Inequality measures are often presented in the form of a rank ordering to highlight their relative magnitudes. However, a
rank ordering may produce misleading inference, because the inequality measures themselves are statistical estimators with
different standard errors, and because a rank ordering necessarily implies multiple comparisons across all measures. Within
this setting, if differences between several inequality measures are simultaneously and statistically insignificant, the interpretation of the ranking is changed. This study uses a multivariate subset selection
procedure to make simultaneous distinctions across inequality measures at a pre-specified confidence level. Three applications
of this procedure are explored using country-level data from the Luxembourg Income Study. The findings show that simultaneous
precision plays an important role in relative inequality comparisons and should not be ignored.

This study employed dominance analysis to assess the relative importance of maternal and paternal support, behavioral control, and psychological control in explaining depression, antisocial behavior, and social initiative within 644 adolescents. We noted the lack of replicated findings concerning differential effects of mothers and fathers and employed an approach that considered mothers’ and fathers’ overlapping predictive abilities in determining their relative importance. Results lend support to the overall parental framework and additionally suggest (a) mothers’ behavioral control is relatively more important than fathers’ in explaining sons’ subsequent antisocial behavior, (b) fathers’ support is relatively more important than mothers’ support in explaining subsequent youth social initiative, and (c) mothering and fathering tend to have a cross‐gendered effect on early adolescents’ depression. 相似文献

Logistic regression is a popular method of relating a binary response to one or more potential covariables or risk factors. In 1980, Hosmer and Lemeshow proposed a method for assessing the goodness of fit of logistic regression models. This test is based on a chi-squared statistic that compares the observed and expected cell frequencies in the 2 g table, as found by sorting the observations by predicted probabilities and forming g groups. We have noted that the test may be sensitive to situations where there are low expected cell frequencies. Further, several commonly used statistical packages apply the Hosmer-Lemeshow test, but do so in diff erent ways, and none of the packages we considered alerted the user to the potential difficulty with low expected cell frequencies. An alternative goodness-of-fit test is illustrated which seems to off er an advantage over the popular Hosmer-Lemeshow test, by reducing the likelihood of small expected counts and, potentially, sharpening the interpretation. This study examined early adolescent autonomy and relatedness during disagreements with friends as key social competencies likely to predict academic achievement during the transition to high school and academic attainment into early adulthood. A sample of 184 adolescents was followed through age 29 to assess predictions to academic success from observed autonomy and relatedness during a disagreement task with a close friend. Observed autonomy and relatedness at age 13 predicted relative increases in grade point average (GPA) from 13 to 15, and greater academic attainment by age 29, after accounting for baseline GPA. Findings remained after accounting for peer acceptance, social competence, scholastic competence, externalizing and depressive symptoms, suggesting a key role for autonomy, and relatedness during disagreements in helping adolescents navigate challenges in the transition to high school and beyond. 相似文献
