Active Employment Policies in Europe

In this paper the authors examine the theoretical framework of the set of laws, provisions, regulations, recommendations and pronouncements that embody the active employment policies in Europe. They illustrate that the theoretical framework is influenced in its attribution of meaning and significance to its subject matter by its relationship with the definitions of employment. To do this they provide an analysis of: the collective agencies, the courses of action, the recipient groups, the relations between the collective agencies, the courses of action decided upon and their recipient subjects, the supporting measures by which these courses of action will be implemented.     

The proportional random allocation of indivisible units

Indivisible units are randomly allocated among agents with a claim/demand on the resources. The available resources fall short of the sum of individual claims.  The proportional method distributes units sequentially, and the probability of receiving a unit at any step is proportional to the unsatisfied claims.  We characterize the family of probabilistic rationing methods meeting the three axioms Consistency, Lower and Upper Composition. It contains the proportional method, all deterministic fixed priority methods, and the priority compositions of proportional methods. The proportional method is the only fair method in the family. Latin American Psychology in the Interamerican Journal of Psychology in the 1990's

This paper reviews 119 articles by Latin American psychologists, which have been published between 1990–1998 in the Revista Interamericana de Psicologia/Interamerican Journal of Psychology (RIP, ISP). As the official publication of the Interamerican Society of Psychology, the journal plays a prominent role, especially in Latin American psychology. It is concluded that Latin American psychologists have been active in many research areas and are seeking solutions for many pressing societal problems. While interested in a variety of general theoretical issues, Latin American psychologists have focused above all on applied studies.     

Ordinal models and generalized estimating equations to evaluate disease severity

Many assays have been carried out in Capsicum spp. in order to evaluate its resistance to Phytophthora capsici , which causes blight and considerable yield loss. An assay aiming at the selection of resistant pepper and bell pepper genotypes to P. capsici was jointly performed in the laboratory of the Phytopathological Clinic of Entomology, Phytopathology and Agricultural Zoology and in the experimental area of the Plant Production Department, both located at ESALQ, University of São Paulo, Brazil. The data set for this assay comes from ordinal categorized random variables, whose analysis does not generally take into account the ordinal nature of the responses, but instead, builds indexes, among other measures, in order to evaluate the resistance of the studied genotypes. This work presents ordinal generalized linear fits in order to evaluate blight severity as well as to identify and select new resources to the pathogen. It also analyses the estimating equations proposed by Liang & Zeger (1986a, b) in order to obtain an infection pattern for the disease. From the fit of the cumulative logit models, valuable genotypes are identified for genetic breeding programs.     

Marshall and Gorman's Markov chain model for occupational prestige

This report scrutinizes the Markov chain model for occupational prestige proposed by K. P. Marshall and B. L. Gorman (1975, Social Science Research 4, 41–64). It is shown that the results of their application are highly unstable.
