Workplaces are becoming increasingly multicultural and therefore, include a large variety of employees from more than one ethnicity, nationality, religious and/or cultural background. In the context of this new global economy, Canadian workplace structure and composition has also permanently changed. Consequently, the primary purpose of this project was to explore occupational stress, mental health and satisfaction (life, job, relationship) as experienced by immigrant individuals attempting to achieve integration into Canadian workplaces. In order to address this research aim, responses of Canadian born participants (N?=?42) were compared to those of non-Canadian born participants (N?=?42) with respect to a series of questionnaires addressing the variables of interest. Our results suggested that, with the exception of self-reported symptoms of somatization and paranoia, non-Canadian born workers in the fields of education, healthcare and/or social work report more similarities than differences when compared to the responses of Canadian born workers. In general, the findings of this study suggested positive outcomes for non-Canadian born professionals who immigrate into Canada under the economic category. 相似文献

This paper examines the disparate social well-being outcomes children experience across states in the United States. The paper seeks to extend the study of child social well-being by examining the extent to which state characteristics influence aggregate child social well-being outcomes. The results indicate that socioeconomic and population characteristics of states influence the magnitude of aggregate child social well-being deficits. It is argued that the disparities in child social well-being outcomes for children across states should be taken into consideration in the current welfare reform climate. Because states have gained greater control over programs that assist the poorest and most vulnerable families and children, states with large child social well-being deficits will likely experience even larger deficits as many state TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) policies and practices do not adequately support poor families. 相似文献

Although extensive research has found a strong relationship between poor family functioning and depression, previous research has not examined this relationship among low-income Latinos. In this study, we examined how family functioning may be associated with depression in a sample of low-income Latino couples. In addition, we examined how acculturative stress moderates the relationship between family functioning and depression. Our results indicate that the relationship between family functioning and depression is stronger in women and that acculturative stress moderates this relationship in women. Probing this interaction indicates that women who reported high acculturative stress coupled with poor family functioning experienced more depression. Clinical implications are discussed. 相似文献

We present a new approach to regression function estimation in which a non-parametric regression estimator is guided by a parametric pilot estimate with the aim of reducing the bias. New classes of parametrically guided kernel weighted local polynomial estimators are introduced and formulae for asymptotic expectation and variance, hence approximated mean squared error and mean integrated squared error, are derived. It is shown that the new classes of estimators have the very same large sample variance as the estimators in the standard non-parametric setting, while there is substantial room for reducing the bias if the chosen parametric pilot function belongs to a wide neighbourhood around the true regression line. The sample selection bias problem occurs when the outcome of interest is only observed according to some selection rule, where there is a dependence structure between the outcome and the selection rule. In a pioneering work, J. Heckman proposed a sample selection model based on a bivariate normal distribution for dealing with this problem. Due to the non-robustness of the normal distribution, many alternatives have been introduced in the literature by assuming extensions of the normal distribution like the Student-t and skew-normal models. One common limitation of the existent sample selection models is that they require a transformation of the outcome of interest, which is common -valued, such as income and wage. With this, data are analyzed on a non-original scale which complicates the interpretation of the parameters. In this paper, we propose a sample selection model based on the bivariate Birnbaum–Saunders distribution, which has the same number of parameters that the classical Heckman model. Further, our associated outcome equation is -valued. We discuss estimation by maximum likelihood and present some Monte Carlo simulation studies. An empirical application to the ambulatory expenditures data from the 2001 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey is presented. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: This paper provides a thoretical and empirical evaluation of unions’effects on innovative activity, focussing on institutional details and country-specific factors. We represent results of an econometric investigation for Germany using data at the industry and establishment level. In contrast to US studies, no statistically significant negative influence of unions on innovative activity shows up from industry-level data. Establishment-level data, however, indicate that the presence of a works council is positive for R & D if union density is not “too high”. Due to the low demand for highly educated workers in rural areas, high‐achieving rural students have been portrayed as having to pick between staying close to home and facing limited economic opportunities or leaving to pursue higher education and socioeconomic advancement. But what of those who want both—college degree and return to rural living? Comparing the experiences of rural graduates who returned to rural locales with those who out‐migrated and nonrural graduates across one predominantly rural state, this study explores how social capital matters in the residential decision‐making process. Proximity to work and family were the primary factors determining adult residence. Sense of place—but not attachment to a specific community—also mattered, especially for rural graduates. Family, school, and community social capital were more likely to play a role in career development for rural students, as career aspirations during adolescence followed by career‐driven college choices created pathways for rural return. Findings underscore the importance of analyzing rural return from a regional lens, as respondents reframed lifestyle elements researchers tend to portray as mutually exclusive—rural lifestyle, proximity to family, and professional career—as compatible by employing broad and flexible definitions of proximity and place. 相似文献
