Seeing the Case Clearly: File‐Work,Material Mediation,and Visualizing Practices in a Dutch Criminal Court

In Dutch criminal courts, judges and their assisting clerks spend significant amounts of time doing file‐work in preparation for the court hearing: a practice they often call “visualizing the case.” This practice is distributed over clerks and judges and materially mediated: the legal case file enters into face‐to‐file interaction as both a text and a material object. This article aims to unpack what techniques clerks and judges draw on in order to come to “see the case clearly,” while at the same time it elaborates on the renegotiations of these largely paper‐based practices when court workers are confronted with the digitization of case files.     

Environmental thought and ecopoetics in the cultures of post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe

This article discusses the rise of an environmental awareness of place in post-socialist cultures as a reaction to decades-long authoritarian practices that had shaped and informed human beings’ relation with natural space. Drawing on examples of fiction and non-fiction from Poland and Ukraine (Andrzej Stasiuk, Iurii Andrukhovych, Olga Tokarczuk, and Halyna Pohutiak), this article focuses on the ecocritical and environmentally transformative potential of several representative geographically conscious narratives. To examine such emergent readings of place, the article discusses the development of the narrative paradigms of (bio)regionalism and localism, which, on the one hand, represent alternative ways of conceptualizing the natural environment and, on the other, serve as reactions to earlier socialist constructions of centralist geographies and homogeneous national spaces.     

ASYMPTOTIC TESTS FOR GROWTH CURVE MODELS WITH AUTOREGRESSIVE ERRORS

This paper presents the limit distribution (as the number of time points increase) for the score vector of a growth curve model assuming both stationary and explosive autoregressive (A.R.) errors. Limit distributions of the score statistic and the likelihood-ratio statistic for testing composite hypotheses about the regression parameters of several growth curves, when the autocorrelation parameters are treated as nuisance parameters, are presented.     

The Re-Creation Of Gender In A Male Workplace

This paper draws on participant observation in a male-dominated blue-collar job to understand how the concepts of masculinity and femininity are re-created through coworker interactions on the shopfloor and the effect of this on women. Men typecast women in these jobs as either feminine or unfeminine and treated them differently, but in both cases, women's presence was useful for defining–and in the case of sex-role appropriate women–enforcing masculinity. Such treatment isolated women from the on-going work culture and constrained them to certain behaviors.     

Agricultural Restructuring and the Spatial Dynamics of U.S. Women's Employment in the 1970s1

Abstract The spatial rearrangement of women agricultural workers' employment across 380 labor market areas is examined during the period of agricultural transformation in the 1970s. Labor market maps of women's employment changes show regional declines and increases in accord with the dynamics of agricultural industrialization. Case studies selected from the maps demonstrate the gender-specific and locality-specific ramifications of these transformations.     

Individualism and conformity in the 1950s vs. the 1980s

If the 1950s are remembered for conformity, the 1960s for rebellious individualism, and the 1970s for narcissistic individualism, images of the 1980s contain an ambiguous mixture of individualism and conformity, with similarities to the 1950s. But if the 1980s resemble the 1950s in some respects, are portraits of individualism and conformity in the later decade nevertheless different from their earlier incarnations? A comparative analysis of best-selling self-help books in the 1950s and the 1980s reveals the following changes: from “maturity” as a desirable end to an ever-changing self; from determinism about the self to antideterminism and constructionism; from institutional constraints and joys to interpersonal ones. These changes reflect the incorporation of ideas from the counterculture of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and may also stem from perceptions of a simultaneous increase in structural determinism and individual empowerment.
