem within
a ratio of (2−1/k), where k is the maximum weight of an edge in G; (3) we show how to approximate the special case in which all edge weights belong to {1,k} within a ratio of 3/2 for k=2 (note that this matches the inapproximability bound above), and (2−2/(k+1)) for any k≥3, respectively, in polynomial time. 相似文献

本文着重考察齐美尔个性观在其生命哲学中的展开。以个性观在德国思想史中的演变为线索,追溯了自文艺复兴经十八世纪启蒙时代,再到十九世纪浪漫主义兴起之后的一系列重要变化,集中讨论了尼采--作为生命哲学的最初阐发者--的贵族理论是如何影响齐美尔的。尼采笔下备受推崇的个体,在与世界整体相剥离之后,失去作为类存在的归宿感,这也是齐美尔探讨现代个性如何持存的起点。齐美尔在现代资本主义劳动分工、艺术创作之形式的转变以及个体生命时间的展开(尤其是死亡的意义)等不同的层次上,对以生命为立足点寻求个体自我的统一作了深入论述。文章最后回应了韦伯和卢卡奇对齐美尔的批评,笔者认为两者分别从理性主义和马克思的历史唯物主义传统反思了齐美尔的生命哲学。 相似文献
