As one who came early and has stayed late at the sociological party, I thought it would be appropriate to provide a brief inventory of my sins over more than 40 years as a sociologist of culture and religion. Where culture is concerned, my own changing perspectives parallel developments in the field itself, though I also confess to a few doubts and suspicions regarding culture's current revival. Turning to religion, I identify myself with both Durkheim and Weber if only as another scholar in the field who is religiously unmusical. I confess to wondering why so many of my colleagues have paid so little attention to religion. And having raised the question, I go on to suggest several answers and rebut all but the last with materials drawn from a recently completed study of world religions and worldly politics in some 14 countries around the globe. 相似文献

Based on Brickley’s (2003) call for research on the CEO/turnover relation, we examine determinants of CEO age at succession.
Utilizing the similarity–attraction paradigm, we propose that board members will select new CEOs that are similar to their
own age. We find a strong positive relation between successor CEO age and average board member age. Thus, the similarity–attraction
paradigm seems to play a role in board of director selection of CEO successors. However, we also propose that poor prior performance
may mitigate similarity–attraction. Our results are also consistent with this hypothesis because we find no relation between
successor CEO and board age following poor prior performance. Finally, the hiring of an age-similar CEO does not reduce the
companies’ subsequent financial performance and may even have a slightly positive impact on it. 相似文献

We show that a voting scheme suggested by Lewis Carroll can be impractical in that it can be computationally prohibitive (specifically, NP-hard) to determine whether any particular candidate has won an election. This article focuses on the connection between the religious faith of employees and their relationships with employers. There are two models for how religionists understand their role in the world: they can either try to model behavior not common in a secular world or infiltrate the structures of society in the hope of bringing about social change. Most employees tend to be infiltrators. Further, employees tend to internalize the values of their employers. But it may well be that the moral and religious beliefs of employees can benefit employers by providing the latter with access to different perspectives. In particular, the long-range perspective common to religionists may be helpful to corporations that tend to focus on short-term considerations. 相似文献

This article discusses how the control systems for multinational subsidiary managers are affected by national variables such as political risk, financial/monetary policies and relative cultural distance. These environmental factors are reviewed and synthesized into a three-dimensional model to help a manager diagnose these influences and choose the appropriate control system. This model illustrates how the salience of input control increases as multinational entities increasingly compete globally in nations with unstable financial/monetary policies, significant government restrictions and high cultural distance. Incorporation of Pharmacokinetics in Noncancer Risk Assessment: Example with Chloropentafluorobenzene 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Noncancer risk assessment traditionally relies on applied dose measures, such as concentration in inhaled air or in drinking water, to characterize no-effect levels or low-effect levels in animal experiments. Safety factors are then incorporated to address the uncertainties associated with extrapolating across species, dose levels, and routes of exposure, as well as to account for the potential impact of variability of human response. A risk assessment for chloropentafluorobenzene (CPFB) was performed in which a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model was employed to calculate an internal measure of effective tissue dose appropriate to each toxic endpoint. The model accurately describes the kinetics of CPFB in both rodents and primates. The model calculations of internal dose at the no-effect and low-effect levels in animals were compared with those calculated for potential human exposure scenarios. These calculations were then used in place of default interspecies and route-to-route safety factors to determine safe human exposure conditions. Estimates of the impact of model parameter uncertainty, as estimated by a Monte Carlo technique, also were incorporated into the assessment. The approach used for CPFB is recommended as a general methodology for noncancer risk assessment whenever the necessary pharmacokinetic data can be obtained. 相似文献

Should HIV/AIDS testing be required for health care workers and patients? This study compared the perceptions of 64 health care professionals and 97 nursing students on mandatory HIV testing, the risk of accidental infection, the appropriate industry response to infection, and the placement of costs. Significant differences were found between the two groups. While health care professionals favored testing for patients, students favored mandatory testing for both health care workers and patients. Students also viewed the risk of HIV/AIDS infection by a patient as significantly higher than did health care workers. Overall younger respondents tended to favor mandatory testing and also thought that hospitals should bear the cost. 相似文献
