In 2004, we conducted a nationwide dual frame survey of landlineand cell phone numbers to evaluate the feasibility of includingcell phone numbers in a random digit dial telephone survey.Households with both landline and cell phones were eligiblefor selection in both samples. This article describes several features included in a CaliforniaHealth Interview Survey cell phone pilot study that differ fromearlier cell phone surveys conducted in the United States. Onedifference is that the study used a screening design and onlyadults living in cell-only households were interviewed. Mostof the previous studies used dual frame designs. Another differencewas the development and implementation of a within-householdadult sampling procedure to cover adults when cell phones wereshared in the household. The study was also intended to determineif conducting a cell phone interview of the same scope and lengthas a regular telephone interview was feasible. Most previoussurveys were focused on cell phone topics and were shorter thanthe comparable landline surveys. We then explore some interestingproblems that arise in weighting a cell phone survey using ascreening design. We conclude with a discussion of planninga new cell phone survey in 2007 that incorporates findings fromthis study. 相似文献

This study addresses three questions about the population of children and families served in the highest level of care in the child welfare system in New York State residential treatment centers (RTCs): (1) How prevalent are emotional and behavioral problems in the youth entering RTCs? (2) Has the proportion of youth with such problems increased compared to 10 years ago? (3) Are there identifiable subgroups of youth entering RTCs? One-fourth of RTC admissions in fiscal year 2001 were randomly selected from a representative sample of 16 RTCs. The study completed a standardized data collection instrument based on a review of agency records, and included information that was known at the time each child was admitted. The results show significant increases compared to t10 years earlier in the proportion of youth with mental health problems and juvenile justice backgrounds. The findings suggest that youth who traditionally have been served by other systems of care are now being served in the child welfare system. The increased treatment needs of these youth and the heterogeneity of the RTC population have important implications for policies, programs, and practice. 相似文献

Americans do not know what percentage of the nation's residentsare whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and American Indians.Using the 2000 General Social Survey, I find that respondentsof all races underestimate the percentages of whites and overestimatethe percentages of racial/ethnic minority groups and multiracialAmericans in the United States; however, they perceive theirlocal communities quite differently. As a first step towardunderstanding this discrepancy, I test whether individualslocal surroundings serve as a source of information for theirpictures of the United States. I examine the relationship between"objective" data and respondents subjective perceptionsof where they live, and compare their respective effects onAmericans perceptions of the nation. Multivariate multilevelanalyses show that respondents perceptions of differentracial group sizes in their communities are the strongest predictorsof innumeracy at the national level, while "objective" racialcontext measured at the local level has less of an effect. Thesefindings have important implications for research on racialcontext, which assumes that census numbers for respondentslocales are good proxies for their perceptions of the size ofracial/ethnic groups in their communities. Furthermore, thesefindings suggest that scholars need to start thinking aboutwhy whites and non-whites have similar "big pictures" of thenation, why their "little pictures" vary a great deal, and whythe motivations for over- and underestimation may differ byracial/ethnic group. 相似文献

Jointly and separately, Waksberg and Mitofsky wereinstrumental in the development of many innovative methods andapplications. This article examines the formation of occupational identity in a nursing program. The normative and ideological dimensions
of this process are revealed in the program’s goals and the views of educators and students through qualitative data from
observations and 30 in-depth interviews. Educators seek to socialize students toward professionalism to raise the occupation’s
status by emphasizing the scientific and technical basis of nursing. Yet students uphold a gendered discourse by identifying
a normative dimension of caring as central to their occupational identity. The dilemma between professionalism and caring
is reconciled as students construct an occupational identity based on “educated caring,” where these two dimensions are equally
valuable and significant.

Drawing on interviews with twenty-five mostly white, educated, work-force experienced and class-privileged mothers, this paper
explores how these women construct the lactating body as a carefully managed site and breast-feeding as a project—a task to
be researched, planned, implemented, and assessed, with reliance on expert knowledge, professional advice, and consumption.
The framing of breast-feeding as a project contrasts with the emphases on pleasure, embodied subjectivity, relationality,
and empowerment that characterizes much of the recent breast-feeding literature across the humanities and social sciences.
I argue that the project frame sheds light on the amount of work and self-discipline involved in compliance with broader middle-class
mothering standards set in the consumerist, technological, medicalized, and professionalized contexts that shape parenting
in late capitalist America.

One essential dilemma for modern clinical social work involves the relationship between the processes taking place inside
the self and the social, cultural, and political developments affecting a person from the outside. The group-analysis approach
focuses on four levels of relationships and communication within the group, among others a primordial level of shared myths,
archetypical images, and the collective unconscious as an important component of psychotherapy. This article describes group-analysis
therapy with women, analyzing a therapeutic process that used social myths to explore the formative institutionalization processes
participants had undergone, thereby expanding themselves, growing, and changing.

This study examined the microinteractions of pedestrians in Japan and in the United States as they walked past a confederate.
Specifically, the effects of culture, condition (avoid, look-only, and look plus smile) and sex of confederate on glances,
smiles, nods, and greetings by passing pedestrians were examined in a field study on over 1000 participants. The hypotheses
of (1) lower responsiveness in Japanese pedestrians than in American pedestrians and (2) increased responsiveness as a function
of condition were supported in a series of log-linear analyses of pedestrian glances, smiles, nods, and greetings. Both of
these main effects were, however, qualified by Culture X Condition interactions on smiles, nods, and greetings, with the large
condition effects present in the American pedestrians, but absent in the Japanese pedestrians. The results are discussed in
terms of the functions of glances, smiles, nods, and greetings in these brief encounters and how differing cultural norms
affect Japanese and American responsiveness. Finally, the limitations of this study and the broader utility of this research
paradigm are discussed.

Two studies examined the relationships among injunctive norms and college student gambling. In study 1 we evaluated the accuracy
of perceptions of other students’ approval of gambling and the relationship between perceived approval and gambling behavior.
In study 2 we evaluated gambling behavior as a function of perceptions of approval of other students, friends, and family.
In study 1, which included 2524 college students, perceptions of other students’ approval of gambling were found to be overestimated
and were negatively associated with gambling behavior. The results of study 2, which included 565 college students, replicated the findings of
study 1 and revealed positive associations between gambling behavior and perceived approval of friends and family. Results highlight the complexity of
injunctive norms and the importance of considering the reference group (e.g., peers, friends, family members) in their evaluation.
Results also encourage caution in considering the incorporation of injunctive norms in prevention and intervention approaches. 相似文献
