Weibull lagged effect step-stress model with competing risks

In many survival analysis studies, failure can come from one of several competing risks. Additionally, where survival times are lengthy, researchers can increase stress levels to cause units to fail faster. One type of accelerated testing is a step-stress test where the increase is presented in quantum jumps at predetermined time points. If the impact of the increase is not immediately attained, an interim lag period is modeled. In this article, we propose a two-competing risk step-stress model with a lag period where each independent risk follows a Weibull lifetime distribution, the interim lag period is linear, and the attainment point is assumed known. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimators and the observed information matrix; we construct confidence intervals and provide estimates of coverage probabilities using large sample theory, percentile bootstrap, and bias-corrected accelerated (BCa) bootstrap methods.     

Social accounting as stakeholder knowledge appropriation

Heeding the call for socio-political explorations of the social accounting project, we use the analytical lens of knowledge appropriation to explore power and contest in social auditing. We develop a knowledge appropriation model comprising three stages: knowledge creation, knowledge generation and outcome distribution, which we then use to analyze an exemplar case. We argue that, despite asymmetries of power and managerial prerogative, deficient stakeholder involvement in the creation and distribution stages renders social auditing ineffective for governance as either a stakeholder account or a strategic management system. We conclude that embedded stakeholder involvement in knowledge creation processes is essential for social auditing to be effective as corporate governance.     

Two-step jackknife bias reduction for logistic regression mles

Maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) for logistic regression coefficients are known to be biased in finite samples and consequently may produce misleading inferences. Bias adjusted estimates can be calculated using the first-order asymptotic bias derived from a Taylor series expansion of the log likelihood. Jackknifing can also be used to obtain bias corrected estimates, but the approach is computationally intensive, requiring an additional series of iterations (steps) for each observation in the dataset.Although the one-step jackknife has been shown to be useful in logistic regression diagnostics and i the estimation of classification error rates, it does not effectively reduce bias. The two-step jackknife, however, can reduce computation in moderate-sized samples, provide estimates of dispersion and classification error, and appears to be effective in bias reduction. Another alternative, a two-step closed-form approximation, is found to be similar to the Taylo series method in certain circumstances. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that all the procedures, but particularly the multi-step jackknife, may tend to over-correct in very small samples. Comparison of the various bias correction proceduresin an example from the medical literature illustrates that bias correction can have a considerable impact on inference     

Effects of a Mid- to Late-Life Parental Divorce on Adult Children

There is a dearth of research on whether and how a later-life parental divorce influences the lives of adult children. Through qualitative interviews with 40 adult children of divorce (ACD)—those whose parents divorced after they were 18 years of age—ACD were asked to discuss their experience of the parental divorce. There were commonalities experienced by the ACD. However, only half of the ACD were initially affected negatively by their parents’ divorce, whereas the other half did not have a tough time initially. Factors including being “put in the middle,” along with strained parent–child relationships, were found to have the potential to affect one’s experience.     

Validation of a Multivariate Career and Educational Counseling Intervention Model Using Long‐Term Follow‐Up

In this study, the author sought to validate the effectiveness of a multivariate career and educational counseling intervention model through long‐term follow‐up of clients seen in private practice. Effectiveness was measured by clients' commitment to and enjoyment of their chosen career paths and the relationship of these factors to adherence to program recommendations. Findings indicated that 65% of clients adhered to program recommendations. Those who adhered to program recommendations were significantly more committed to their careers; however, no significant difference was found in clients' enjoyment of their careers. Additionally, 85% of clients reported that the program met their needs, and 95% would recommend the program.

An endogenous growth model is developed where each period firms invest in researching and developing new ideas. An idea increases a firm's productivity. By how much depends on the technological propinquity between an idea and the firm's line of business. Ideas can be bought and sold on a market for patents. A firm can sell an idea that is not relevant to its business or buy one if it fails to innovate. The developed model is matched up with stylized facts about the market for patents in the United States. The analysis gauges how efficiency in the patent market affects growth.     

Regionalizing Healthcare in Alberta: Legislated Change, Uncertainty and Loose Coupling

In this paper,we examine the re-organizing attempts of the Alberta government in healthcare from the viewpoint of uncertainty,loose coupling and the frequently unrecognized consequences of such change.We suggest that our understanding of change processes can be enhanced by conceptualizing the impact of task and environmental uncertainty through the nature of coupling between organizational elements.Based on our .ndings,we propose that the greater the degree of loose coupling in an organization,the more di .cult change is likely to be,and the more likely the occurrence of unanticipated consequences.

Strategic management is a process that deals with the entrepreneurial work of the organisation, with organisational renewal and growth, and more particularly, with developing and utilising the strategy which is to guide the organisation's operations. Strategic management approaches emphasise the processes of strategic decision-making and adaptation to change. The paper reviews the literature to date and the modern strategic management paradigm and examines strategy formulation from an analytic perspective.
