Like much of the industrialised world, Australia's population is ageing, the implications of which are twofold: increasing demand for publicly funded services and a decline in the supply of prime working‐age people. In grappling with the challenges of a diminishing workforce, the Australian Government is currently relying on its migration programs to provide both the much‐needed labour and skills for the resource boom and also to stimulate the economy through population growth. However, there may be another, not yet fully considered solution to the upcoming demographic problem. This paper investigates how the grandchildren of the baby boomers, termed here the Thank God You're Here generation (Gen TGYH), might impact on Australia's predicted workforce shortage. This generation of workers will enter the labour force as the last of the baby boomers reach retirement age, and will not only be bigger in size than preceding generations (Y, X and Baby Boomers), but also potentially be better educated than the retiring generation. This paper will also canvas the opportunities for both Gen TGYH and employers as well as the challenges for policymakers and governments in maximising the opportunity provided by this generation in the Australian economy. 相似文献

Abstract Objective: To examine correlates of compensatory weight control behaviors among women in transition between adolescence and adulthood. Participants: The authors recruited a sample of undergraduate women (N = 759) at a large northwestern university during the 2009–2010 academic year. Methods: Logistic regression was used to assess relations among childhood abuse, psychosocial functioning, adult dating relationship factors, and women's endorsement of compensatory weight control behaviors. Results: The final model reliably distinguished between participants who endorsed versus denied use of compensatory behaviors (χ2[5, N = 747] = 36.37, p < .001), with global psychosocial functioning and relationship avoidance accounting for the most variance. Conclusions: These findings illustrate the importance of considering childhood abuse histories and adult relationships while assessing young women's compensatory weight control behaviors. 相似文献

This article discusses the use of contemporary film in social work education, including the theoretical rationale for the inclusion of film from the perspective of narrative and adult learning theory as well as the application of the case method to the use of film. The student viewpoint and perspective is provided through the results of an exploratory research study with 109 Baccalaureate social work students who completed a survey questionnaire following a classroom activity involving a contemporary film. Analysis of the quantitative data and qualitative comments indicates that students believe that film is a beneficial adjunct to textbook and lecture content. 相似文献

Role sequencing refers to the ordering of social roles. According to the normative order hypothesis, adults who follow a certain sequencing of their social roles will be better adjusted than their peers who follow other life course patterns. The normative order is defined as first entering the paid labor force, getting married, and later having children. This study tests this hypothesis by analyzing retrospective life history data from three subsamples of adults who completed the 1987--1988 National Survey of Families and Households: (1) married, working parents; (2) divorced, working parents; and (3) married, unemployed parents. The findings indicate significant race/ethnic (black/white), gender, and cohort differences in the type of role sequencing patterns that are conducive to positive mental health. For example, African Americans who work first, then have children, and later get married report better mental health than their peers who followed the normative order White men and women seem to benefit from following the normative course of role transitions. Among women, however, the psychological benefits of following typical life course patterns are especially evident among those born during the baby boom. 相似文献

Clearly, the necessary changes in the law and culture will not come easily or quickly. But, transcending all forms of these
labor market segments is a set of concerns that arguably should spur a search for common ground between labor and management.
The proliferation of automated technologies, together with the continuing impact of foreign competition with cheap labor markets,
has led some to predict that, over the next quarter century, we will witness the elimination of the blue-collar, mass assembly-line
worker from the production process.14
Moreover, the theory that those losing jobs in the manufacturing sector will be generally absorbed into the service sector
is losing currency as it is becoming clear that service jobs are, themselves, not invulnerable either to offshore outsourcing
(e.g., telephone operators, data processors) or to automated technology (e.g., bank tellers, office secretaries).
Nor is it realistic to expect the new “knowledge sector” to absorb more than a fraction of the unemployed and underemployed
casualties of this transformation. As a result, the widening gap between the haves and have nots will only continue to grow.
As the trend accelerates, certain possibilities for a labor-management accommodation emerge. For one thing, although corporations
may be enjoying short-term gains from present wage stagnation, downsizing, outsourcing, and casting off of permanent employees,
the longer term effects include a work force with considerably diminished consumer purchasing power. In some industries, corporations
are already acknowledging the adverse effects of this trend.
Furthermore, as employers are contributing into pension funds on behalf of fewer and fewer “employees,” the forced savings
pool that has for many years constituted a primary financing source of capital investments in our economy, will gradually
be depleted.15
At the same time as employers are coming face to face with the disadvantages of the union-free environment they have so long
sought, employers are also rediscovering the contributions to productivity, quality, and efficiency that can be gained from
a truly empowered work force with an independent voice in the workplace. All of this should lead an enlightened management
to place less currency on resisting unionization and other legitimate forms of independent employee representation, and to
join labor in advocating strong labor standards and effective labor law for all four of the labor market segments that exist
today and will exist tomorrow.

Converse's definition of ideological contraint is expanded to provide for various respondent identified ideological dimensions rather than an all encompassing liberal-conservative dimension. Using this redefinition a sample of adults is shown to have high levels of ideological constraint. Ideological constraint is shown to vary with the degree of cognitive complexity and the degree of preference evaluability. The latter is a new concept that suggests that some issues will be easier for a respondent to demonstrate constraint on depending upon the availability and applicability of preference criteria. Salience is also shown to have a positive relationship with ideological constraint, but only when preference evaluability is high. 相似文献
