Abstract

Hepburn (1975) stated that the definition of the audience determines whether deviance exists so that societal reaction can take place. However, the audience has not received systematic attention in the literature of the sociology of deviance. The existing literature examines mostly the reactions of official social control agents. Consequently, the purpose of this research is to determine the stereotypes held by a group besides social control agents. Further, the research explores whether the sex of the deviant affects the stereotypes associated with deviant behaviors. The data were gathered from a sample of college students attending a small liberal arts college. Twelve types of deviants representing a wide variety of behavior patterns were evaluated using an Osgood semantic differential scale. The data show that the respondents perceived each type of deviant as having a different stereotype and that the stereotypes did not overlap. Furthermore, the stereotypes were not complex ones, nor all negative. The data further indicate that the sex of the deviant was influential in how people responded to that deviant.  相似文献

An active-learning assignment is described that involves developing strategies and identifying appropriate tactics for diverse audiences. The assignment can be used in a class of any size. Students are required to develop a goal, objectives, strategies, an identification of tactics, and evaluation plans for a request for proposals by the city of Chicago regarding an urban food desert. Students are asked to develop a plan to promote fresh, high-nutrient food to either low-income African-American women or low-income Hispanic women living in the food desert.  相似文献

In an article in the Winter 1995 issue of the journal of Social Work Education, Dorothy Van Soest challenged social work professionals to debate competing perspectives on multiculturalism. Van Soest asserted that social work educators have failed to resolve hidden value conflicts about multiculturalism and, consequently, failed to carry out the theme in the social work curriculum. The authors contend that multiculturalism is the wrong construct to debate- that social work educators should be concerned instead with cultural diversity, and that Van Soest’s attack on social work education is unwarranted.  相似文献

The bivariate logarithmic series distribution was introduced by Subrahmaniam (1966) as a Fisher-limit to the bivariate negative binomial distribution. The present paper considers the properties of the distribution along with various models giving rise to it. Problems of estimation and the goodness-of-fit are examined. Vaginal reconstruction is a frequent accompaniment of or sequel to radical surgery for recurrent gynecologic cancers. After reviewing research on vaginal reconstruction, undertaken from a perspective which gives prominence to women's power over decisions concerning the use of their bodies and over the definition of their sexuality, we note that the psychosocial and sexual impact of such surgery for the patient and her partner has often been underestimated, ignored, or misunderstood. We discuss the need for vaginal reconstruction and the definition of its success in terms of researchers' Stereotypic attitudes and assumptions about female sexuality as these are exemplified in their research methodologies. This analysis raises serious concerns about what constitutes informed consent for reconstructive surgery, the medical professionals' biases about female sexuality concerning power over their own bodies, and how best to meet the sexual rehabilitation needs of women with gynecologic cancer.  相似文献

Previous attempts to measure material well-being or hardship have not made clear the relationship of individual items to the broader concept of hardship. The current study used the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), a large-scale U.S. survey with a large number of questions on the material circumstances of households to create a measurement model of hardship that takes this relationship into account. A higher-order model with five-first-order factors: consumer durables, resources available to meet needs, housing conditions, neighborhood problems and crime, and community services, and a single second-order factor hardship fit the data well, with the “Housing” and “Neighborhood” first-order factors most strongly related to the higher-order hardship construct. Despite our attempts to tie the hardship measures to objective conditions, subjective evaluations were strongly related to most of the factors.

Arguments about using computer facilities in classroom teaching have received a lot of attention over time. Using the computer facilities will be helpful to demonstrate real-world applications, while poor data or inappropriate case studies might hinder the applications of the computer programs in classroom teaching. In this paper, we examine the impacts that using computer programs to teach business statistics have on students in the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. The results show that students are attracted to the interactive computer programs designed for the business statistics course, and students are more motivated to attend classes when computer programs are applied in teaching. Furthermore, computer programs help students to understand confusing topics, and students feel that teaching them to use computer facilities really improves their own abilities to apply similar programs in analyzing real-world problems.  相似文献
