Tocqueville,Beaumont and the Silences in Histories of the United States: An Interdisciplinary Endeavour across Literature and Sociology

Taking the example of the intermittent presence and absence of narratives of slavery, colonialism, and race within standard accounts of the US, we examine how Tocqueville's sociological account of the emergence of democracy in America is transformed when read together with the novel, Marie, written by his friend and travel companion, Beaumont, which addresses issues of American slavery and racism. Our interdisciplinary project proceeds by considering the possible contributions to historical sociology of analysis of literary narratives, and by exploring the translation of social realities into fiction. These interdisciplinary translations, we argue, highlight the specific issue of silences within mainstream narratives about American democracy and enable us to reassess the significance of silences within historiographies of modernity. In particular, the neglect of Beaumont's contribution has given rise to an appropriation of Tocqueville to a largely celebratory account of American democracy and has elided his concern with the lasting consequences of slavery and racism.     

Generalized polya eggenberger family of distributions and its relation to lagrangian katz family

Janardan (1973) introduced the generalized Polya Eggenberger family of distributions (GPED) as a limiting distribution of the generalized Markov-Polya distribution (GMPD). Janardan and Rao (1982) gave a number of characterizing properties of the generalized Markov-Polya and generalized Polya Eggenberger distributions. Here, the GPED family characterized by four parameters, is formally defined and studied. The probability generating function, its moments, and certain recurrence relations with the moments are provided. The Lagrangian Katz family of distributions (Consul and Famoye (1996)) is shown to be a sub-class of the family of GPED (or GPED ₁ ) as it is called in this paper). A generalized Polya Eggenberger distribution of the second kind (GPED ₂ ) is also introduced and some of it's properties are given. Recurrence relations for the probabilities of GPED ₁ and GPED ₂ are given. A number of other structural and characteristic properties of the GPED ₁ are provided, from which the properties of Lagrangian Katz family follow. The parameters of GMPD ₁ are estimated by the method of moments and the maximum likelihood method. An application is provided.     

Combined sample scores versus two-sample scores under censoring

For testing the equality of K-populations against ordered alternatives a quadratic form based on two-sample scores of (K-l) pairs of adjacent samples has been suggested as an alternative to the statistic proposed by Beslow(1970). The Pitman asymptotic efficiency of the proposed statistic relative to the Breslow's statistic is found to be one or very close to one in all cases considered. The Bahadur asymptotic efficiency has also been studied and found to be at least one for the situations taken up in this paper.     

Bayesian approach to estimation of intraclass correlation using reference prior

For the balanced variance component model when the intraclass correlation coefficient is of interest, Bayesian analysis is often appropriate. Berger and Bernardo’s (1992a) grouped ordering reference prior approach is used to analyze this model. The reference priors are developed and compared for the posterior inference with real and simulated data. We examine whether the reference priors satisfy the probability-matching criterion. Further, the reference prior is shown to be good in the sense of correct frequentist coverage probability of the posterior quantile.     

An exact test for nbue class of survival functions

Let F(x) be a life distribution. An exact test is given for testing H₀ F is exponential, versusH₁Fε NBUE (NWUE); along with a table of critical values for n=5(l)80, and n=80(5)65. An asymptotic test is made available for large values of n, where the standardized normal table can be used for testing.     

(M,S)-optimal row-column designs

Row-column designs may be considered to have two blocking schemes, namely the treatments by rows and treatments by columns component block designs. The (M,S)-optimality criterion is applied to row-column designs, and che connection between the (M,S)-optimal design and its component block designs is demonstrated.     

Conditions for fourth order rotatability in K dimensions

In this paper, conditions for a set of points to form a rotatable design of order four have been worked out. These condi- tions form the basis for obtaining a set of rotatable designs of order four.     

Outcomes Assessment of Role-Play Scenarios for Teaching Responsible Conduct of Research

We describe the summative assessment of role-play scenarios that we previously developed to teach central topics in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) to graduate students in science and engineering. Interviews with role-play participants, with participants in a case discussion training session, and with untrained students suggested that role-playing might promote a deeper appreciation of RCR by shifting the focus away from wanting to simply “know the rules.” We also present the results of a think-aloud case analysis study and describe the development of a behaviorally-anchored rating scale (BARS) to assess participants' case analysis performance.
