Today marriage-migration remains the dominant form of naturalization in Italy and Greece, even for women from such high-income countries as the USA. Pilot studies of intra-OECD female migrants to Southern Europe show that the majority of them marry local men, consider their matrimony a mistake, and feel isolated. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive knowledge about dynamics of their socio-cultural integration or expat nationalism (although scholarship generally acknowledges a strong relationship between these two processes). Based on narrative-biographic interviews with 60 Anglophone female expatriates married to Italian and Greek men, our study explores the women's negotiation of culture within the context of their Italian and Greek families, and looks at emerging challenges for their integration. We show that these women are nationalistic and culturally stringent actors, who often find it extremely difficult fully to learn and integrate to the new cultures of Southern Europe. 相似文献

Reflections on diaspora and soft power: community building among female US expats in Southern Europe

ABSTRACTIlluminated by life stories of American women in Italy and Greece, our work examines a complex relationship between expatriate collectivity and soft power agency. The data were collected from in-depth interviews with 60 US nationals who live in Italy and Greece. Our findings show that these women shape as a strong diasporic collectivity through activities of ecological civic engagement, which, however, do not result in a successful exercise of soft power. The isolationist nature of their collectivity causes a number of diasporic mistakes and turns their chosen community project into a weak resource for soft power, a translation of which remains highly problematic. The basic mistakes that such expats make while exercising soft power are misunderstanding of the notions of community and its main building tool (civic engagement) as well as overall inability to learn the new culture quickly. 相似文献

Performance of the firm depends on its structural dimensions: capital structure, ownership structure and corporate governance.
Their interactions are known as corporate financial architecture according to S. Myers. In this paper we analyze financial
architecture which is a mix of ownership structure, capital structure, control and board’s composition, and therefore, provides
the given framework for improving corporate performance. We contribute to the literature by different attributes of our study.
In contrast to most empirical papers on performance, we develop integrated rather than segmented approach combining the intrinsic
components of corporate financial design in one research model. We introduce new variable to capture the structure of ownership
for the purpose of performance analysis. Our third contribution is based on comparative analysis of the influence of financial
architecture over corporate performance in rather different capital market environment: developed European and emerging (developing)
capital market’s countries. We start with a classic empirical model of the impact of ownership structure, capital structure
and other components of financial architecture on the corporate performance. Further we verify the validity of exogenous nature
of key variables of the classic model when applying it to companies in developed and emerging market environment. Our results
could have some important policy implications for the firms in normal economic environment as well as in the period of global
economic crisis. We found that the higher proportion of related ownership which indicates investors with significant voting
power and the board’s composition affect firm performance positively. The related shareholders and independent directors seem
to add more value to firms while the impact of government ownership differs depending on the country. The emerging market’s
sample versus the one from developed countries proves the stronger influence of corporate financial architecture over performance. 相似文献

This article reviews the current situation of ICTs in Africa and assesses the degree of proliferation of new technologies around the continent. Particular attention is paid to exploring the problem of the digital divide and specifying the key factors that impede the spread of ICT progress on the continent. There are several realistic ways in which African nations may benefit from ICT, including immediate and tangible results in medicine, education and economic development. The authors set forth a number of recommendations on bridging the infrastructure and knowledge gap. They also evaluate the efficiency of regional initiatives and international assistance programmes to Africa for enhancing the ICT sector and study the phenomenon of cultural imperialism in this respect. In conclusion, the authors speculate on the future of ICT in Africa and on the continent's ability to bridge the development gap with the help of new technologies. 相似文献

Abstract‘Save Rosia Montana’ is an emblematic socio-ecological movement in post-communist Romania. It started in 2000 as a local reaction against what was projected to be the largest open-cast gold mine in Europe; it has gradually grown into a national movement with global networking. Activists have been consistently accused of acting under the impulse of an emotional luggage which could function as an impediment to understanding the ‘real’ issue, that of Romania's development. While the corporation claims to present the ‘real’ story articulated in the supposedly objective discourse of rational science, the choice to take a stance out of other beliefs has been demonized as emotional. This article will make a critical discourse analysis of corporate texts and Rosieni's testimonies to highlight what appears as ‘legitimate’ versus ‘illegitimate’ discourse, how some phrases are presented as self-evident rationales while others are dismissed as inappropriate or ‘emotional’. Rosieni have created visibilities for new things, objects, languages, and projections that have been downplayed by the post-communist political context. The conflict is not just over cognitive aspects or valuation languages but also over how one is allowed to feel, what one is allowed to enjoy (doing), how is one supposed to live (spend time), what Ranciere calls the ‘distribution of the sensible’. 相似文献

We introduce the congruence indicators WFCA(·) and SFCA(·) corresponding to fuzzy congruence axioms WFCA and SFCA. These indicators measure the degree to which a fuzzy choice function verifies the axioms WFCA and SFCA, respectively. The main result of the paper establishes for a given choice function the relationship between its congruence
indicators and some rationality conditions. One obtains a fuzzy counterpart of the well-known Arrow–Sen theorem in crisp choice

European Union (EU) enlargement has seen 10 new member states (NMS) adopt the full range of EU policies. Within this, the rural development arm of the Common Agricultural Policy offers particular points of interest. Member states chose from an extensive list of policy measures developed within the EU15 and intended, in particular, to operationalise the concept of rural multifunctionality within the ongoing CAP reform process. This paper identifies the rural development policy choices made by the eight central and eastern European NMS and develops a taxonomy to ascertain the extent to which the NMS are directing public funds to promote multifunctionality. A number of factors are then identified as helping to influence the policy choices made across countries. 相似文献
